Am I correct- we’ve changed our punters’ style?

We recruited an Australian rugby style punter Wilson Berry similar to Max Duffy and now have we asked him to punt traditionally? Plenty of very effective rugby style punters in college.

I get the pros don’t want them but why change his natural punting style or don’t we have a traditional punter.

Didn’t matter last night but certainly did in the prior game.

Just wonder if I missed the explanation?

Is Berry the best punter we have or is this just Stoops playing favorites again? Berry is terrible.

Matt Jones talked about this on the post game show a couple weeks ago. Boulware did indeed say there would be no more of the rugby style kicking with him coaching the special teams. It's a stupid decision to make a rugby punter a traditional style punter but on par for this staff.

Jmo but it's not just some line in the sand statement. If you ever listened to max Duffy talk about his experience trying to get in the NFL, you know they don't take rugby punters at all because of the different rules.

Just a guess, but most all these guys want to be in the NFL. So we're starting to prepare them earlier.

I say take the best and let them kick however he's best in college. Iirc berry lost his job to goodfellow two years ago, so he never really took off either way

If that’s true then he’s a fool. If it was all that they should’ve brought a traditional punter in from the portal

Heard last week that the new guy the HC hired for ST said there would be no soccer style putting. Stupid if true. Sounds like a good question to be asked of the coach.
If that's true than someone needs to punch that coach in the balls. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life and I work with inmates so I hear some really stupid shish.

Was he? He lost his job to goodfellow
he lost his job to goodfellow because he had some type of injury, (i think his back or something) that handed Goodfellow the job, and he performed well enough at it to maintain it. Goodfellow was a darn good punter.

Well, what Berry is doing now will not cut it for the NFL - seems like he kicks no longer than 35 yards especially during critical field position situations.

Goodfellow was great for sure. Berry never performed any better then than he does now. 35 yards is about it for him

I agree but he was about the same distance before too. He's just subpar especially compared to the rest of the league and our punting lineage. It's frustrating for sure but his style isnt the issue

Weather was terrible for our game with MO. Both punters were equally affected. Punting in wet, drizzly conditions is far from optimal.

Not true. Check out the SEC stats. Wilson Berry is averaging 40 yards per punt. If you take out his punts during the wet, drizzly game against MO (when MO's P also punted poorly because of weather), Berry is averaging well over 40 yards. He generally gets good hang time, a big UK's punt coverage team has been effective. I am not claiming Berry is one of the all time greats, although his big brother punts in the NFL. But he is a better punter than you said.

Ok he's 5 yards better which still puts him 10 yards behind others in the conference. The bigger issue is his poor punts in crunch time ala Mizzou where we're trying to stop the bleeding and we can't punt it beyond our own 40.

He's subpar and we're majorly losing the hidden yards field position battle mainly because of him. Sadly we don't have anyone better

You really need to fact check before catharsing. Wilson Berry is not "10 yards behind others in the conference", nor is he even the worst SEC punter. We have had better punters, for sure. But you are making Berry out as some kind of bum, which he isn't.

MO's punter also had a bad game. You try punting in wet, drizzly weather. If you just want to be critical, then find something factual to criticize. Believe me, there are a number of legitimate things to criticize factually about this team.

Yeah. You let berry punt how he is use to and most effective. And if you want to be pro style going forward then recruit to it and that’s fine. I also understand if Berry wanted to make the switch to give him the best chance of going pro…since that’s why Max didn’t make the league

Whatever happened to Jackson Smith?

If you think his performance the last several weeks, in whatever weather, is up to par then w we will just have to disagree.
