If you happened to tape this game(?), go back and watch UK's DL play. We constantly lined-up one yd. off the LOS. Was this by design by the coaching staff? The inability of our young LBs to establish and maintain "gap-responsibility" in the 2nd half cost us dearly! I understand that we were lacking three of our more capable def. players in this game however, is this going to be an ongoing problem for future games?

One nice thing about players lining up incorrectly or not maintaining gap integrity. Those are correctable errors. I can't imagine Eliot wanted his D-Lineman lining up a full yard off the LOS, so that's something that should be easy to correct.

My two biggest worries with the defense are four man pass rush and ability to defend the read option. Against Louisiana, Kentucky really struggled to put pressure on the QB. The read option is a thorn in most teams side (it's amazing that one fairly simple concept has dominated the sport like it has; hell, a lot of teams entire offense is built around that concept).

I think the return of Flannigan and Hatcher will help the run defense (at least some). Where does the pass rush come from though? Against ULL, UK had just five TFL. The Cajuns did a good job of playing "downhill". In the 2nd half, they were constantly in 2nd/3rd and short. When offenses can stay on schedule like that, the defense is in huge trouble. UK has to figure out a way to create more havoc behind the LOS.

GBB!!!

Cory Johnson is our best pass rushing DT. Hatcher is our best pass rusher. Flanigan is one of our best LB'ers. Those three would have helped tremendously against ULL and would have let the players who played become depth on a hot night rather than exhausted and confused first time players for our defense.

Personally, I wondered why we were lining off the line of scrimmage so far.... I know we have 3 guys out of the game yesterday that will help us seal the outside better, plus get a better rush on the QB..... I think a lot of young guys will learn a valuable lesson from the game..... This game was hyped big time, but our next game will be on the road at USC, so I don't know which game will take their attention the most.... If our young players learn from game one to game 2, we have a real shot at USC... They looked terrible, and I'm not sure Steve can fix what I seen on that field against Western Kentucky..... We are better than WKU and if we improve and take away the outside, they will have a long day, because I trust our DB's....
