Those of you...cough..cutnets...cough....saying Willis wont start next yr., better get a grip on reality.
Willis is the 3rd best player on this team right now.
NBA scouts are drooling...
Look at the size of his hands...they look like catchers mitts.
All he was lacking was confidence and PT...now he has both.
KU better lace em up tight Sat. Cause UK is coming in there to beat their ass.

I agree with everything almost. Nobody has taken up for Willis the last two weeks then I have. I feel like I should be on the bench next to Cal giving him pointers.[eyeroll]



But Willis ain't starting next year. Have a good one.

If Willis is the 6 th man next years it will be great for him. But no way he is starting.

I just hope he continues to start the rest of this year. And I hope he plays decent at Kansas.
 
If Willis continues to improve and play like he is, he will start next year. Not saying he will start every game but he is proving himself more than worthy of a starting spot.

Why are ppl so obsessed with willis threads? He played well....not the first player in UK'S history to do so. I'm guessing they're from the same ppl who made threads about him when they wanted him to play just because, before Cal forced him to earn it and what's made him the player he is now? The same..he needs more time threads...even though it's pretty evident pulling him out earlier was teaching him what it tskes.

Definitely this game will tell us how we will react in hostile environments in future games. If we hang tough and play our game it's a win win no matter what the scoreboard says. This team is growing up right in front of our eyes.
 
Add me to the list that says Willis for sure will NOT start next year...no way... we have no one to put in this year..won't be the case next year...

He played a hell of a game. I came off the couch on that coast to coast dunk! Don't understand some folks resenting his success. Probably the same ones that didn't think he could play to begin with. ALL he needed was confidence and playing time.

He's a Pro!! Just needed the confidence!! Best big on this team right now, and there's nobody I'd rather see shoot the ball!!
 
So happy for the kid, and I'm really looking forward to what he can bring for next year's squad. A consistent three point shooter, a guy who gets tough rebounds, and some veteran presence after lacking confidence early in his career--sure sounds familiar.

He could add a Darius Miller type presence for sure. Totally different players but we know what Miller did for that 2012 team. Willis could have a similar impact.

I guess a reverse question why are some fans like you upset over the Willis threads? Is it wrong to enjoy a player's success? No one is saying that he is a lottery pick but to keep harping about the threads on him is silly.

Ditto.

I'm hardly president of the Willis fan club, and we both know some people around here get totally ridiculous about him, but he should be an enormous asset next year. UK's mondo recruiting class doesn't really include any wing players who are perimeter threats (I'd count Monk as a pure guard, not really a wing). You have a a Willis who finishes out this season strong, and suddenly you have a versatile option who can play with any other 2 frontcourt players, or as a 4 in smaller lineups.

A lineup of Fox, Monk, Willis, Gabriel, and Adebayo is drool-worthy. But even if that doesn't happen, the fact that UK can put another shooter on the floor, in the form of a 6'9" guy who is suddenly a rebounding beast, and playing decent defense, could vault UK from great potential to great reality.

Thanks for asking this question, Poetax. The emergence of Willis has given new life to this team. If Skal follows his example on rebounds and defense, UK will be a very tough out for anyone.
 
Said this in another thread, will say it again here.
Willis has played great - excellent, even - and I'm tickled for him AND for us. But, please, look at who we've played the last four games. Let's see if he can maintain this type of play against KU (not necessarily a double double, but the decent defense and rebounding - plus hit a couple-three shots) before we discuss him possibly being a starter next year.
This is not bashing Willis in any way, shape or form - it's being cautiously optimistic. I would love nothing more than Derek to be the man to lead us to another FF - just not prepared to say he can be the one to do it.......YET

lol, people crack me up. Willis deserves every single post and all the attention he's getting now. He's putting in the the effort so he deserves the rewards. Just because you were wrong doesn't mean you have to keep bashing him. Suck it up, and be happy for him.

Thanks for letting us know he won't be starting next year. Lol. Best big on this team right now, best shooter too. I'd take his play right now over any unknown Freshman. Just have to see!

Some people just have a thing for home grown kids that can earn time on the floor and help the team look good and win while proving their ability to compete and perform well, rebound, and shoot the damn basketball really effing good. For some, that last part is their favorite part. I'm one of them. Hate me.

It's no guarantee that our great incoming class will all excel next year. The example is Skal! I still believe it takes some experience and maturity to be the best in college basketball. Maybe Willis will be the Darius Miller next year? Why in the hell do Kentucky fans want to root against a Kentucky player and Kentucky kid when he is playing exceptional. I don't understand why you can kick a player when he isn't playing well, but you don't give the player credit when the they are playing well. I think most fans thinks this game is easy at this level. I think most on here have no idea what it takes to be a player at Kentucky!

Honestly and sadly I selfishly hope he doesn't leave after this year. Same with Ulis. Ulis Fox Monk Gabriel Bam with Willis and SKJ coming off the bench would be a very solid top 7 player lineup
 
I could see Willis starting.

I think Adebayo, Monk, Fox, Gabriel are likely to start but that still leaves room for a 3, a stretch 4 or a 5 depending on where Cal wants to play Gabriel and Bam. Willis could play 2 of those roles IMO.
 
That said if Willis continues to play the way he has been he may end up in a strike while the iron is hot situation.
