Wynyard ’50-50′ on playing for the Cats this season

he should 100% join the cats if he can. and probably redshirt. keep working on conditioning, get better in practice. then next year be a contributor.

Probably be good for him to at the very least enroll for spring classes, so he can get used to college life, and get some practice time in w/ the team.
But if he doesn't, we're still good.

Before the big Aussie kid joined the team, this would been a very bad thing for team depth. Still like to see him enroll early, but if he doesn't, its not a depth killer like before.

I'm guessing there are multiple factors that will affect his decision, many of which are out of his hands...
1. How good will Labissiere and Humpries by mid-December?
2. How good will Poythress' surgically repaired knee look?
3. How effective will Lee be in his minutes?
3. Is Wynyard a likely NBA prospect for this year, next year, or further down the line?

If Labissiere and Humphries are handling the center spot well and have no limitations, it seems likely Wynyard will redshirt. If it is believed that the Cats still need help down low, he may not redshirt.
If Poythress' knee looks good and he's playing to his ability, Wynyard won't see the floor anyway. If Alex isn't fully back to 100%, Wynyard could provide some size and strength at power forward.
If Lee has taken a step forward, like most expect, he's going to be getting back-up minutes at both post positions, so Wynyard wouldn't be needed.
If Wynyard plans to try to go to the NBA sooner rather than later, he's likely to play. If he plans to wait at least until 2017 draft, he may redshirt.

I'm guessing Wynyard won't be needed this year. Let me put it this way... if UK needs Wynyard to play right away, it will mean that the Cats are having a poor season and some things have not gone well for our post players. Since I expect Poythress and Lee to play like upperclassmen and I expect Labissiere to get the lion's share at center with Humphries provided mop-up duty, I think Wynyard will redshirt.

For the record, there's zero doubt he's coming to UK.

The youngster says the decision is his and he's "50-50" on at this stage. "I think I could handle the level, but I probably won't decide until I get there. There are pluses and minuses both ways."

Whatever, Wynyard can't wait to get to America's most successful NBA feeder college. The Wildcats have had more top-10 picks, more lottery selections and more first-rounders in the John Calipari era than any other team in the country -- and that should continue with incoming freshman Skal Labissiere rated a prospective No 1 pick in 2016.

"I committed real, real early, pretty much as soon as they came to me. It's the best school in the country, so how was I not going to say yes. It's going to be a lot of fun.

"I'm ready to go over there and smash it out, and do the best I can to compete."

Wynyard is confident his time with the Breakers has him as ready as he can be. But he knows it's about to go to another level.

"Their facilities are amazing ... they have everything at Kentucky. And all those resources really help them develop their players... I'm not nervous, more sad to leave my family. That's going to be really hard."

I agree with this, I can think of a few other amazing benefits being a UK basketball player.

The title is a bit misleading. If you read the article, it is clear that he will arrive on campus in December.

The "50-50" decision is whether he will play or redshirt. Sounds like Cal is leaving up to him.

Based on the article he will definitely be on campus, though.

yeah, @preacher_tom was clearly going for the wow factor

Like to see the big fella this winter but unselfishly, maybe he waits until the summer. Less drama, more books, practice, girls with enough time left in the day.

The main thing is he'll be here in December, I thought he was 6-9 but that story has him at 6-10, that's even better, maybe he'll grow 2 more inches before next year, two seven footers from down under, imagine the possibilities[cheers]:cool2:

There's no reason to red-shirt.

Why do people always think these players are 4 year players.

He just needs to come in and practice his ass off. Also getting in game practice is also important. Sitting on a bench isn't going to help him develop as much as pretty in high intensity games.

A redshirt really depends on how good this kid is. If he's good enough to leave after a year or two, a redshirt or not, it really won't matter. If Cal thinks he's a 4 year player, a redshirt would be the best thing that could happen to his near basketball future. At least for this year, we are looking at him for contributing to our team depth.

Forget the RS. The way Cal recruits there will be no RS, unless the NBA rules change. Only way a RS happens is in case of injury.
