Seems like it attracted the students and livened up the ball park? I bet the players loved it.

Wouldn’t be expensive to install. Probably could get a corporate sponsor.
I remember a volunteer telling me how the students cleaned up afterward and were generally well behaved and had a lot of fun.

I’ve said it more than once, KPP is a beautiful park. But it’s severely lacking in atmosphere.

I've got a growing dislike of KPP. Feel like it already looks bad or cheap in some ways and never had atmosphere.

They built a cheap minor league park instead of a great college park. Again, putting big money before true fans.

All that said, apparently the students are trying to organically grow a student section behind the visitor bullpen and call it The Hook. It'll take a lot.

You know what KPP reminds me of? James Patterson Stadium at Louisville. I think you described it best. It’s a minor league park for a college program. At least the facade at James Patterson is nice.

I mean, I'm happy that we got a facility upgrade, but it just seems like we could have done so much better than what we ended up getting.

Not a fan of the concrete seating area on the sides. Park is nice as a whole, but 50 mil could have done more imo. Students and atmosphere there is lacking to say the least.

The only major quibble I have with the stadium is the rock seating. There are exactly zero people who want to sit on rocks with their legs dangling in front of them for four hours.

They should have made the entire rock section chairback seating or at the very least had that area as bleacher seating.

100% agree on the rock seating. One of the worst ideas.

Would Matt May at UK be the guy to help those students get the deck?
Matt- are you out there? Help!

I don't even see how it would really be feasible with the way that KPP is set up. At KPP the field is sunken and there is essentially a walkway all the way around the park. So, it is fully enclosed. No where to put a deck unless you build it up off the sidewalk. The students could just stand around the outfield railing, which is what they somewhat do now. They are doing this behind the opponent's bullpen mostly and have commandeered the name, 'The Hook,' as the moniker for this. As far as I can tell, the draw is pretty small and the atmosphere isn't there for a lot of reasons.

One of those reasons being that fans cannot buy alcohol nor can they freely bring it into the park. So, one way to possibly 'fix,' this and make it a better atmosphere for that sort of party feel would be to block off a section in right field that is only accessible through a gate out there. Cannot get into the grand stand area.

I highly doubt that UK ever does this.

Before I can really critique the stadium, I need to get over there and check it out. Looking at the pictures and the games I've seen on TV, I'm so so on it. I'm not a big fan of complete "plastic turf" but I'm Old School.

'The Hook' is an area near the opponent's bullpen, dedicated to former UK pitcher Jonathan Hooker who tragically lost his life in the crash of flight 5191 in 2006. I've seen a couple of games where some students have congregated there. Alcohol was a big contributor to The Cliff's atmosphere. And music blaring from the Tailgaters. It certainly is needed at KPP but it will be hard to duplicate.

Yep. I thought the hook was the name of the opponent's bullpen, to play on the double meaning of it being dedicated to former UK pitcher Hooker, but also that hook means a short leash. Now the makeshift student section has taken on the same moniker. Which is cool too

Yeah. I never thought of the double meaning but I'd bet you're right.

100% agree, but that can be fixed when ticket demand is there
