That dunk is CRAZY!!!
I remember seeing it as a kid and that was before all of these bouncy Nike and Adidas Basketball shoes. He was wearing the leather Converses.

Bath slippers or bare feet, no problem for Dirk. Looked like he paused midway for a smoke.
Not sure I've seen a better dunk....
One hell of a dunk and he was a great college player it was a shame it could not control his habits I think he would have been a good pro player. I loved watching that team play.
Too bad they didn’t have 10 camera angles back then. There’s not an angle that does it justice.

Why didn't he play professionally?
Dirk Minniefield was a great passer too and really made a positive impression on Larry Bird and the Celtics and their fans when he had some good games when he was a Boston Celtic in the late 1980s.
I remember that. I had a nerf goal in my room and would try to emulate great UK plays as I watched the games on my black and white tv lol. Good times.
I remember watching that game (and the play of course) as a kid. What a dunk. Took off from outside the lane about 13 feet out and still had his head on the rim.
I’m to young for that dunk. The best dunk I’ve ever seen was the WCS dunk on that guy from Cincinnati in the NCAA tourney
He played 3 years in the NBA. Started 52 games his second year. Just didn’t pan out I assume.
This two other best dunks!! Derek Anderson dunk over UofL’s Nate Johnson, and Rex Chapman’s dunk on UofL!

He did but if I remember correctly and I am sure some one on this board can confirm or not. Dirk got into drugs etc and wrecked his pro career.
I was at that game and never heard Rupp that loud. The floors were shaking. I thought my ears would explode. It was fabulous.

Houston (where Dirk played in 1987) was the NBA champion in 1986 and Boston (where Dirk played in 1988) was runner-up in 1986 and 1987. He really opened the eyes of Larry Bird and others by how he played in Boston before things fell apart for him.

That one and James Lee’s dunk on the Russian national team was a close second !
He had another one vs St. John's that was nasty as well that year. Another one from that season I always liked was the MKG slam vs Portland right after Davis had a lob dunk on the possession before.
After all these years, for me it's still the best dunk I've ever seen. That's subjective, of course. But I never get tired of watching that dunk. Thanks for posting.
Wonder where he was Saturday night. The last thing I read was he was working for the nba counseling the young kids about drugs and alcohol.

I'd love to see that end zone camera at the start of the clip following the play from ground level. Would have really showed off that dunk even more.
Sheppard had 2 of my favorite plays. One he dunked on an IU player from outside of the freethrow lane by the baseline.

The other was a miss but he jumped from just inside the freethrow line and tried to dunk on Antonio McDyess. It barely missed but he was fouled. Wish I could see that one again.
