American sniper!

Saw it tonight. Horrible acting, but I sort of expected it. The violence against the children was just difficult to watch. That guy in real life must of been really messed up mentally. One thing to shoot and kill people in battle, another thing to pick people off as a sniper. I wouldn't want the job, the post traumatic stress would be some serious crap to deal with.

There has been a lot of controversy over stories he said and even had in his books. Some of them were proven to be lies and never happened. I do not think he made these things up just for notoriety. I believe he actually believed these things due to all of the mental problems he was having.

They said Kentucky up by 5 Patrick Sparks with 7 points . They were playing South Carolina . A lot of attention to detail to have such a random game in the correct year playing in the background .

I'm not sure he had a lot of mental problems. He certainly didn't feel guilt for his role as a sniper. In his book, he says the toughest thing, mentally, was being in full tilt combat mode one day, then having to turn off the switch and come back to civilian life the next day when his deployment ended. He had some survivor's guilt when his buddy died in combat, but I think he was more or less a bit of a boastful kind of Type A personality who embellished some stories.

He originally had a story about punching Jesse Ventura in a bar that didn't happen, and Ventura sued him successfully (so that story was removed from the book), and Ventura is now suing his estate for further damages.

All in all, his combat kills were confirmed (the unconfirmed count is an additional 200+ I think). The guy was a machine in combat. Not only was he a sniper, but as a trained Navy Seal, he volunteered to be point man on a lot of house-to-house type of raids to gather insurgents, weapons, etc. He had a lot of up-close and personal experience, too.

Interesting guy. His murder was tragic.

Had considerable PTSD. Almost wrecked his marriage and family.

All his military exploits have been checked and confirmed by the Navy.

We won't go into the other stories of his life......it tends to seriously derail threads....

All of these award nominations for the movie and the actors must be a shock then. Not sure if you understand what a sniper is or how the military works.

I remember that he wrote that the biggest issues with his marriage were really that he wasn't committed to it for along time, and they sort of great apart because he kept re-enlisting. he was more interested in being a SEAL than a father/husband. I'll have to re-read the book, though. It's been a little while.

I don't know if a lot of the PTSD is in the book. But when he came back, often times he would stay away drinking.....then come home drunk. The PTSD took it's toll. He sought help and eventually started a foundation aimed at helping those with PTSD. Sadly, it was while trying to help a vet with PTSD that he was killed.

I don't think that's true, per say. He was certainly never diagnosed with PTSD, or if so, that was never made public, nor has he or his wife ever claimed he "Got help." He said in his book (and she later said in interviews) that he totaled his truck one night and realized he needed to stop drinking to excess, but regardless, his heavy drinking/brawling lifestyle certainly predated going to war.

He wrote in his book that his biggest problem with his wife/family was that he resented that she gave him an ultimatum to choose re-enlisting or her, and it took him a while to accept that, because he had always identified more as being a SEAL than a husband/father.

Not having seen the movie, I know the movie takes some liberties with the story, as can be expected. But it seems like the diagnosis of "PTSD" is an assumption or leap that's being made, rather than a fact.

I find it fascinating they can go back and align timeframes, find a game that very well could have been playing on TV that day, obtain the video, and work it into the scene....

...and then use a fake baby in a scene where the baby is featured.

A FAKE BABY. A FAKE BABY PEOPLE

Just saw it this afternoon. Very powerful movie. Will have to read the book now.

I thought the acting was pretty good.

The scene where the kid picked up the rocket launcher captured the job of a sniper to me. No way anybody wants to shoot that kid but he knows if kid gets ready to fire you have to do it. Damn, be hard to do.

Saw it this past Monday, really enjoyed it. Can't imagine going through a war like that, not knowing who might be trying to kill you. I'm sure 99% of the civilians over there wouldn't piss on an American if he was on fire.

I'm assuming the acting was fine since another poster said they had been nominated for awards.

I'm sure you've had very little interaction with returning soldiers but congrats on playing the islamaphobia card like a good zombie.

Heads up to you and the others o hurt by a semi positive movie about a 4 tour navy seal, Amazon is streaming for free their series Transparent this Sunday. Unsurprisingly it won several Golden Globes, and is about a cross dressing grandpa. Go get your faith in Hollywood restored.

work with them every single day. special ops guys too.

So either you are full of shit or you don't listen to them. Based on your constant stereotyping of people in KY and the South my guess is the latter. You seem like the typical liberal that decides what they want to believe and shut out anything contrary to that opinion.

Come back and give us a break down of Transparent, though.

What do you expect? Seriously, you are talking to someone (by their screen name anyway) is from Boston or nearby. He probably has a mosque on his block...

is that bad?

I don't know how many of you know what it takes to be a sniper but, dedication to a job is an understatement. The training many times is worse than the actual job. It is unbelievable what it takes to become one. I for one applaud him on his commitment to the military. I know that some will whine about family and how that must come first. Sorry folks but, if we did not have people like this in the military we would not have a very effective force. My first wife left me because she said she was tired of the military and my commitment to it. It takes a special person who understands the need and reason for this type of commitment and is willing to stand by their spouse and wait until that time is up. Yeah, I know I got off track here but, I thought some should know.

No, I had that view before I watched the movie. Learn watching the news.

As racist as the city of Boston is it might be

Hated the language but it was expected. The ending was gripping as no one in the audience made a sound out of respect of the funeral, touching.
