90.6 ppg

We need to as bad as the D has been.
Our def rating on Kenpom has gone from mid 30's to mid 50's just since this game. Dropping us from 14 to 18 over all rating on Kenpom. Cal should hire a defensive specialist since he doesn't seem to teach it. I am posting from memory. If I am wrong tell me so. So we are becoming another Iowa.

That is what we are averaging through the first 5 games. I don't recall us ever averaging that many points for the first 5 of any of Cal's previous teams.
To be fair, a more honest take is what we average per 40 minutes. Only scored 77 in regulation and that would’ve brought the ppg down a bit.

I think a lot of the defensive issues will iron themselves out when we get at least one center back. I was at the game and it was evident how overmatched Mitchell was inside. Not having a rim protector led to far too many layups, and our guards often had to leave their man to help off drives which led to open threes.

One thing that isn’t fixable with getting our bigs back is defending off-ball screening action. Hopefully that’s a point of emphasis and we can iron it out some before the Miami game.

The real question is will he stick with it when he gets more size on the floor.
That should depend on which big we get first and skill set. Cals not forcing AB to post up but ugo idk and Z well who knows

If that was the case, there would be 2 separate categories. One for PPG in regulation and 1 in OT. So I think the most honest take is to do it like every metric service and look at PPG as a whole.
Doesn’t change the reality that they weren’t an offensive juggernaut tonight. They couldn’t manage 80 points in regulation.
Seriously.

I've hammered Cal for 2 years over the offense. We're watching good basketball for the first time in a long time.
We have played one good team and Dilly put on a show against them in the first half. Let’s wait for another ranked team before jumping to such conclusions.

I feel like too many people are forgetting that St. Joes lost to what will be one of the worst teams in division one. We’re talking bottom 20 to 30 teams.

I know it sucks when you have to grasp at straws to find something to complain about especially this years offense. It really shows your agenda or lack of basketball knowledge.

Exactly! You get it.

Lotta ppl making sense in this thread, oh my. I agree I think our defensive woes improve with a true center back. I can just see this team getting better and better, honestly our offense can still get better is the crazy thing too. This is gonna be fun to watch 😎

Lol, if you say so, bud.

The 48% 3pt shooting, 52% FG percentage, 24 assists to 9 turnovers all disagree with you. But you do you!

Because their bread and butter is the three ball and they were off that night. They obviously were on tonight. Hit a bunch of contested threes. There's just something about opponents in Rupp. This isn't just a Cal thing. One particular game amongst many that stand out were the Crispin brothers from Penn State. They could've beaten the Bulls that game. Difference today is that we also have shooters. And more than any team I can remember at UK.

What a pathetic attempt to extinguish any positivity that might creep into the program. Let me guess, you want Cal fired?

By the way, it's official. He can't have children.

Cal has completely changed his offensive philosophy. It’s what fans wanted but they still complain. Once the bigs are back, D will change.
Cal hasn't changed anything except the players. Last 3 seasons we haven't the players to play like Cal wants. That's on him for bring in all those transfers. He's gone back to his roots.

The defense will come around especially getting a rim protector back soon. Opposing teams know if they blow by our guards it’s probably an easy layup. How many of those shots at the rim tonight would have been altered or blocked by Z or Bradshaw? The offense might suffer a little but the increase on D will make up for it.

I will counter your point by saying: Arkansas lost to a very poor team a few days ago at home. Does that mean a win over them would not have value? St. Joe will be very dangerous in their league this year. Wouldn't be surprised if they win it. Also, the worst time to play a good team is when they are coming back from a bad loss, esp if the team they are playing is ranked like Ky.

He also brought in a new assistant to help modernize his scheme. You can give credit to Cal for making that adjustment, but there have definitely been adjustments beyond the players on the court.

Could it have something to do with the other schools that we know were buying the top recruits during that period?

Playing without a big is setting this team back. They gotta play totally different with a 7 ft. Different substitutions.
Bettter enjoy seeing Adou Thiero now. He will be afterthought soon like Burke.
