Andrija Jelavic commits to UK!

If he’s hanging around after 2 then he’s a bust. Is dioubate the odds on favorite to start at the 4 until JQ is healthy? I think JQ will be our 4 with garrison starting center. We don’t have a true stretch 4. Probably adjusting to a stronger defense. Would be nice to have one more big body with a big roster. A project who is happy to get minutes taking fouls. Man that’s a powerful front court

Garrison/moreno
JQ/dioubate/AJ
In his interview the other day, JQ said Pope told him he would be playing a very similar role to Williams, so I assume he is playing the 5 and playing in the high post and we will initiate the offense through him. That puts Garrison off the ball in a Carr type role, when they play together.

I think the biggest question for the frontcourt is who ends up being the fourth guy?

I’m fairly confident that JQ, BG, and MD- all of which have played at this level- will get most of the minutes unless Moreno and/or Jelavic prove they should play over one of those guys,

So who gets the rest of the minutes between the Freshmen?

I think Jelavic is the best fit with the older guys. MM plays more like JQ and BG. AJ brings better ball handling and shooting than MM and would probably help with spacing more when he is out there.

I think by the end of the year, Moreno will be out of the lineup (barring injuries) and Pope plays the other four in a tight four man rotation.

Something like this:

PF Dioubate(22)/Jelavic(14)/Garrison(4)
C Quaintance(22)/Garrison(18)

So the experienced guys all get 20+ minutes.

Now I am not saying Dioubate starts, I just think he gets the most minutes at the 4 because Garrison will be needed at the 5 more than the 4 spot. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pope starts JQ and BG together, even though they won’t be on the floor much together in that scenario.

That doesn’t seem how they roster is developing. I can’t see garrison/JQ/ moreno dividing minutes at the 5 and garrison at the 4? I think it’s a mystery what he’s going to do with JQ. Garrison at the 4 is pointless. He doesn’t have guard skills he’s a post player who’s gonna get 25-30 min a game in order for this team to be a top 20 defensive team. And pope selling him. Look none of us know what pope sold him on. Pope says he makes no promises. We have an attacking pg now that can drive and shoot (hopefully). The value of a passing big while still high well it doesn’t have to come from the post. No one will guard garrison on the perimeter it’s basically playing two bigs like cal with kat and wcs. JQ on the other hand is much more versatile from the perimeter. This team looks less 3 point oriented and a little more old school based on the composition. I think we have to Wait until we are finished recruiting to have a realistic idea. Right now we will have

Lowe
?
Oweh
JQ
Garrison

Lowe is probably a better shooter than his stats show but still he was like 26%. Where are the 3s coming from if we play something like this? Or even flip garrison and JQ? Like I say a more traditional team with physicality at the expense of shooting so there are still many possibilities. I mean we still haven’t heard about Oweh.

One other curveball. When will AJ be cleared to play?

Where did you get this info? When did Pope say that Alvaro wasn't athletic enough for the SEC? We just making stuff up at this point? LMAO
Wouldn't surprise me if that was the sentiment from the staff, though. Alvaro can jump about as well as me from the looks of it.

Just going by what JQ said in the interview about how Pope plans to utilize him.

Notice on my minutes breakdown I only have BG playing a few minutes at PF.

I would not be surprised if JQ doesn't play until December. That changes the minutes calculus a bit and gives MD, Garrison, Moreno, and Jelavic more minutes the first part of the season. JQ comes available and they start working him into the rotation. Pretty excited to see how effective the D will be when Oweh, MD, and JQ are on the floor at the same time.

Really don't get the talk of Garrison playing the four. The four has more mobility, shooting ability and ball handling than what Garrison has. With more minutes this season I am hopeful that Garrison is able to score more inside, rebound and block shots much better than last season. All we need from him.

Hopefully Garrison works with someone that can teach him how to play like Andrew Carr. With his size, he could be a hell of a weapon with a back-to-the-basket game and a higher outside shooting %.

Some would point to Carr dipping to 32% this year but IMO that was his back injury, its hard to shoot when your back hurts.
I actually think some was being ask to shoot them early in the shot clock. I remember an interview where he mentioned that was a mental adjustment he was working on, and it seemed like he always missed those, but was pretty good later in the shot clock. I think most guys shoot better such as Butler when they have more freedom to let it fly, but some guys overthink it in certain situations which is what happened with Carr early in the shot clock.

