Which teams have the best shot at No. 1 recruit R.J. Barrett? We asked the experts.

BY BEN ROBERTS

This weekend, R.J. Barrett — the No. 1 basketball recruit in the class of 2018 — will take the first of five official visits as he works toward a college decision.

Barrett’s first stop is Lexington, and it’ll be an important 48 hours for UK, which is still looking for its first commitment from the 2018 class.

The other contenders for the 6-foot-7 shooting guard from Ontario are Arizona, Duke, Michigan and Oregon, and Barrett will take official visits to all of those campuses in the coming weeks. He has said that he plans to sign with the school of his choice in November.

Which of those five programs is most likely to land his commitment?

To answer that question, the Herald-Leader reached out to five national recruiting analysts — Jerry Meyer and Andrew Slater of 247Sports, Scout.com’s Evan Daniels, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Rivals.com’s Corey Evans — to get their thoughts on where Barrett’s recruitment stands going into these official visits.

Our expert panel was given the list of Barrett’s five finalists and asked to rank the star player’s three most likely landing spots, in order. Those answers were tallied up to form a consensus ranking of the favorites in Barrett’s recruitment.

It’s worth noting that — since reclassifying from 2019 to 2018 this summer — Barrett is still in the early stages of his recruitment, relative to many of his peers in the 2018 class. His father, Rowan Barrett, has talked to the Herald-Leader recently about the importance these official visits will play in finding the right fit for his son.

That said, the answers from our panel indicate a favorite has emerged heading into these campus trips. Here’s how the recruiting analysts are handicapping it:

R.J. Barrett was one of the top players on the Nike circuit this summer before leading Canada to a gold medal at the U19 World Cup in July.

5. Michigan: It surprised some that the Wolverines made the final five, especially with the summer buzz that Kansas and Texas both had a decent shot in Barrett’s recruitment. Those two schools were cut, and Michigan survived, but our expert panelists aren’t high on the Wolverines’ chances. Only one recruiting analyst included Michigan on his list, and that was a third-place vote. Barrett’s official visit to Ann Arbor is scheduled for Sept. 29.

4. Arizona: The Wildcats showed up on only two of five ballots, but they were the second choice on both of those. Arizona freshman Emmanuel Akot played alongside Barrett on last year’s Team Canada U17 squad that traveled to Spain, and the Wildcats currently have the No. 1 recruiting class nationally for 2018. Barrett will be in Tucson for an official visit Sept. 21

3. Oregon: The Ducks have had a lot of success recruiting Canadian players in recent years, and they just edged out Arizona for the No. 3 spot on this list. Three of our five experts included Oregon in their top three for Barrett, and the Ducks received a pair of second-place votes. Dillon Brooks, Chris Boucher and Dylan Ennis — all key players on last season’s Final Four team — are Canadians, and the program continues to recruit that country strongly. Barrett will visit Oregon on Sept. 23.

2. Kentucky: The good news for the Cats is that they were the only team to be included on all five of our recruiting experts’ lists (and UK got one first-place vote). The bad news: The Cats were a pretty distant second place. Still, sitting in the No. 2 spot going into those all-important official visits isn’t a bad place to be, and Rowan Barrett has had wonderful things to say about John Calipari and UK’s program during recent conversations with the Herald-Leader. UK has had success recruiting Canadians under Calipari. Jamal Murray, Mychal Mulder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are from Ontario, and Trey Lyles was born in Canada. Barrett has specifically mentioned Murray as a close friend who has filled him in on the positives of playing at Kentucky. The Cats also get first crack at making a good impression on Barrett, who is expected to arrive in town Friday.

1. Duke: According to our panelists, the Blue Devils are the clear favorite going into Barrett’s official visits. Four of the five experts in our poll put Duke in the No. 1 spot. (In a surprise, one recruiting analyst left the Blue Devils off of his list completely). The possibility of a backcourt that includes Barrett, No. 1 point guard Tre Jones (already committed to Duke) and top-five recruit Cameron Reddish (expected by many to pick Duke) is a very real possibility, and a scary one for the Blue Devils’ future opponents. As is often the case these days, Duke seems to be UK’s biggest hurdle to landing Barrett’s commitment. The No. 1 recruit is scheduled to visit Durham on Sept. 15.

He just needs to look at how successful we have been with Canadian players. Lyles, Murray, and Magloire all were good to great players for us. Plus we have another in Alexander that had a chance to be very good. Cote and Mulder were the only disappointments, but neither was expected to be more than role players. Any other school with a better group of Canadian players then the ones we have had the past 18 years?

We shall see. Just the idea of both Barrett and Reddish at Dook makes me want to vomit.

Wonder what Capel is buying all the puppets.

Then Duke can float out "well, his academics weren't good enough for Duke"/"Something fishy was going on" when they don't get him. Rinse and repeat. It's Capel's MO and the media won't call him out because he's their sugar daddy, ala Self.

His right hand man got caught cheating at Oklahoma hence the bloated bastard getting fired. He's shady and corrupt and I wouldn't put anything past him.

I think it's pretty simple. Duke staff leaks that they lead for everyone. They think it creates buzz and lends an aura to them. An air of invincibility.

