1984 FF team in Lexington

I remember them well. Bowie averaging 10 rebounds a game on one leg.

That FF game was just awful.

My favorite UK team of all time is ‘78. But ‘84 is up there.

Had Bowie not been hurt I just wonder how good we would have been. Of course, had he not been hurt he wouldn’t have been on the ‘84 team.

I guess you had to be there and growing up during that time.

The Georgetown game haunts me to this day. 3 for 33, Michael Graham. I digress.

This team started 12-0 and will never forget eating at Long John Silver's in Pikeville after we played a high school game and hearing they had lost at Auburn.

I had a gaudy 1 point, 1 rebound stat in the JV game. I played in the varsity game that night and recorded 1 assist. My basketball future was flourishing.

Sam Bowie was the first unicorn and if not beset by injuries, who knows.....

Great, beautiful and innocent times!

55 years young now, where has the time gone.

That team was special....

You guys around that time, Auburn had a fat bald kid who loved torching Kentucky. That night Auburn knocked Kentucky off, this kid went for like 20 and 10. My 55 year old memory recalls him being 6'1, 290. Maybe 5'9, 300.

We later ended this guys' college career, leaving him crying on the floor.

Remember him? Ha!

I do! Loved watching that game.

One more and I will hush. We've not changed a whole lot in 40 years and we were as insufferable then as now. We just didn't have internet. Grumblings overheard after that Auburn loss consisted of Kentucky sucking, being ovetrated and quite frankly that Cliff/Joe had to go!

Yes @ ppg...we started a center w/ a broken shot at power forward, a power forward at one wing, a 2 guard who struggled all season to find his shot at the other, and a p.g. who, even though he had his best season shooting the ball, had a well below average jump shot. With the lack of shooting, it was hard to find space for our one unstoppable weapon, big Mel, to operate. He often had to resort to that 15 foot jumper just to get up a shot. That team could really struggle to score the ball at times, and the georgetown game is just the most painful, glaring example.
Only averaged 68 ppg. Would you have guessed that?

Looks like (L to R): Beal, Bennett, Sky, Bowie, Master, Harden, Byrd, Heitz, and some random dude.
Leroy Byrd I mistook for Beal; forgot how short Byrd is, and still mind-boggled to think that dude earned a scholarship to play ball at UK. Can't believe I didn't recognize Hardin; I loved his game during the '86 season. Hardin to Walker remains my favorite UK alley-oop combination.

What isn't often remembered about the terrible Georgetown game is that it wasn't decided until fairly late in the game. The 2nd half was even worse than that game with West Virginia, but that 84 team still played great defense. We couldn't rewatch the games then as we do now, but my memory says that we were still in it until about 5 minutes to go.

If we could've strung back to back baskets together twice during the 2nd half, we probably win that game

Actually played against Paul Andrews in high school and on some outside courts in London. His brother was pretty good too. Paul had some hops in high school. Also against Bret Bearup's brother.

I was a sophomore at the time and the thing I most remember is seeing Bowie, Turpin, and Heitz walking around campus. It's funny I never did run into Byrd (the only one I was taller than). We also had a 6'6" Lady Kat at the time. I can't remember her name.

The Georgetown game was and is my biggest disappointment for a UK game. I still don't like Georgetown because of it.

Used to see Bowie a lot; had a class in the same building a couple of times a week. Funniest thing was watching Bennet and Walker break dancing at a party. I dominated the sh!t outta Byrd one Saturday at the Seton Center; stark demonstration of why he wasn't UK material...

This was the first full year that I was a UK fan, (picked up the 83 team late in the season after moving to Lexington in 81 at age 10).

Recall the first BYU game where it was close at the half and we beat them by 40 in the 2nd half (and then played them again in the NCAAs).

Used to listen to the games on the radio and shoot hoops with my Nerf goal. They hit more shots than I did.
