This opting out is getting worse by the moment.

I’ve never funded an NIL deal, nor have I drafted one, professionally, but “investors” need to protect the school they are spending on, in writing, and make a large, final payment, maybe 50 percent of any annual-type-deal, payable on January 20th following the season.

This should be easily cured.

Yep, 2022 was a big middle finger to UK fans who invested in the Nashville trip only to see Levis and Rodriguez take the NIL and then not play. Oh, and they got to experience a wonderful 21-0 game. As I’ve said in another thread, the fans are screwed by the hands of nil/tp.

When the fans are getting screwed, and have no literal say in the direct matter, then they have only one recourse. Unfortunately, that means putting the dollars someplace else.

I think once this new set of guidelines starts and the schools can actually offer nil deals themselves to some players along with the profit sharing that we may see schools tying things up better with performance requirements.

If bowls want the players, they need to pay the players. Gift packages are not going to cut it when the portal or the NFL is available. Bowls are in trouble. And, why would a team backload an agreement? Teams want players for the regular season. Bowls are the icing. If I am negotiating with two teams and one tries to backload my pay, I go with the one who will give me the “signing bonus” and a good per game pay.

I’ve never heard a Coach, AD or fan base diss a bowl or play off game.

Coaches have accepted a senior players’ decision not to play, because the Coach literally has no control over the decision.

Local businesses paid Levis pretty good $$ to play, and I suspect they would have enjoyed seeing him in Nashville for the Bowl.

You don’t diss bowl games as a coach or fan, because you like the practice your returning team gets as preparation. ADs like the bowl revenue and exposure. As well as the confirmation of their hire.

But, whether the bowl has any real value for a player or fan depends on the status of the bowl and/or the matchup.

There are too many bowls, especially since the playoff has expanded to 12 teams. The minor bowls, for the power conference teams, just don’t mean much.

I’ll agree to that.

Had we pulled a 6-6, or a 5-7 record (and had to fill in for some team opting out), I would have seriously questioned my desire to visit Shreveport or Birmingham.

When the Play Offs expand to 16, that will likely absorb the Citrus and perhaps either the Reliaquest or TS/Gator. Take Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville out of the Bowl picture, and the thought of bowling becomes tenuous from my perspective.

You ever notice, the lower the bowl, the crappier the town? I mean Shreveport,Birmingham and Memphis are absolute dumps

KSR reported that UK is starting to structure their NIL deals this way. It always astounds me to see how amateurs structure contracts. My mantra is incentives drive behavior. Balloon payments/bowl bonuses are the easiest retention incentives.
