Why do people play slot machines?

Louisvillians and others put $1 billion into the machines at Derby City Gaming in its first year of operation.

Churchill Downs will up the ante in 2021 when it adds another 1,000 slot-like racing machines – along with a hotel – to its historic Louisville racetrack on Central Avenue.

I do not understand the attraction for slots. There is no chance to come out ahead over the long haul and there is no entertainment value. What is it that entices people to play?

Why do people put money in the stock market? Why do people wager on sporting events? Why do people play poker?

My mom enjoys playing them. I don't play them very much myself. I prefer to hit up the blackjack tables over them. Unfortunately you have to drive to Indiana to be able to do that. The state lost so much money by not allowing the casino to be built on this side of the river.

I was in San Juan, Puerto Rico about 30 years ago and an old lady who looked to be mid 80's to 90 was playing slots. I walked by her about 6 or 7 times that day and I saw a man who worked in the casino and ask him how long had she been there. He said she had checked in the hotel about 30 hours and had not taken a break other than a bathroom break. His staff was taking drinks to her. He also said she was way behind in her losses.

I have no idea what she was thinking about. I guess she thought her days on earth were numbered so she did not give a hoot
 
Its a combination of the lights, bells, and whistles that are a staple of every one armed bandit along with the thought of instant gratification. Keep in mind that the very high majority of those playing the slots don't understand how to play any of the card games, especially craps and BJ which have considerably higher odds for tbe player than do slots. It takes no skill to sit there, feed the machine, pull the lever, and hope for a quick payout over and over again. Its for the rubes, which shpuld be obvious with one look.

I find $5 tables at Caesers Southern Indiana every time I go. Just have to check every floor. I don't know what it will be like once the casino is finished being moved from the boat to the hotel.

I like them well enough, especially the interactive types like Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Top Dollar. I'll usually sit along with the Wife and play a bit while she plays hers.

The new one opened the other day. The boat is no more.

yep they have those video black jack tables too. Those were $5 last time I was there
 
IDK about any slot machines, but I'd be lying if I said my wife and I haven't dropped serious coin in a couple hours on this damned thing... several times.

We have like 80,000 credits or something ridiculous now. Just half a mil more to go and we can have that Nintendo Switch for twice the retail cost.

Anybody need a compass ring or some plastic teeth?

For me, the difference is that there's some element of skill to stocks, poker, and sports gambling. A monkey can pull a lever and have the same odds as me. Not to mention there's no way to tell if that slot machine is legit. That thing is designed to make money, not lose it. I'll never trust that a casino computer is giving me a fair shake.

Wife and i take $20 each. We play the slots til the moneys gone. Usually takes hours. How long does that $20 a hand poker game last?
 
I am not a slot player, but I went to a slot tournament once. You literally stand around and hit the spin button over and over again, as fast as you can, for the allotted time. You get points for the good combinations. Sounds dumb. You know what? It’s awesome.

When I did occasionally play the slots I would stop immediately when I got up to like $40-$50 with a start of $20. I would cash it out and put that away. Then put another $20 in a different machine and try and do the same thing. When I cashed all of the winners in at the end, I usually left with more than what I started with. That's mostly from when I take my mom to the Derby City Gaming place that doesn't have card tables.

To me this is the only reason to ever play the slots. I get the fact that it’s cheap entertainment, if you stick to your “20.00 allowance”. It’s the people that sit there all day, hoping to strike it rich one .25 at a time, spending god knows what.

BS. While there is "risk" in all three, at least in the short run, investing in the long run in the stock market has made hundreds of thousands of Americans into millionaires, and some into billionaires. Can't say that about many slot machines or NFL parlay cards.
