14 KenPom seasons: best&most consistent programs&coaches

Part 1:

http://kenpom.com/index.php?y=2002

This post includes lots of KenPom research-data. It's SO much data that it'll take several posts. A very good question is how valid any of this data is, but my focus here is rather to just present lots of KenPom data in a few, new formats. I find much of the data interesting and debatable, and it brings back lots of memories...in fact, 14 years-worth. (Some of the data is incomplete and/or leads to unimportant or skewed conclusions, so I'll just let you be your own judge [as to the data's validity].)

Ranking the best, KenPom, season's-end, overall, team scores (2001-02 through 2014-15, best to worst):

(ps, of course, with all the following, small number variations, who can really say just how much real difference there is between any-two numbers/results/years/sets of teams???)

The following coaches' teams' average 'season's-ending KenPom ranking' over their 10-best of past-14 seasons (per KenPom) (regardless of where they coached during that time)(the lower # the better):

Coach K: 3.9
Self: 5.4
Williams: 5.6
Calipari: 6.3
Ryan: 8.0
Pitino: 9.2
Donovan: 9.5
Matta: 10.8
Izzo: 11.4
Boeheim:14.8
Few: 18.8
Wright: 20.5
Beilein: 32.6
--
Keep in mind: this KenPom data only goes back to (including) 2001-02, so it doesn't include Pitino's amazing stretch at UK or K's even-more-amazing, late-'80s-early-'90s, Duke stretch.

Consideration: Some coaches, although much less consistent during the regular season, consistently coach well in the NCAA tournament (Izzo, UCONN coaches) and vice versa (Self, who is, along with Coach K, one of the two most overall recently-consistent coaches [and K's and Self's overall home record and overall true road games record supports this, as well], is also consistently known for his very best teams stumbling early in the Tourney).

Consideration: some coaches get very little 'top talent', yet, year-in-year-out, consistently excel over coaches who have much more talent (bo ryan, who generally speaking --especially until only very recently -- ONLY signs regional talent. ps, you will see, also, in the data, that Ryan has coached both offense and defense extremely well.)

Consideration: Just because a coach coached poorly, say, five years-ago doesn't mean he isn't one of the top-5 coaches today -- he may've learned a lot, so 'he' could have a poor overall average 10-year KenPom score. Also, maybe his five-best seasons weren't recent; maybe one bad recruiting year hurt his future talent and results.

Consider: 'strength of schedule(s)' (differences between teams)

Consider: how key injuries can affect team outcomes

3) Williams: 2.4
4) Self: 2.8
4) Donovan: 2.8
6) Pitino: 3.8

7) Ryan: 5.4 (of these coaches, usually has, by far, the least heralded recruits)
Izzo: 6.2
Boeheim: 7.6
Barnes: 9.4
Few: 11
Marshall: 14

Ken Pomeroy Wikipedia:

Some random Ken Pomeroy Youtube interview:

(sorry if not helpful or interesting)

Eh, I don't mind crunching some numbers... always interesting to see.

I see:

* ignoring history (still)

* being upset with the messenger (still)

(Got it!)

Hey, I was the first to say, "We all need to slow down & question what all these numbers mean, and how big of a difference there really is between them."

But still, after I posted ALL these details and a variety of number comparisons...

...unfortunately, I could see your lack of response comin' 'a mile away'.

See, NOT ONE of our hundreds-to-thousands of 'RuppRafters' ('pep-rally-only') posters (who, each, consider EACH & EVERY UK TEAM 'one of the best ever!!!') tried to acknowledge three posts-worth of KenPom's objective, comparative, diverse & weighted historical data (which doesn't always put UK, or its coaches, in the best light). The data ALMOST ALWAYS places UK in an extremely good light, but the fact that it doesn't ALWAYS do so, apparently really, REALLY pisses ya off. (silence)

So, for you all, it's apparently best to not comment; let ALL this statistical comparisons data just fade from your memories!

Continue with your ignorant-of-history, extremely simple, back-patting-ONLY threads...

"If Kentucky can't be the best at EVERYthing, then we won't even play!"

That's what it sounds like anyway.

When are all you dummies going to see that Kansas is just plain better??

Well no, I definitely wouldn't say Kansas is "plain better", overall, because that's not true, as each 'blueblood' can lay arguably rightful claim to the #1 all-time position.

