…if he’s not going to attempt any more 3’s than Brandon freaking Garrison.

Since day one Pope has been adamant in nearly every press conferences about getting 32-35 3pt FGA’s up per game, yet rarely do we actually DO it. We only got 27 tonight, and several of those were too late to matter.

If ever there was a game when we needed to hit that number, it was this game. And Brea in particular MUST shoot more.

Also, if I’m Pope and I watch Andrew Carr pass up one more wide open 3, I’m benching him. And you can’t use his back as an excuse — he’s been doing that all season. After he did it in the first half, Bama didn’t respect him the rest of the game.

Agreed. The other teams know Brea and Jr are shooters. Bama didn’t let us shoot the 3s by our main guys. That’s why Garrsison was open… maybe Coach Pope will design more plays for those 2.

Are we watching the same games to see how they are guarding Brea? Hard to get shots off when you have the attention he gets.

Carr just needs to not play right now. His back is obviously bothering him and he isn't playing well because of it.

What struck me is that every time Brea or Robinson got the ball there was a defender in their jock. JR needs to have his feet set, Many attempts were off balance and/or rushed. On the other hand, Bama players seemed to get wide open looks all day, albeit many from very deep.

Every team in the conference is wise to Brea's 3pt shooting. Need to find a way to get him and JR some looks.

Teams are playing to take away the 3pt shot. We can either make them pay by driving and finishing or we need to push the ball and get more of those early shot clock three's in transition. We haven't been getting enough of those and I think this is one of the ways that we miss Kerr. Early in the season he pushed the ball for early offense better than anyone.

Because like many games this season, the opposing team players live inside our jerseys....guys it is difficult to even take a dribble, or find some way in desperation to make a pass. Fundamentals: We do not use picks (we always dribble wide to make it easy for the defender to keep up with the dribbler). Brea could barely struggle to get open enough to catch a pass....I sure wish that we could play defense the way our opponents do. We have seen teams do this to us since the Western Kentucky game- it's not about talent.

Brea really does have trouble finding open looks. He’s not athletic enough to create them on his own and the “nation’s best shooter” line has been blabbed so often that defenses know to keep him smothered.

That is exactly when the defensive strategy that we've been facing started.

If we ran the damn offense Pope had them running earlier this season, Alabama would be worn to the bone trying to play defense. We have a handful of guys who can knock down the three. Kobe was lazy today. You can't STAND THERE and let the defense outnumber your guys 5-4.

Andddd here’s another post complaining about offense when we scored 97 points and gave up 102. OP why no complaints about the defense?

Because everybody and their brother knew this game was going to be a track meet. We knew going in that we were gonna have to outscore Bama.

Gotta give Bama credit for how they defended today. I also think Carr not bringing his A-game made it a lot easier for Bama to sell out and guard the 3 point line. In most of our big wins, Carr being a legitimate interior presence offensively has been huge for us and also opens up the perimeter, and he gave us nothing today.

Alabama is better than us offensively. So unless we get better on defense and get to where we’re able to get key stops down the stretch when we need it, are we just supposed to be ok with going into the game knowing we can’t win?

I’m not disagreeing we need to be able to get stops. But Alabama is a volume shooting team. Offensively speaking, UK entered the game as the more efficient team. That works most of the time. But when you already know that you are weak defensively, and there is little at this point in the season that can be done about it, then you can’t rely on simply being efficient on offense to win a game like this. Bama won the game because of volume.

Teams know Pope and UK want to shoot lots of 3s. Bama is athletic enough to not let that happen. They were not going to let UK have open looks from 3.

It’s not complicated. Take away the three or at least make us work hard for it and we get a lot easier to beat. Amari is fine or whatever but his offense today wasn’t going to get it done. Ever. Butler, Oweh and Brea all had layups blocked by the rim. Again. Don’t is what it is. If we play to our strengths we’re hard as hell to beat. We play to our weaknesses and we are still pretty good but also beatable at the same time.

Pope mentioned a few games ago, that certain players are not totally bought into the system, and revert back to old habits... Add into the fact, that teams press up on our shooter, because they don't have the best handles, and won't beat you off the bounce... Once you you get into the head of JR, he is done... Brea tries real hard... But he just does not have the handles to do more than his little side step 3. We have seen flashes, when JR is on, and the opposing guards and small forwards are not pressing our shooters... Pope will have to get his type of player before we see what his system can do.. This season will be frustrating, because our margin of error is very slim, and greatly is determined by how JR plays.

Buddy, I'm gonna let you in on a secret. Opposing teams are very aware that he's a shooter. Thats the last person on the team they are leaving open, in fact they will give up help rotation to stay homd on him. In fact today he had two ppl on him as soon as he caught the ball several times today.

It's Pope's job to draw plays up for him. Period.

Exactly .. be more creative .. set harder screens , whatever it takes ,. in this game him getting 3 attempts is enough to lose the game .. I mean sand Bama are near equals .. did Sears have a hard time getting off 3s ?? Truth is Brea is a stand still shooter , a 1 trick pony so to speak , you get up in his jersey and whats he gonna do ? Does he put it on the floor and finish at the rim , or drive n dish NO .. he cant sadly . And Yes Carr passes up 3s . I think Lamont passes up some good ones .

yeah they are trying to guard KB tight tight tight , but its our job to get him looks . Today we failed sadly and badly .

When Brea is a non-factor, UK is just a completely different team.

Their problem also is they can’t get by anybody

I think this is where we miss Kerr. He puts pressure on more a quickly and is historically a formidable three point shooter. Just my $.02

The offense isn't really centered around "getting by anybody". It's designed to create opportunities for others, and create open looks. The team just doesn't do it consistently enough.

There are only so many levers we can pull. We only have 2 starters that are really consistent. Pope will get a stronger roster starting next year. I'm still enjoying this season immensely.

This game our offense created a fair amount of open three-point shot opportunities that our guys declined because they wanted something with a bigger time window. Against a team like Alabama you just have to suck it up and shoot those. To me that was the biggest single difference in this game.
