Why Has UK Not Offered Dennis Smith? (Update: UK Offers Smith on 7/14/15)

Why offer someone you have no chance with when you have other equal more viable options? Kid isn't leaving NC. Simmons is just as good.

They've pretty much put all their eggs in one basket with Simmons since Thornton reclassified.

Smith isn't going to Duke. He'll end up at NC State. Frank Jackson will end up at Duke and he is almost as good. Has been having a great Summer.

I hope Giles picks NC State with Smith.

I get the allure of playing for K, but elite kids who weren't connected to congressman were once considered square if they picked Duke. Now, they see it as a badge of honor. Just one of those things we'll have to endure for four or five more seasons until K rots away and attempts to do something else with his life. On my last point, I'm not sure K can do anything else with his life. Basketball is all he knows.

We were the first school to offer Tatum if I'm not mistaken and if Giles wants to come with him we will take him. So many of you all are so ready to give Duke every recruit it amazes me. i really like Dennis Smith but Cal's methods of recruiting are different than other coaches..He is willing to take a lesser player if several other circumstances play into the recruiting.

I like Smith more than Simmons.
He has all the skills and is a great athlete.
Smith is easily the number on PG in the class.
If Simmons were to add some good weight, he could get close to Smith.

I love the pic of Cal and John Wall on the sidelines watching Smith play. I would think that has to go a long way with a kid. Cal's like....look what I did for this other NC kid. You could be next! Crystal Ball (which means nothing...but still) has NC State and Florida as his leaders. No way an elite kid not in the 2015 class picks NC State over UK.

It's possible. See Malik Newman, Stephen Zimmerman and Jaylen Brown as examples of kids making similar decisions.

This is great news. Hopefully we get in good shape with him . Dennis Smith Jr. is going to be a superstar. I'll take him over Simmons any day of the week. Hopefully Thornton comes back for his sophomore year at Duke!

Glad to hear he's been offered. Cal has my complete confidence on the recruiting front!

It never hurts to muddy the waters a bit for the competition, even if the Cat's odds aren't great. How could he not at least listen to the winningest program of all time? Having three #1 draft selections in the last 6 seasons probably doesn't hurt either.

I hope this doesn't hurt UK's chances or imply anything about the status of Simmons (even though he's struggling to find his stroke). Cal has proven the two could exist together. So it shouldn't IMHO.

Glad to see Cal reached out to Dennis. I wonder if UK has a legit chance to add him for next year's roster. I also wonder if this means anything for the recruitment of Kobi Simmions.

It basically puts pressure on Simmons. He has an offer, he can commit to Kentucky today if he wanted to. He could force UK's hand, for lack of better wording, by saying "Hey, I'm going to be your PG next season". I imagine that forces Smith away. And is that such a bad thing? Might not get the best PG, but ensure that we have a top3. At the very least Cal is making sure his bases are covered.

I'm always a pro-player type of guy. But the last few years recruits have been using schools, mainly Kentucky, to garner attention, sometimes attention from the school they really want. Which is fine. But Kentucky should also start broadening their offer sheet a bit. This is still a business. Offer the top3 guards. If a recruit wants to play the waiting game, so be it, but your spot may be gone.

I always say recruits need to watch out for themselves first and the school second. But the reverse is true. I'm glad Cal and Kentucky are, on the surface at least, reaching out to more players. I don't think you see Cal get left out to dry again anytime soon. He's making sure he gets a top guard and if that means putting out offers to the entire lot of them, putting some pressure on them, so be it. They'll have to deal. Or pull the trigger. Which is exactly what Cal wants.

I doubt the ridiculousness that we saw in the 2015 will ever be repeated. It just happened that the year of our mass exodus coincided with an incoming class littered with guys who are afraid of the bright lights. I think 2015 will end up being a blessing in disguise. It made Cal step his game up and start going after kids a little earlier.

I'd have to agree. It definitely made Cal re-think his strategies before the blue bloods adapted and it was too late. I do think a class similar to 2015 is possible again in the future. 2012 was very similar with about 8 of the top 25 going to programs I wouldn't consider "elite". Weird. Seems to always fall in line with a monster UK season. Maybe Cal doesn't hit the recruiting trail as hard during those successful seasons.......

I hate Duke as much or than anyone but come on. K graduated from West Point. He knows quite a bit more than you are giving him credit for.

Yea b/c that did not happen this year at all.

Newman, Brown, Zimmerman

All went to schools with a worse program than NC ST.

So since NC ST has all these guys locked up Cal might as,well ho home. GIVE ME A BREAK WE HAVE CAL AND WE ARE KENTUCKY WE CAN STEAL A KID FROM NC ST I DON'T CARE IF HE IS SO CALLED LOCKED UP.

There is a reason Duke and UNC aren't recruiting these two in their own backyard.