Kansas has the most winning seasons, most non-losing seasons, most conference championships, most First-Team All-Americans (individuals and total selections), is often cited as having the "statistically best homecourt advantage in any sport", has had arguably the most dominant player in basketball history, has had the inventor of the game as its coach, will soon house the 'original rules of basketball' display, has had the most consecutive 30-win seasons, has provided our program (both long ago and recently) with two of its most successful coaches (plus several other UK, men's basketball coaches) whose combined wins total close to half of our all-time wins, an unpleasant memory is that Kansas once beat us by 55 points (and several times by over 20 -- I think they may beat us by around 20 this season) and, over the past 35 seasons (in the 'modern era') our head-to-head record with KU is near .500, they've been to the same number of 'modern era' Final Fours (8), have been to more consecutive NCAA tourneys, way too much emphasis has been placed on OUR '48, '49 and '51 "championships" (compared to today's 'ships, weak competition = back then, just one tourney win equalled "final four"), Kansas has been slightly more "highly consistent" -- both their program and their current coach -- since 2002 (per KenPom data), plus, our building is named after a native Jayhawk (resident and KU grad who learned basketball at KU).

But, as I said, each 'blueblood' holds arguably rightful claim to #1.

#1 is a matter of opinion, but based on all kinds of stats and considerations. All I'm saying is that, around here, that question doesn't seem to be up for debate, whereas it really should be.

My personal opinion is that Kansas, overall, probably is about 3rd or 4th all-time. (What more will we find out about UNCheat? Why hasn't UCLA been at all consistent? All but one of Wooden's 'Ships came in an era when the NCAA Tournament didn't invite many teams and the conference champions who were invited, a lot of times, weren't very good/talented or, if they were, sometimes turned down invitations = much weaker tournaments, pre-1975.)

Yet you continue to come here and pose as a UK fan. If you don't like this board, then get lost. No one cares, really. But don't lecture us on our board, about our board, when you're an unvited fake.

Here's and idea, you can always go back to Phog.net, JayhawksBuiltYourPrograms. If you'd rather not, and prefer to keep coming to this board, then the best advice I can give is to suck it up and deal with it. Either way, makes no difference to the rest of us.

Lol, nobody in the world thinks Kansas even arguably holds a claim to being the top program except (some) Kansas fans. You can put up all the stats you want. No doubt Kansas is an all-time Top 5 program, but that's it.

Kansas has a losing record vs UCLA, UK, UNC, and Indiana.

Kansas has a losing record in title games

Kansas has a losing record in the Final 4

Kansas has a losing record vs the SEC

Kansas has a losing record vs the AP top 10

Kansas fans are idiots.

Anyone catch his prediction that Kansas would most likely beat Kentucky by 20 this year? lol

Again, Kansas fan here and I don't even believe that. :)

I do find his "in your face" "I'm really a Kentucky fan" schtick funny (and no, I only skim the novels he posts here). He is persistent though in claiming he's a Kentucky fan, although I think one of your posters nailed his phog.net moniker.

Yes, you'll notice most sports-writers who construct "all-time greatest teams" lists say they have tremendous trouble understanding where exactly to rank KU, all-time.

For example, Kansas has a higher win-percentage than UK over the past 30 seasons and KU gave other top programs their best coaches and, although KU hasn't won many championships, they've earned a whole lot of Runner-Ups.

If you were to combine KU's rather lackluster "versus" records (some of their 'versus' records are only a few games off, and many losses were close) (combine KU's lackluster 'versus' record) with OTHER important pieces of evidence -- even if you were to have understandably great trouble quantifying KU's many "intangibles", KU is still, in many historians' opinions, an overall top-5 program (and number #1 or 2 in major categories).

KU's 30-season record vs both UK and IU will likely soon be tied, by the end of this-next season.

KU is 5-6 vs UK since the 'modern era' intro of the shot-clock (fall 1985: 30 seasons-ago). The two will play each other this season and the odds of UK (or any team) winning in AFH right now are between 5%-10%. KU's had only three losses in AFH in 8+ seasons: one by 3 pts, one by 5, and one vs a top-10 team after a horrible team tragedy (supposedly, no KU players or coaches had slept the night before). Point being: it practically takes an "A" game to win in AFH, so UK and KU might soon be tied, head-to-head, in the 'modern era'. Also, it's taken three wins by two of UK's all-time greatest teams just for UK to be barely ahead of KU, 6-5 (and two of those games were decided by 10 pts or less vs one of KU's least talented [on paper] teams, and in the other game, UK had one of the most dominant teams of all-time -- if not THE most dominant -- so statistical outliers should even-out soon).

Over the past 30 seasons, KU is only a single game behind IU, and will likely play them this season, in Maui. (Note: IU beat KU in OT for the 1953 NCAA Title.)

(KU will also likely play & beat UCLA in Maui, this season.)

