Wow. How Can You Not Like Wenyen?

The kid is not afraid of competition. 3rd PF to commit for next year. Any other PFs need not apply. (I could be off base on that) The Cal recruiting train keeps on steaming.
In actuality, that's probably part of the reason he came to UK. He wants to play the 3, and UK has no commitment at the position, and no one on the roster who's a natural 3. Cal could point to those other guys and say "they're the 4's and 5's, you're our 3".

Whether he actually spends a lot of time at the 3? We shall see. Cal's natural instinct has been to take bigger guys with some perimeter/wing elements in their game and force them to learn to play in the paint. That describes, to greater and lesser extents, Terrence Jones, Anthony Davis, Julius Randle, and Karl Towns. Even DeMarcus Cousins came out of HS with a rep for wanting, at times, to try to play like a small forward.

Gabriel's greatest assets right now are his length and athleticism. He's got a 7'1" wingspan (and that's despite weighing, at most, 210 lbs, so you know most of that is arms), and like with AD (or David Robinson, going way back), he seems to have lost none of his quickness and agility after having a big growth spurt (he went from being a 6'1 HS freshman to his current 6'10", and about 4 inches of that came in the last 2 years). He runs the floor like a guard, and he gets off the ground a lot, lot faster than most big guys. To me, that reads like a college 4, a rebounding, shot-blocking force.

Sounds like a great kid. I hope someone -- without violating any obscure NCAA rule -- can get him a Kentucky blue shirt to replace that purple one he has.

I figure Gabriel will split time between the 3 and 4, unless we sign another big.

Right now we have:

At the 5- Humphries, Killeya-Jones, and Wynyard.

At the 4- Killeya-Jones, Gabriel, and Wynyard.

At the 3- Gabriel, Matthews, and Mulder.

At the 2- Matthews, Mulder, and Hawkins.

At the 1- ?(Fox?)

I can not really see Ulis, Murray, or Briscoe coming back so we really need a PG. hopefully Fox commits soon.

No monk?

I absolutely love Wenyen Gabriel. I've wanted him at UK ever since I saw him in action this Summer, and was sick because I though he was Duke bound after hearing the stuff about him growing up a Duke fan.

Like Sacha Killeya-Jones, Wenyen has immense upside. It's like having two Willie Cauley-Steins (but potentially better) coming in next year.

Wenyen has a rep of having the best motor in AAU ball and he is an incredible rebounder. The fact that he is a great student and a great kid is just a bonus. You've got to love the quality of young men that Cal is bringing into the program - and the great thing is that great kids draw in other great kids.

Ways to not like him. Be a little brothel fan. Be a crown royal drinker. Like/wear line beards (some of these are clearly redundant). Be afraid the dumpster fire in crapville will produce another gap in ncaa titles that will last til Chelsea Clinton runs for orifice(spelling intended).

You might be colorblind, don't panic though, many colorblind people live normal, productive lives.

Coach Cal said from day one he was gona bring in good kids, good team mates. In his early interviews he said a lot of times when he knows a kid has talent then all he will watch is how he interacts with his coaches and team mates on the floor and on the bench.

Even players who came with an edge about them, those kids still had good hearts and were good kids. They all leave as mature young men but kids at heart.
