5-foot-9 Isaiah Thomas Says There's a Place in the NBA for 5-foot-9 Tyler Ulis

I would like to see Ulis on GSW or Spurs.

Great organization that will know how to utilize him. He will be fine in NBA.

The good thing about going later in the draft is you go to a much more stable franchise.

That's assuming TU goes late 1st round, which I think he does in this class.

Ulis not only has basketball skills, but he has a great mindset for the game. He has leadership skills and tells everyone what to do and don't do, including Poythress who has been at UK for ages...it seems like.

That's pretty much where every fan says they one of their players who isn't a lottery pick to go. Go look at the Spurs picks over the last few years. There's not much to look at.

And Thomas has a good 30lbs and is a much better athlete.

yeah this is what worries me

both thomas and nate robinson are way stronger and way more explosive

neither are anywhere near ulis as pure point guards, but they're the only two players of reasonably comparable size to play in the nba for quite some time. i thought tj ford was small but he was listed at 6'0 i think

ulis has such a slight frame, and he isn't an athletic freak

but by the same token, has there been in recent years a similarly gifted pure point guard who was a great player at a high, high major in college and didn't make it in the league? i can't think of one

I guess depends on what you mean by "make it in the league." Kendall Marshall comes to mind who is in the league but hardly seeing the court this year and has seen sporadic play in his first three seasons.

i meant somebody roughly equivalent to ulis in size

i didn't mention it, though, and it was like the most important thing

has there been a really good pure point guard in a bcs league or in the big east or mvc or something like that 5'10 or smaller in recent years, who was regarded as a non prospect?

i really can't think of one. jared jordan from marist and marques green from st bonaventure are people who come to mind, and they played years ago at low/mid majors respectively

Phil Pressey

Agree. Might find a nice niche going late in the first round.

phil pressey is a pretty good call

i think he's had ten days with a couple of teams--celtics and sixers

he's faster than ulis but his basketball iq is like 30 points lower

i don't think he shoots as well either. sucker is quick though

He's not a high major guy but I think it will be interesting to see (if they both come out this year) how Ulis and Felder compare to each other both in the draft and their eventual careers.

felder is probably closer to thomas/nate robinson both athletically and as far as playing like a true point guard

it is really interesting

i'm also curious where monte morris goes. i can see how he might be a really good pro

Even if he doesn't make it in the NBA he can have a long career overseas and make a lot of money.

Not sure what level you consider Robinson/Thomas in regards to a pure point guard but Felder leads the nation in APG at 8.8 and also in assist rate at 47.5. I've only got to see him play a few times this year but he seems to have a good bball IQ and he leads his team extremely well.

Obviously playing for Oakland isn't really comparable to playing at UK so it's hard to draw conclusions at this point. Due to his athleticism Felder would probably have a better showing at the combine but I also Imagine Ulis is the type of player coaches/GM's fall in love with due to his heart, hustle, and leadership.

If Ulis ends up being solidly projected as a 1st round pick, then I guess he has to go. Selfishly, however, I really hope he comes back for next season.

Ulis has been playing against the best in college BB players, he has so much talent he can play in the NBA..

So are you not familiar with guys like Muggsy Bogues, Calvin Murphy, Spud Webb, MIchael Adams, Charlie Chriss, Brevin Knight, Earl Boykins, Avery Johnson,Ty Lawson, Damon Stoudamire, etc.? Nate Robinson and Isiah Thomas might be more recent examples, but they are FAR from the "only" ones around Tyler's size or smaller to have successful NBA careers.

And, fwiw, the list is far longer if count people's actual, instead of listed, height. There's more than a few guys in today's league that are actually obviously under 6 feet but still list themselves at 6'0" (just a few that come to mind being JJ Barea, Jameer Nelson, Kyle Lowry, etc.). I've no doubt there's a spot for Ulis in the League.

Yeah, but Ulis most definitely is not 5'9" tall.

He's 5'7.5. Measured 5'8.5 at the last two LeBron skills camps (usually shoes). 5'8 at ky combine, 5'9 with shoes (think they rounded up on both).

Only 23 players in nba history have been listed 5'9 or shorter. Earl boykins was the last tiny player who hung around the league, 10+ years ending in 2012 at 5'5 135

Tyler's size only seems to be an issue on the defensive end, which has validity when he switches and gets caught in mismatch on the block. But he is a very good perimeter defender. Also, players seem to have a difficult time staying in front if him as well.

If you can play you can play. Ulis can play.

The NBA is a mismatch every where, the average height is 6'7. Damn near a good foot taller not to mention the easy 25+lbs minimum players will have on him. And the freak athletes around every bend....

I think tyler can find a spot in the league, but that's the difference, every guy named in this thread (besides mugsy, spud, boykins) may be under 6 feet, but they're not below 5'9 and have 30+ pounds on ulis and superior athleticism as well.

Tyler is a sophomore in college. I think he still has time to add some muscle don't ya think? Or is he stricken to the same weight the rest of his life? Some of yo experts care to weigh in on that?

Every body type is different. JJ Berea weighed 175 in 2006 at portsmouth, Jameer Nelson 185 in college, Isaiah Thomas 189 at deron williams camp in 2011, Lowry is a hoss. Just picking a few names mentioned above. Tyler weighs 155 tops for comparison. I see him more like Earl boykins, weighing 135 in college and 135 when he retires 12 years later, but I guess we'll find out about tyler. As I already stated I think he'll find a spot in the league though....

Sure but look at his frame, dude is hella lean and cut. If he made a hobby out of eating and not exercising, he would gain pounds. I hope he can put on 20+ pounds of muscle, he will with out a doubt need it
