Anthony Davis 6-9 and change without shoes

Lebron taller without shoes than his listed height. That’s a bit of a surprise. I think everyone has always known Durant was taller than 6’9”. I thought he was closer to 6’11” though.

But with shoes. They are basically those height?

More importantly, we find that Kevin Durant is pretty much 6'10" and not 6'9" or 7'0" as some have speculated. Anyway, wingspan is more important.

my point is they’re both taller without shoes than their listed height. For almost every other player it’s the opposite (see AD and Thompson here)

Yup. How many times have I seen people make the comment that Durant actually wanted to be listed shorter than he actually was.

He is. Not by as much as some thought, but he’s listed at 6’9” and is slightly taller than that without shoes on.

Yeah, that's the thing about this- height is important only as it relates to every other player. So if Durant was being listed at 6'9", actually slightly lower than his height without shoes, but almost everyone else was listed at an inch or 2 taller than their height without shoes, then Durant was really closer to 6'11". At least until now, assuming the NBA actually forces real, without shoes measurements to be the official listings.

Never understood why they cared about height without shoes. They don't play barefoot.

Because it's the only way to get a truly reliable gauge on how these guys heights compare to each other.

There's a surprising amount of variance in how much height shoes add. Not sure why, unless they're wearing very different types of shoes, or some players are using shoes to cheat, but how much shoes add differs significantly from player to player.

But if you take the shoes off and make em stand flat footed, you get a far more reliable and consistent measure of true height.

Speaking to Bob Fitzgerald on KNBR, Durant put fact over fiction when answering the age-old question of how tall he really is. “Since I love you guys so much, I was recorded at 6’10” and three-quarters with no shoes, so with my shoes on I’m 7-feet,” Durant finally revealed.

Davis was listed at 6'9.25 at the draft combine. As a late bloomer, you'd think he'd still be growing at 18, so I'm skeptical that he's only 1/2 inch taller now. So many games played with height, I'm skeptical of most claims.

Like someone said, no one plays barefoot, so the without shoes measure is not really interesting to me. So, John Wall was 6'2.75 at his combine, 6'4 with shoes. Has anyone ever seen any listing of Wall at other than 6'4?

FWIW, I'm glad the NBA's finally doing this. There's been so much false listing (and flat out lying) in the past that you never really could trust the height you saw listed. Now maybe we can.

I just wish it had done so decades earlier. If it had, these are some of the things I think we would've discovered:

--Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley were really closer to 6'4" than their listed 6'6".

--Bill Walton was really closer to 7'1" than his listed 6'11".

--Hakeem Olajuwon was more like 6'10" than his listed 7'0".

--Magic Johnson was at least an inch or two under his listed 6'9."

--Allen Iverson was at least an inch or two under his listed 6'0".

It's just to remove the variable when comparing players. I'd love to see standing reach measurements without shoes, be interesting to see on guys like Davis relative to players of similar height.

With Walton and Olajuwon, you're almost certainly right. Walton did not want to be listed as a 7 footer, and I don't think he even allowed himself to be measured after his Freshman year at UCLA. Olajuwon was noticeably shorter than most other guys listed at 7'0"

But the others were probably about the same as anyone else listed at their heights during their playing days. Meaning not without shoes, but not wildly off, either. People always want to make Barkley out as having a severely exaggerated height, but I think that's just because he's built way thicker than the average player. You see pictures of him in uniform and he doesn't look any shorter than a lot of other guys listed at 6'6".

Yeah, I think Walton was the first guy who made me realize how bogus NBA height listings could be. When you saw him standing next to a center who was listed at 7'0", like Hakeem, you could CLEARLY see that Walton was the taller one, there was no question about it.

Yet the official listings told us that Hakeem was taller than Walton. What a joke.

Correct. EVERYONE has always listed their height with shoes. Not sure why it’s suddenly a shock to people when they are shorter without shoes. I thought this was an understood practice by everybody.

who is shocked?

I think people were talking with shoes. Mostly.

They were. With shoes, KD is easily 6'11.

More importantly, looks like LBJ did the same thing Durant did and tried to sell himself as shorter. 99% of players list their heights in shoes which usually gives you anywhere from 1 to 2 inches in height. Meaning, if LBJ couldve gotten away with damn near 6'10? 6'8.5 barefoot is really freaking tall.

Which highlights how insane he is...he's legit PG at 6'10+ and build like NFL running back.

I bet the shoe companies have the NBA to do that so they can get people to buy shoes that will make them seem 1-2 inches taller.:joy:

What do we know?

Everyone is taller with shoes than without.
And every basketball player wears shoes.

So he's almost the same height as LeBron now. LeBron was 6'8" with shoes but measured 6'8.5" without shoes now. Crazy
