Analyst states that Alexander is expected to earn his 5th Star and that Vanderbilt could possibly move into the top 10. What are your thoughts? I personally agree with Cal's statement in his 30 for 30 special that rankings don't mean sheet and it's what you do on the court each and every day that counts. With that said, I do think Shai deserves to be a 5* player in comparison to others in this class and that Vanderbilt has definitely increased his stock with his recent on the court performances. Next year's going to be fun ladies and gentlemen and there's still more to come!

Bamba makes this team maybe scary good, but they will be so young we may never see what they can be.

SKJ and Gabriel could have a hard time getting minutes, not sure they can outplay anybody.
They have to find an edge to their game or you are right. Guys like PJ look at every rebound as theirs.

I think you contradicted yourself by saying you agree with Calipari that rankings don't matter, by 1) this thread title and 2) making an argument as to why both non-four star players by earlier rankings, deserve to be 5 stars. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Saw a comment on Duke's board, saying they liked Vanderbilt's shot selection. That he only shoots when he has the ball.

What a joke. He is a very willing passer, and it's really rich coming from fans of a team that had Tatum and Rivers.

I've already seen Vanderbilt pass it more on the All-American circuit than I seen Tatum pass in his full season at Duke.

Vanderbilt is a point forward. Outstanding passer and should thrive under Cal with a lot of guys that can pass it around. If this isn't an outstanding passing team something is wrong.

Vanderbilt is a top 5 talent, and if he can show any consistency at the shooting is a top 3 talent.

He is sensational talent. Only concern is injury.

Who are you putting him ahead of in the current rsci top 5?

1. Ayton
2. Porter
3. Bamba
4. Carter
5. Duval

What is interesting is that he fell in rankings last year because he was injured and didn't play or played sparingly in the summer circuit. I just don't understand why that is a good reason to drop someone in the rankings. Did his talent just suddenly disappear?

I would go Porter, Bamba, Vando, Carter/Ayton <--- if Vando can make shots. If not, he would be bottom of that list.

But i haven't really watched all these guys. What Vando does have is pretty rare. I can't seem to understand how a 6'9" with multi-dimensional game is barely a top 10.

I haven't seen Duval play myself and every time I have watched Ayton it has been on one of his "off games". Vanderbilt has all the right tools to be in that group.

Seen nothing from Duval to indicate he deserves that rating. Yes, he's got a good physique, and yes, he's an excellent athlete, but I don't see him as the equal of ANY of the top PG's from the 16 class. Probably closest to Dennis Smith, but I don't see the same type of explosiveness.

I take Vanderbilt over any non-big other than Porter. Overall ranking depends on how much weight you want to put on the big guys, since the class is loaded with them, but we'll see how many of those bigs put out the production to match the potential.

Shai was the one who grew like 4 inches in the last year. It was only a matter of time before his game followed..

Thanks for this. Vanderbilt has been very impressive against top competition. However, the most impressive to me, perhaps because he's has been so unheralded as compared to other UK recruits is Alexander. I saw him practice and play in the Derby Classic. He was far superior to the other participants. I know the competition wasn't the equal to McDonalds, Nike or Jordan but this young man really impressed with shooting the 3, driving to the basket, passing, rebounding and floor leadership. He should be a 5 star.

I agree with Cal. But using his own words, what these kids do every single day is usually what produces a higher ranking. Players that live, breathe, eat, and sleep basketball (with good genetics and/or natural talent) are the players ranked the highest. Which is why, for the majority of the top ranked guys, Cal goes after them.

Have seen Shai play on TV a couple of time and I thought he looked like a great player. I think he will surprise a lot of people.

I think both of them do deserve to move up. Rankings don't mean much most of the time, especially after they've already signed. But if the goal in these rankings is accuracy, they should move up. There are a few who might need to move down as well.

As far as UK is concerned, it would just make our class that much more highly regarded. As UK fans, we should be proud to know that our coaches know recruiting well enough to be able to spot guys who have skill and/or potential despite their lower rankings.

And we all know this- some of these guys don't get as much attention as others because they're from smaller schools or towns. Also, some guys develop late or have a growth spurt late, and the rankings don't reflect that. We've seen that multiple times.

Bottom line, based on what we've seen, both of these guys deserve a bump. Shai should definitely be a 5-star, in my opinion, and Vanderbilt is definitely in the top 10 of the players I've seen on this all star circuit.

Don't know if all the recruits will be ready to play ala SKJ and Wenyen to an extent. I'm sure you though both would be better at his time last season as well. Pretty sure you and others though they would take all of Marcus Lee minutes if he stayed, when in reality Lee would have started

The point of my post was that we thought Gabriel and SKJ would be more ready to play than they turned out to be but they were not,we know now that they will need to improve if the team is going to be as good as we hope.

SKJ wasn't able to see the floor in the last half of the season,Gabriel only saw limited minutes in crunch time in the late season.Vanderbilt,Washington, Diallo and Richards are going to compete for time,if Bamba and /or Johnson show up the competition will get tougher.Based on what we have seen so far it is reasonable to question if Gabriel and SKJ are up for the task

I have watched Vanderbilt play a total of 5 games now. I absolutely love his versatility. In my opinion, only Porter is better. Alton has the most overall potential with his versatility and talent, but he does not seem to have the motor or a basketball mind. Bamba is a game changer, but very one dimensional, as is Carter. Duvall is not top 10 IMO. There is only one player in the class I like better, that's Porter
