Why Do People Put Ketchup And Mustard In The Fridge?

You think so or is that just how you’ve always felt? I mean, no restaurant is putting their condiments away no matter how long they have them.

A bottle of ketchup in a restaurant might last a couple days after opening. A bottle of ketchup at my house probably lasts 6 months after opening.

They don’t have a seal on them though, unless the top is airtight I don’t see how it would matter. They keep pallets of them in a non air conditioned storage area and it’s 90 out.

At cold temperatures, volatile aromatics evaporate more slowly and oxidation happens more slowly. So it will keep its flavor better cold, if you're keeping it for months cold vs warm.

Both my ketchup and mustard have printed on their labels "for best results, refrigerate after opening". I like best results.
Yep.

You know I honestly didn't know that. I always keep mustard in the fridge but usually keep the ketchup out. Maybe that's why I have to drain the water out of the ketchup every time I use it.

... SO, it's a Big Fridge conspiracy... Heinz is in bed with the Freon folks.

BTW- Hunts ownz Heinz. Real sugar (Hunts removed HFCS 11 years ago) and natural blanching using cold water as opposed to HFCS and Lye. I try to only put the red sugar paste on hotdogs and sometimes fries.

I agree that ketchup made with sugar is superior to those made with corn syrup. Hunts is my go to.

Keep it up & you may find yourself with a Darwin Award.

Now that the main question is out of the way.. let's get after it.

Ketchup people are weird and the only thing it really belongs on, by itself, is fries. It's also worse for you.

Mustard by a country mile.

Kraft merged with Heinz in 2015 and Hunts has been owned by Conagra Brands since 1990. How you do figure Hunts owns Heinz?

What? You're the weird one. Ketchup goes on any burger and hotdog more than any other condiment. I see people putting it on eggs all the time now. There is nothing about ketchup that is bad for you either. Mustard is more of side you don't use unless you have ketchup to go with it unless you're eating a bologna sandwich.

Yeah, maybe when you're a child. Mustard is for those with articulate taste buds. Sure, anyone can slather sugary tomato paste on something.. "look at me, mommy, I can eat french fries now!".

Bleh.

Mustard IS better for you, zero calories or sugar. It belongs on hotdogs.. it goes with onions/meat sauce or kraut.

It also has much better variations.. Spicy mustard, Dijon, honey mustard.

It's the people's champ.

I could have taken you serious if you had brought up Grey Poupon and wanted to act arrogant but French's yellow mustard is high society?? [laughing]

That's the kind of crap that is in the fridge so long that you end up throwing it away because you forgot how long you've had it and the bottle is still 1/4 full.

Just comparing simple mustard to simple ketchup.

Yellow mustard is simple, but it works. Would I prefer Spicy Mustard? Beer mustard? Absolutely. And thats why mustard wins again: variation.
