Looks like maybe Mitch has his own agenda. Cal must be so into Mitch's head that he was bound and determined to 1.) make the hire himself and 2.) hire someone he could control. Guess Mitch didn't like the Crafts' flying their plane around and being in control so he decided to go rogue and hire Pope all by himself. I have not heard if the guaranteed NIL money from the Crafts is still on the table. If not, then another reason not to like the hire. And to pay Pope that salary is yet another reason not to like the deal.
