Why Is The QB Position So Sacrosanct?

How long would a Olineman who constantly blows blocking assignments or a DB who can't cover Betty White stay in the game?

Guess its scary to make a change...I think its more exciting than scary though...and look at this past weekend, Ohio State and Alabama both made QB changes mid game.

Sacrosanct! Somebody did well on the SAT. I love it.
Had to Google that to figure out WTH he was talking about. Well done, OP.

Seriously, though: I think it has to do with how much mental prep goes into being a QB. I think it's much more difficult for a young player to come in and play QB than it is for a young player to come in a play a position like CB.

Well, our tackles go beat pretty consistently all night, and they stayed in the game. I have nothing against Drew. I wish he would have gotten some reps in our first game. I also trust our coaches to play the person who gives us the best chance to win. would love to see Drew get a few series this Saturday, and quite a few next week. I think it's good for the back up to get meaningful snaps. He's only one play away from being our starter.

I haven't seen Towles blow any blocking assignments yet, and a hell of a stop on that five star DB.

And don't sell Betty White short, she might have some excellent moves in the bedroom, not that I would know.

Well fans understanding the game would be one reason. And what all is involved in each position, especially a skilled one. But if you had a dB who couldn't cover but you knew your back up couldn't cover as well and you knew it...would you still have to waste your time to prove it to the ppl who didn't know what they were talking about?

Actually the OTs were subbed from time to time vs UF. Meadows subbed at both tackle spots and was beaten for a sack. Mosier subbed at RT and had a false start. Haynes subbed in at RG.

As for DB, look at Tiller. Previous 2 year starter despite being beaten on a regular basis by numerous SEC WRs. Now a senior, he lost his job to true fr Westry and has pretty much been relegated to STs only. Coaches have shown they'll make changes when they have someone to go to.

And if it burps in your stomach it proves you should have listened to your mother, chew your food.

On other fronts, looks like the coaches are still runnngg the team, I hope it continues.

Not true Meadows played in this game.

I think its because the QB is almost always the face of the team. In a game where the players wear helmets shielding their face, the QB is the ONE player even a casual fan recognizes on the street.

If the casual fan was standing next to players like Dorian Baker, Chris Westry, or AJ Stamps, theyd never even know it. Its just the nature of the sport.

I would say that it depends greatly on how much faith you have that the next guy will be any better. Look at last year when Jordan Swindle routinely was called for false starts...didn't see anyone replacing him, did we?
Couple of years ago we would switch between Smith and Whitlow...and Towles. Hartline and Cobb would share QB duties...

It's amazing how fan opinions can turn on the outcome of 1 or 2 plays in a game.

Not sure why every football fan does not know the answer to this question...

Who are the highest paid players in the NFL?

17 out of the top 20 are QB's (2 tied) This list does not even include Brady.

Jay Cutler signed for $126M???

Andy Dalton $115M

QB is the most important position in any sport according to multiple articles with collaborating experts.

In fact, the only media outlet that has disputed this was Bleacher Report...

Good post OP. I have wondered that also. Why was Barker recruited if Stoops didn't think he could beat out Patrick? Let's see how this next game goes. Six quarters without a TD is pretty ridiculous..Hope this is an aberration. I was hoping we would get Lincoln Riley or Sonny Cumbie as OC.. I see Dawson as not experienced enough. Sure hope he proves me wrong.

To me the QB isn't above criticism.

However:
1. I am not a member of the coaching staff. I don't see every practice. And so when they consistently choose Towles......and 2 different OCs choose Towles.....I'm inclined to think they know more than me.

2. I know enough about football to know that our offensive woes goes beyond the QB position. Sure, Towles has not played well, but there's plenty of blame to go around. I know enough to know that unless the o-line and WRs improve, trotting out a Freshman who has never played before is "not likely" going to be an improvement. It's a scary thought but Towles may just be the best option we have right now.

I'm sure Towles looks phenomenal when he doesn't have to worry about pressure in practice(actually I'm being cynical. I've seen practices and Towles looks eerily similar to his Florida Towles' self. Go figure)

There is something internal as to why Barker doesn't get the nod. Whether it's because his EKU/BB Gun incident or because of some juvenile precedent that Towles started last year therefore he gets the nod this year...idk, but the better Quarterback when I watched practice was clearly...clearly, not Towles.

The practices I watched; Towles was clearly the best. But I can't let that cloud my judgement because I couldn't watch all practices.

The staff isn't dumb. They're gonna play whomever gives them the best chance to win now. Winning now gets recruits. Recruits get more wins. More wins secures your job. If that's Towles then great. If that's Barker then great. Doesn't change the fact that we don't have input on the decision.

I haven't read your post or the thread, I just opened the thread to applaud your nice word usage.

i know that a&m took their 5* qb out of the game to play a freshman for a quarter because the starter was struggling and when they put him back in he played wayyyyy better. i dont think you have to ruin a kids confidence to play the other guy a couple series. seems like maybe watching the game a bit can maybe show you something that you cant see in the heat of the moment. pat has all kinds of confidence so i think it would be easy to sit him down and explain that the O is struggling and we need to try to jump start it so we are gonna give drew a series or 2 and then sell him on watching the plays develop and try to improve his pocket awareness.

it doesn't have to be the death nail that everyone says it is.

I mean, if you truly don't understand the difference between playing QB effectively and OT or DB effectively, I don't know what to tell you.

Are you serious?

He was recruited to be the next QB. He was also, not incidentally, given the opportunity to beat Towles out this season. He did not do so. Good grief.
