The athletes today would destroy those guys....

That's literally 4 of the top 10 greatest players to ever touch a basketball on one court.

That statement comes up more when talking about pre-merger guys. The 80's were the beginning of what is more closely relatable to modern basketball.

I agree.

But Macy was in the NBA during this time and some on here ( @Stonewall12 ) believe he played with the fiddlin 5.

'87 is way too damn late to even jokingly make a comment about players now and then as there isnt a huge gap in athleticism. Now, any time some one throws out Oscar Robinson's era, i would challenge that one....

I must certainly wouldn't challenge Oscars ability to thrive now, but a number of the guys he faced are a different story.

Really, you think the big o would ave a triple double? Double double? Id bet he MIGHT ave double figures scoring, mabye.....

The Big O still averaged 19 and 8 on a championship team with Kareem in the early 70s.

He would have done well in any era.

Thomas is probably my favorite PG ever. Dude was as gritty and tough as they come. Just a natural competitor.

What irks me about the "then & now" debate is this.

Yes, the modern athlete is in better shape, stronger, faster, blah, blah

They have also been on supplements (not illegal roids) and weight training since elementary / middle school. The guys from past generations didn't do that kind of thing.

I remember watching the Bad Boys 30 for 30. They talked about how Jordan went on a serious conditioning program the season before the Bulls finally beat the Pistons. He got serious about it... after college... 4-5 years into his NBA career. Think about what he would have been had he been on creatine and whatever other GNC stuff he could get with a personal trainer in HS and college.

Yes, today's players are better athletes because of the changing times and ideas, not becasue they just are. You can't compare the athleticism of the Big O with guys today. It's not apples to apples

supplements? Hell some of these guys barely got proper food to eat, Eric Bledsoe lived in a damn car, dont think he was taking anything other than what he could get his damn hands on.

They played in a time when palming and traveling calls were made...and they also couldn't mug/hold people the way defenses do now...

Yeah, you cant mug people in the NBA now. They cleaned that up a while back and the game is a much better product that the garbage that college basketball has become.