KU also has a 'modern era' winning record vs UNC (and UCONN, btw).

Finally reached my limit and am putting OP on ignore. If we all did, then we wouldn't be subjected to his drivel.

And, again, what seems to be most exasperating about me (in your opinions) seems to be all the historical facts of which I remind you.

Damn those facts!

And damn those ppl for pointing them out!

I'm not here to argue, but you act like I don't know what I'm saying.

When our board (as a whole) purposely ignores other programs' legitimate claims to "#1" (and usually makes fun of them), I have repeatedly shown the ability to quickly point-out why the board is wrong.

You should appreciate my help. :)

What -- is this supposed to be "Big-Blue Fairy-tale Land"???

You should note that this post is one of the few in which I haven't presented statistical data. If more posters posted as I do -- with stats -- then this board would be more objective & better.

This is not a joke or hyperbole. I just finished a three hundred + page book on the history and uses of salt. The book is called "SALT". I read it.

I did NOT make it through the OP's post though. Good Lord.

Kansas is a fine program. I love my Hawks and will stack them up against anyone, anytime.

Kentucky is a fine program that has had a lot of recent (and historical) success.

Don't really need a statistics-laden tome of a post to know that.

But I think we will hang another Helms, you know, just in case the OP is right.

Yes, there were a lot of stats, but they were simplified & easy, so please try harder (because apparently you are more than capable).

I hate summaries, because summaries usually skew the data. For your sake, though, I'll try, below.

-----------

In my OP, I analyzed all the KenPom final, comparative ratings for all the Final Four teams since the beginning of the 2001-02 season (14 seasons-ago).

I made a point to ask, "Who's to say how significant these small, numerical-ranking differences are?"

---------------

With higher scores going to teams with well-balanced offenses & defenses, and more points going to teams with better offenses/defenses, and with 'strength of schedule' being a factor, the KenPom Top-6 teams over the past 14 seasons were (in order):

'15 UK
'08 KU champs
'13 UL champs
'12 UK champs
'02 Duke
'05 Illinois

-------------

The top-6 championship games, in terms of combined teams' strength (in order, past-14 seasons):

'08 KU/Memphis
'05 Illinois/UNC
'15 Duke/Wisc
'13 UL/Michigan
'07 UF/Ohio St
'12 UK/KU

(Note: Uconn's two, most recent championship games are at the very bottom of the 'combined Championship Game teams' strength rankings.)

-----------

Next, the top-10 strongest Final Fours (the strength of all-four teams considered)(in order, past-14 seasons):

'08
'07
'04
'15
'05
'09
'02
'12
'13
'06

------------

Top-7 KenPom offenses, past-14 seasons (in order):

'15 Wisc
'14 Michigan
'04 Wake
'12 Mizzou
'14 Duke
'11 Ohio St.
'15 ND

---------

When comparing the KenPom #1 defenses each of the past-14 seasons, here is the rank-order, beginning with the best:

1st: '09 Memphis
Tie for 2nd: '12 UL and '13 Wisc
Tie for 4th: '15 UVA and '10 USC
6th: '15 UK
Tie for 7th: '04 Pitt, '05 Wash St., '06 Iowa

---------

The only team to finish 1st in KenPom O and D was '02 Duke, and '08 KU was 1st in D and 2nd in O. There have been several "ranked-3 & 4" combos.

--------
KenPom's best coaches, past-14 seasons, in order:

1st metric, in order -- consistency and throwing out the worst:

K
Self
Williams
Cal
Ryan

---

2nd metric, in order -- the 'highest highs', but not measuring consistency as much:

K
Cal
Williams
Self
Donovan
Pitino

-------

'Program Consistency' metric, over past-14 seasons, calculation of which teams consistently finished the best, in KenPom (in top-10 rank-order)(it's an average of a team's 14, final KenPom ranks; only 14 data points):

KU: score: 7
Duke: score: 9
Wisc: score: 15
Mich St.: score: 18
Florida: score: 19.57
UL: score: 19.85
UK: score: 23
Arizona: score: 26.71
UNC: score: 26.78
Ohio St: score: 28

------

Kansas has finished in the KenPom top-20 14/14 times, Duke 13/14, UK 10/14, UNC 9/14.

Duke and Kansas have both finished in the KenPom top-10 10/14 times, UK 7/14, UNC 5/14.

Duke and Kansas have both finished in the KenPom top-5 seven of 14 times, UK 5/14, UNC 4/14.

Listen here you pedantic ass. I get stats. I have a Masters from KU which includes stats 808 and 908.

I don't need you to "boil it down' for me.

KU is great. Gotcha.

Kinda knew that.
