2010 vs. West Virginia, UK was favored by 4 points
2011 vs. UConn, UK was favored by 2 points
2014 vs. UConn, UK was favored by 2.5 points
2015 vs. Wisconsin, UK was favored by 5 points
2016 vs. Indiana, UK was favored by 3 points
2017 vs. UNC, UNC was favored by 2.5 points
2018 vs. Kansas State, UK was favored by 6 points
2019 vs. Auburn, UK was favored by 2.5 points
2022 vs. St. Peter's, UK was favored by 18 points

So there you have it. UK has nine NCAA tournament losses under John Calipari, and in eight of those, Vegas declared we were the favorite.

8/9 losses we've been bested by an underdog.

9 wins one year
Losing to a 15 seed the next. The two worst back to back seasons in our history.
players first
Had a disproportionate amount of our all time talent and only one title
Doesn’t seem to care for tournaments

I could make a mile long list to get cal out

How does this compare to tubby and pitino?

I'd assume tubby was favorite when we lost to Marquette, uab, usc, and michigan state and maybe Syracuse in 2000. I'm assuming underdog to msu in 99, Maryland 2002, uconn 2006 and Kansas 2007. So 44% as underdog and 56% as favorite.

Pitino I'm assuming dog to Duke 92 but favorites in other 4 losses to Michigan, Marquette, North Carolina and Arizona. So 80% as favorite and 20% as dog.

I thought about that and it's a good question.

It's also important to take a look at the level of NBA talent those guys were losing to. In Pitino's case, losing to guys like Stackhouse, Webber, Rose, Howard, Wallace, Bibby, Terry, Dickerson, etc. Also, not having Derek Anderson was obviously substantial for that 1997 team and should be factored into any real discussion.

Pitino's biggest dud was against Marquette. That was a massive embarrassment. He followed it up with three straight #1 seeds, two national title game appearances, and a title.

Plenty to criticize him over but this ain’t it IMO. Of that list, only WVU, Kansas State, and St. Peter’s were big upsets, with St. Peter’s being the only historically significant upset. No one is going to be unbeaten in every 2-3 point game, that’s just blatantly unrealistic.

Curious what the other side of this looks like as far as his record as an underdog in tourney.

Guessing 2011 Ohio State, 2011 UNC, 2014 Wichita State, 2014 Louisville, possibly 2014 Michigan and Wisconsin? 2017 UCLA had to be a pick ‘em or close.

That's terrible! Wonder if Bill Self has stats similar to that?

That's fair but if you are gonna bring up Anderson I think it only fair we bring up wcs and pouthress for 2014 and 2015. Wcs would have helped down low against uconns driving guards and everyone know how 2015 look pre poy and post poy.

We can also point out brown in 1993 as we probably beat Michigan with him and Mayne Bogan in 2003. I don't buy unto that one as much though.

Are you saying that Cal has been sandbagging? I can’t see Cal betting against us in Vegas.

I am no Cal apologist... But you simply can not use Vegas odds to make your point. Odds are set, and then moved, based on how people are betting. Not who is perceived by the oddsmaker as a better team.
Rankings, on the other hand, are by definition a relative measure of who is 'better' by people who are supposed to know.
The way the SEC has played this tourney, I have come to the conclusion the it isn't that we choked... rather, those that ranked us did.

As for Cal, I don't like that he took away senior nights and sold our soul to the NBA draft. He can not coach (since UMASS) and having sub-elites and raw kids for a year at a time kept him from being exposed.
BBN is just as culpable because we allowed it to happen... the promise of catching UCLA blinded us, and we've ended up losing so much more.

How can you not see it? You don’t know him from Adam. And further, if anyone was going to do it, it would be a coach like C3, and it would look exactly like his record vs. the spread.

Not saying one way or the other, But this board has totally created a mythical figure in C3.
