Tonight I kind of fixated on Spurrier's more infuriating qualities that I don't think were such a great example. But the more I followed that line of thinking, the more I started to see something very valuable in Spurrier, beyond wins and losses. He reveals to us something about ourselves and our phony, conformist expectations for what coaches and public figures are "supposed" to say and how they're "supposed" to act.
I'm not saying I now like how he did things often. But I am saying that having someone that stands out like that, who forces us to challenge our assumptions and who breaks the boring status quo, is an essential thing.
He's a dying breed in that respect.
