I’m surprised this wasn’t brought up after the Duke game.
I believe Carr and Owen both played in the first half after they got 2 fouls, which I was pleasantly surprised to see.
Nothing annoyed me more in the past than to have a guys get 2 fouls early, then set the rest of the first half, only to end up with three fouls for the whole game.

Very antiquated way of coaching. I hate it also.

Yeah, Pope sat Oweh most of the first half of that game but put him in around the 5 minute mark which was smart because the game was getting away a bit and got him in the flow for his great second half.

One distinction that must be considered with the previous coaching staff and now is the pretty obvious adversarial atmosphere that existed between Cal and the refs, and Cal’s paranoia that the refs were out to get him (which was probably true is some situations). So he had greater reason to fear a key player being tagged with a phantom 3rd foul in the first half.

I have yet to see a single obviously contentious or confrontational exchange between Pope and a ref. Hell I find myself rarely paying much attention at all to the refs anymore other than the occasional poor call, which is a refreshing change of pace.
