It’s real . He said that he is done chasing the NBA. He just wants to play basketball because he loves the game . He said it on some podcast I can’t remember which one though .

Given the state of NIL these days, I wonder if there is anything stopping someone like Cousins from reenrolling in school and playing college basketball again? I suspect someone is going to try this soon...
He's "only" 34 and technically healthy but he's had some tough injuries that are incredibly hard come back from. He fully ruptured his achilles and at his size he's lucky it wasn't a career killer right then and there.