UK, on the other hand, leaks nothing. Omertà.

My monthly "Coach K can't leave the game fast enough" post. I don't know if it's His influence on these guys or what.. But this all stems from him.

With the turmoil that Duke has had last year, and the rigors of a school like that, coupled with Cal's near perfect success with getting his guys to the NBA... how can these recruits all be favoring Duke. If we're all in agreement that "They aren't and these pundits are just wrong".. then what gives? Why bet against Kentucky and therefore be wrong which makes you look bad?

And ya know. Duke getting these top guys and can't even get them #1 overall.
They regress at Duke.

I wonder if K spills the beans on NCAA cooperation to the recruits to ensure the recruits know they will have a strong seed in a weak bracket in the tourney

That's a great point... do these recruits know that they will be given special treatment, including but not limited to, easier calls, better brackets, better chance for a title, no NCAA interference, etc??

More importantly, is CoachK and staff relaying this information to them?

It can't be stated enough just how detrimental Coach K is to the landscape of this game, but also to Coach Cal's tenure here. He's direct reason we've lost out on two titles, why we might not get some recruits, etc. This guy needs to retire already, by any means necessary.

I don't mind losing to Uconn, or losing recruits to Kansas.. as far as I can tell it was legitimate (aside from Kansas' negative recruiting..).. that's how it goes, can't win them all. But playing the game with a hand tied behind our backs? Absolutely not.

"All of these recruits" in 2017 were supposed to be favoring Duke, and then what happened? Whiff after whiff after whiff. The only reason they were able to take questionable cases like Duval and Bagley is because they missed on so many other players.

Truth is, nobody has any idea what Barrett will do. Barrett himself probably doesn't have any idea. He just reclassified, and he is just beginning his campus visits. This time of year, everyone builds up Duke into a big boogie man. It's just like every year. Duke's fans do the same with us. As far as our recruiting class is concerned, we need Quickley plus 2 elite wings. That means signing 2 out of Johnson, Williamson, Barrett, Reddish. We don't need every 5 star wing. Right now it looks like Shittu, Quickley, Johnson are leaning to UK. If that is what happens, then we just need 1 out of Williamson, Reddish, Barrett.

This is actually true...and it's also sad but true there are actually respected analysts that throw gas on the fire....Slater & all the cronies that imitate whatever he says.

Honest question: do you think these analysts actually care when they get their guesses wrong? I mean, maybe a little bit. But they change their picks enough that they will eventually get it right.

They are just fishing for clicks and attention. Then they'll do it again next year with the next batch of recruits.

Cal doesn't really play the analyst game with recruiting. He plays his own game. And he typically plays it pretty well.

I have no idea. I assume people try to do their jobs to the best of their ability. Duke isn't a bad guess, they have been right there with us in recruiting, easily a top5 program in that area.. But they aren't Kentucky.

If you're doing something that puts food on the table, IDC what my feelings are.. I'm trying to get the job done right. Not picking Kentucky is a good way to look bad.

IDK if it's being in bed together or just incompetence. Or maybe bad information. Maybe you're right from before that Duke leaks this info where as Kentucky doesn't.

There is no way there aren't some back-end shenanigans going on re: EVERY elite prospect projected to Duke by these recruiting guys. I don't what it would be but it is just too predictable and frequently recurring to not have something going on. IMO.

Whatever recruiting analysts were staunch proponents of "Knox to Duke".. they aren't too good at their jobs in my eyes. I'm less likely to believe what they say. Some of these guys had to say.. "Well wait a second, all we hear is what 1 or 2 people are saying.. but I have these reasons to believe he may go to Kentucky, I'm going to hang tight on this one, or maybe even give Kentucky the edge".. It's those guys I'm going to trust in the future.

Just so you know...its not all dark but it'll be a fight I'm sure!

Tidbit for those who will not watch the vid
Barrett told T.J. that Cal was the greatest coach ever!

Also remember...the Murray's are in their ear, even Jamal himself, & have nothing but good to say of UK & Cal.

If you look at the composite top ten on 247 they have landed Jones and lead for Barret and Reddish. That's not really as dire as everyone here is making it seem. Duke has done really well with the top tier wings it has brought in recently. If it were bigs that would be a different story but I'm not that surprised people think they lead for two of the top wings in the class.

Is Capel trying to buy titles in K's last years. I bet he's handing out bags of cash

Let me remind you all Dukes "best class ever" just lost to South Carolina in the NCAAT

That class wasn't their best class ever without Giles. A healthy Giles and they beat USCjr..

Whatever happens, I'm not looking forward to ESPN's narrative that will follow. Best recruit in the current class, and then two weeks later they add a top5 player for 2018 for a clear early lead in 2018.

Get ready. I would not be surprised to see something along the lines of "Move over Calipari, there's a new recruiting sheriff in town"

Regarding Canadian players . . . I would suggest that neither Lyles nor Murray accomplished what was expected of them (a) coming out of high school, and (b) after they had been at U.K. for a month.

Just MHO, of course, and maybe off-point. What do you think, Poe ?