What level would the league he's coming out of rank?
One thing they said he has several years playing around pro players over there and 'that should help him a lot' in being able to compete at the collegiate level. Some positives have read about are that he has a 7-2 wingspan, a good instinctive rebounder, athletic, versatile, moves well for his size, position awareness, can switch and defend different positions on defense and scores well off the ball.

He says that he needs to work on his strength and continue getting better as a shooter. Area's of needed improvements that people that have evaluated him are defense, strength, shooting efficiency and having no lapses. But, they have said he should be an early contributor because of his wingspan, his positional awareness, already playing with older and talented players in Europe, scoring versatility and mobility.

Screw Cal's platoon system. We might have the makings of Pitino's hellacious pressure.

Pope could possibly press for 40 minutes and get scores up in the high 90s next season if we add Wilkerson to the roster. Williams, Chandler, JQ, Mo D, and Lowe are all high-level defenders who would fit a press perfectly.

You know Pope goes to bed tonight dreaming of that scenario. Instead of sugar plum fairies dancing in his head, he has flashbacks of Mercer, Delk, Anderson, Sheppard, Turner, and Walker putting on the full-court press!

You do know the press for 40 minutes is no longer in Vogue right ? Been 25-30 years since a team used this strategy. It is ok to press to mix up tempo against a team, but to try that for the whole game, the defense would get exposed big time. Not to mention dead legs for the offensive side. Maybe when we get a big lead, we can employ the 4 Corners and run the clock out. Oh wait, that is no longer used either.

Does anyone have an opinion on if he’s a better prospect than some of the other Euro bigs coming to college next year?

Sananda Fru - Germany - UL
Andreas Holdt - Denmark - Oklahoma
Hannes Steinbach - Germany - Washington
Samis Calderon - Brazil - Kansas
Dwayne Aristode - Netherlands - Arizona

Some of these are in the 2025 class rankings and some aren’t.

Just poking a little fun here. Last time I checked a map, Brazil was in South America🤣

I think I at least for now see him as a talented developmental guy that will play but maybe less than some may hope or expect, like 15 minutes or so.

Very much subject to change but it seems like typically the skill advantages of the euros don't do more than pop here and there until they adjust to the physicality some.

Haha I don't care one way or the other. You were the one saying what Pope said and had proof.
Seems like you care . You are the only one arguing the point. Multiple people including a moderator verified what I said. I’m not going to link something from the premium board. If you can’t understand that you’re stupid. I already have my suspicions about that, lol .

Yep, the full court press became less effective when big guys started learning how to dribble; even Pitino doesn't do it all game now.

Well technically I didn’t call you stupid . I said if you didn’t understand why I couldn’t post things from the premium board you were stupid. You decide . LOL

FWIW, Greg calls him the Croatian Grant Nelson (I'd take it!):

Said to dribble like a guard and beat people off the dribble, posts up well inside, quick for a big man, blocks shots because of his size and quickness, rebounds well, passes well with his size over people, good at defending passing lanes, finishes well inside and his quickness allows him to switch and guard whoever on defense.

While that sounds great, I would be cautious using anyone from Sleepers Media as a talent evaluator. I enjoy some of their content. But, I have found them to be lacking in true analytical analysis. Keep in mind, very few people really knew the guy before he committed. Everyone is watching his “Highlight” videos. He looks good in those. Let’s hope he is the best version of those highlights.

I like Sleepers and Southeastern 16, they are both really good, but they know how to butter the bread and UK fans are the knife that does it, so there is a bit of pandering going on with both channels.

Why are you so goonishly patronizing?

It was never "in vogue." In fact, only a few teams even used it even back then. Guess why? Elite depth is pretty rare, but we'll probably have some next year.

And there's no harm in hoping that we could see some press; and guess what? They had good point guards who could "expose" the press big time back then, too. Remember Arizona with Terry and Bibby and Simon? Remember Jalen Rose, and McGinnis, and Tony Miller? They handled our press pretty well, too.

But go on with your condescending baboonish response and enlighten us all.
