playing. Been very limited lately. I thought early in the year this kid could really contribute. Skal has been inconsistant so I figured he might get a little more PT.

Multi-year player who only get better as he gets older. (He's only 17)

The game against EKU was not a game to play him in, the game speed was simply too fast for a guy like him, IMHO.

He got 27 minutes against UCLA. Clearly, he's got a defined role and defined type of game Cal plays him in. I'm okay with it...he's a 17-year old Freshman.

Against Duke, UCLA, and USF who all had big bruiser types he played 12, 27, and 11 minutes. In our other games against smaller, quicker teams he has played 6 minutes, 7 minutes, and no appearance in the rest. Should be obvious to anyone with the tiniest bit of basketball knowledge what's going on.

Maybe the rest of us just aren't as smart as you.......

You can't question anything Cal does or you get blasted on here...accept this as fact when you post

I do wish people would be a tad more gracious when someone ask an X and O type question or just brings up any thing different than we are currently doing for discussion that the poster doesnt get slammed , get labeled as a troll etc etc . This is a discussion board with 1000's of people , opinions will vary , no need to get nasty about it .
just a random example from the past but a guy ask " why dont we play more zone " and sure as death and taxes someone will say " so you know more than Cal ? " its a opinion board , share them freely .

This^. Well stated. Shame that there are a handful of self proclaimed genuies here on the board with no respect for opinions other than there own.

Bravo Sir! Very well stated. The old folks had an expression for it. To disagree without being disagreeable.

But this question (& the Willis one) gets asked and answered after every game one or the other doesn't play a lot.

Every time this question is asked, I give the same (correct) answer. It is all about matchups. A quick, spread-you-out team is not a good matchup for Humphries. Now Duke spreads you out, but they had the 1 big banger, so when he was in the game, Humphries had a reason to play.

Likewise matchups dictate when Willis is likely to play more.
For Hawkins it is situations.

people like you are killing this board.

Maybe his last line wasn't nicely worded, but he's absolutely right. There's a clear pattern and to those paying attention it should seem rather obvious the reason Cal plays Hump in some games but not others.

In games where we face a big hulking true center, where he can do his defending by banging down low, Humphries gets a lot of minutes, in part because Skal seems to really have trouble banging with those guys (remember how Skal gotten eaten up by Plumlee and Welsh?). But Hump does not play in games where we face teams with a perimeter-oriented small ball type offense where he'd be forced to defend on the perimeter.

to get back on topic its hard to give DW a ton more minutes . yes he helps with shooting but Derek isnt exactly strokin' it right now . And on a team that is getting bullied on the boards and not playing solid D you add him into the lineup we get weaker on D and on the glass . Kid looks like he improved his body but still seems shy to hold his ground in the paint . But we need that jumper and need it bad .

I know all of that, hell 99% of fans everywhere knows it, but there is no sense in being an ass, and this place is full of them.

I disagree that Humphries can't get in a game against EKU because of speed of play. It looks more like Cal has to play Skal more to try to teach him how to actually play a man's game.

There are going to be many games that Humphries plays little or none. He can't guard on the perimeter. Hopefully he will get quicker with maturity.

He can't guard little teams that spread you out.
Yep, this is the answer. EKU was not a good game for him. UCLA had a couple guys he could guard but EKU spread the floor and everyone could handle and shoot the ball. Humphries will get his chances when needed against a team with a more traditional post presence.

Did you all know Humphries is 17?
I heard about that. I maybe wrong but it looks like Adam sandler wears a UK shirt in that movie funny people. Unless we play Syracuse, a tubby team, or the big 10 Humphries won't play a ton. Same can be said for the lumberjack. When he plays, if he doesn't have Atleast 15/10 prepare for a meltdown of epic proportions

WCS played wide reciever in high school.

Don't quote me on this but I have good inside info that Tyler ulis takes the elevator, probably because he's lazy, Karl towns walks too slow, and we have too many premadonnas on this team

No there's a reason to it. Accept the fact that every time you think someone should play because of a layup you saw them hit on a playground there's a reason they arent.

Jonathan, my guess is that some of these questions are posed by folks that don't spend most of their free time on this board. Therefore, they wouldn't know this question was previously discussed. I don't have a problem with it. Concerning Humphries, I just assumed that he was still recovering from a foot injury. Apparently, that wasn't the reason he did not play against EKU. I've attended several EKU games this year and was curious as to how they would defend him with his bulk.

Wanna know why you get blasted so much? Simply put, you're not a very good poster
You're a race baiter among other things. It would also behoove you to stop touting yourself as an ex-coach. Judging by your irrational takes on x's & o's, one would surmise you had a losing record.

Humphries' didn't play receiver in high school but he did play piano. “Growing up, I was really into high-performing arts. I was a singer for a really long time. Still am, really. Humphries also said he was a part of productions like Oliver and The King and I.

Just like Josh H, Derek Willis, & Kyle Wiltjer, Cal dissed Josh until he no other choice.

From QA with Coach Cal, it sounds like Coach Cal is basically saying they have to keep working on Skal.

Which is true, Skal has to keep playing. He has shown good offensive skill, but if his other aspect of the game doesn't come around there's no chance for Final Four.

The question's already been answered so I'll give my input. Wynyard's gonna be better. And will probably take Humphries minutes by SEC play. Wynyard looks skilled.

I think Wynyard is a bit more polished and alot more athletic than Humphries is at the moment but then again, Humphries looked alot more polished on tape as well. So obviously, that's just by going by what I have seen of him. Playing in college ball is a completely different animal and most guys take a bit of time adjusting to the college game. Some more than others but I'm not expecting too much from Tai, not this season anyway. He will be so far behind that I'm not sure we should expect much at all from him. Hopefully he is a workaholic and comes in and busts his ass everyday to catch up. I'm sure Cal has had him or someone with him working on the offense to familiarize him with what we run here, at least as much as possible from half a world away.
Although I'm not expecting much, I do think that he will contribute in a month or so. I hope the kid has a fearless attitude and just loves to fight from the opening jump. That would just bring so much to this team if he could come in and just add that mentality. He is an interesting player with and unorthodox plan of planning college ball but I do think he can eventually benefit this team alot, I'm just not putting expectations on him to do it.

Reminds me of a story.

Man gets on elevator every morning on the 15th floor and goes to the lobby. At night he comes back and takes the elevator to the 12th floor, gets off, and takes the stairs the rest of the way? Why?
