I feel like the First game on the New Turf we saw that it played tight and even might have caused some injuries because of Players getting stuck in it. Never noticed anyone slipping on either team during game 1. Fast Forward to this game and it seemed to play very slick/loose with players losing traction and pellets flying often. I wonder if that was because they did a lot of work to the Field during the week and over did it. Added more pellets or ground them up more or something. One thing is for sure I didn't like how it played.

Can anyone confirm any work that the Field crew might have done to the Field during the wekk to change the way the surface played ???

You can vacuum up or add turf turds to change how it plays. My kid played on that stuff, and the length of the blade always made a dif in how it played, which is not changeable, and more turf turds obviously made it softer and slower. It’s about my least favorite surface to be honest. She tore her LCL on it, grass would have been more forgiving.

Hate to hear that about her injury.

There is a middle/high school in central Kentucky that’s baseball and football fields are combined and is turf. The “dirt” part of the baseball field is actually brown colored turf. My son said it is extremely difficult to slide into a base with that stuff.

On the barion brown side line out where he caught it and tried about 4 different moves to get free when he caught the ball he slid something crazy.
That's the only time I noticed, but his moves / footwork were kind of crazy so I didn't think much of it.

Yep, we noticed it was way more slick and a problem in game 1 than 2, just the opposite of what the OP noticed. We had been wondering if they would do anything to it the past week to make it safer and felt they had. Funny how people see the same thing differently.

All depends on the position you play and how the play happens.

Cutting side to side on the rolling rubber turds is a bich, and if you start to slide, you can really get hurt when your shoes suddenly grab again. They had that turf at the old practice facility and played on it sparingly sometimes towards the end of Brooks' era because of the recurring high ankle sprains. Great for straight line speed, but tough on knees and ankles going side to side, no give when you get rolled up on.

I'm hoping that this week they can find a Happy Median on preparing the Field. Seems like roll back just a lil less of what they did for week two and the Field should be optimized for everyone Hopefully.

I shudder to think about playing on this new stuff on a rainy day. Or maybe we need to hope for that when Knoxville & Bama comes to town.

That's the exact thing going on here, as you said sliding is not easy. Nine high schools in 3 counties here and 7 have turf football fields, 3 converted over the summer.

I thought there was plenty of sliding last week as well.
I just think that there were two injuries where feet got planted because of football.

I am worried about the turf. Enough ways to get injured without the turf adding to it.
What's the last 5 years or so data that says turf injuries are more frequent & worse than grass? I know that used to be true. But I'd think if the data today showed they were worse that turf would have been banned due to legal risks plus players not signing with schools/teams that have turf.

Seems places should be able to use grass considering it don't get cold enough to lose ur field grass in most of the SEC til end of November or longer. Most seasons are over before the field is trashed, turf if used because its a good look for the cameras and TV audience but the players are losing the battle with it for sure.

It’s horrible for the TV audience. From Noon until six the turf looks terrible on TV if it’s a sunny day.

Rodgers tore his tendon on a new turf field. It’s the newness that seems to be slick. A lot of NFL players are complaining about it.

The Bluegrass State………. I’d say should have bluegrass.

Grow it and spud out places for repairs where it’s needed. Drain it right, maintain it right , think ahead to keep it in top shape.

Also open up, promote and create better tailgate scene, or something integrated with the arboretum that competes with any tailgate scene. Even a section of it. It’s what differentiates our stadium from others so we should definitely use it.

Less goofy shit , like blocking Alumni Dr. and saying the red lots full when it’s not.

Less walking back to the ride for a case knife carried through 3 wars from kin folk some goofy“ power drunk” nerd , or granny, or a socially awkward within 3 years of senior prom kid wants you to toss!🖕@

IF Commonwealth would go back to grass, that would take it out of hosting State Finals.
Can’t play football on grass surfaces two days in a row if you get any weather.
Also it’s tough to hold other things (concerts, competitions etc) on grass.

So in the end it’s all about $ as stated.

These billion dollar NFL stadiums can actually be used more than 8-10 times per year with the artificial turf. Makes it a much easier sell for cities footing the bill.

Stoops wanted The Krog to have artificial surface when he 1st started this job 10 yrs ago. Why, so he could use it to practice on in the Spring, and it wouldn't get worn out using for practice in the fall.

Not all about $$

Same problem it has always been. The people who control the purse don't GAF about the players .....they only care about the money....
The players have power. They can unite against this or take the money they're getting. Is Rogers getting his contract?

Heard today that there are 16% more lower body injuries to NFL players on turf than grass.

Don't know if this system is used anywhere in NFL or would work for football:

"FC Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium is the first venue in Major League Soccer to leverage the combination of The Motz Group’s game-changing turfgrass technology of AirPAT and Eclipse. Motz installed their proprietary AirPAT system at TQL Stadium, which is a moisture rootzone management solution that wraps the entire field with a watertight liner and uses a unique vacuum/ventilation system to create a perfect growing climate for the grass plants. The surface also features Eclipse, a championship-quality hybrid system of natural ryegrass and synthetic turf elements. Used at professional soccer and rugby venues around the world, Eclipse delivers outstanding surface stability and enhanced wear tolerance for year-round playability. A total of 84,600 square feet of Eclipse sod was installed, taking a 10-person crew four days to install and groom the field. From start to finish, the entire construction project took 14 weeks."

Couple of companies near me make turf, and I know several guys who travel around the country installing. I don't know much about either other that the turf is made from recycled plastic bottles. I know there are different weights, different links and different textures. I would think UK has the high end turf. It's suppose to be more economical but the injuries are concerning.
