Hoping Cal is seeing the success the Miami Heat are having utilizing their zone part time.

Would be easy to acquire the nuts and bolts of it from UK’s Pat Riley and Spoelstra. Bam and Tyler would assist. Take the staff to visit. It’s not rocket science.

Could be valuable for the upcoming young team.

Have to make some adjustments this time through.

People need to give up on the whole notion of Cal playing zone. We’ve had about eight zillion threads on that topic over the past 15 years. And they were all futile.

It ain’t ever gonna happen. I’m not sure the man even knows how to coach zone. That old dog ain’t learning new tricks.

This is the exact type of team that wouldn't benefit from the zone. Cal doesn't play zone because he hates zone defense, he doesn't play it because there are more important things to use practice time on. This team will have basically zero college basketball experience and they'll sure have zero experience playing together. They'll have enough trouble just learning to play has a cohesive unit. Throwing in trying to teach a zone just isn't going to work.

In the words of Ron Swanson, "Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing." This team will have trouble enough whole-assing one thing.

It will take two weeks for them to learn the 20 second weave.

Cal doesn't watch film.

No doubt. I still get upset thinking about the excuse Cal used with Shady Sharpe. He's behind and doesn't know the plays.

Really!?!? If you've played basketball and earned a D1 scholarship I'm certain you can learn enough to provide minutes. Basketball isn't Newtonian mechanics.

Cal won't deploy a zone because he would have to learn it first. And then he would have to teach it. He can't even handle OOB plays...offensively and defensively.

Wasn't there talk that Cal was talking to Heat Assistant Coach Chris Quinn about coming in as an assistant at UK? I seem to remember that occurring. Of course, I would suspect Quinn's next job will be a NBA HC.

This would rarely ever happen bc Cal is one of the laziest coaches in the game. It’s funny… people think bc he yells loud and acts a fool in games that he coaches hard. He coaches loud. There is a difference.

Cal is so unwilling to try anything to win much of the time. Only on rare occasions will he actually try it. He did zone for about 10-12 possessions at Arky this year while Reeves was going off. It helped us win the game bc the Hogs (who sucked at shooting the 3) started jacking perimeter shots. He knew we couldn’t guard Arky one on one from the game at Rupp… and he actually capitulated. Our team absolutely sucked defensively but he refused zone 99% of the time. He should have played it much of the season bc of the liability of Oscar on defense. The Arky game probably had more to do with him wanting to win and get the bye though. That way he take a couple more days off before SEC tourney.

He is on cruise control and has been for some time.

He won’t zone unless it benefits him personally.

Winning games stopped being important to Cal a while back.

Cal hates it because he doesn’t understand or can’t coach it.
