Why did Mulder go Juco?

Lack of exposure mainly. He improved his game alot at Vincennes too. It had nothing at all to do with grades.

Thanks. I was just watching the video my brother did on coachcal.com and he seemed intelligent. Just checking. Thanks.

I feel like we got really lucky with Mulder, you don't see guys like him come out of JUCO very often. Many of those guys have delusions that they are somebody they are not, see Chris Jones. Jones is every bit as talented as Mulder, but didnt have a good head on his shoulders, only cared about himself, and just wasn't a smart individual. That pretty much describes your typical JUCO All American, Mulder is a very rare breed. Easy to see why he wasn't appreciated at his Louisville visit, he's just not their type.

Mulder had the talent and athleticism to dominate JUCO competition (statistics wise), but he valued being a great teammate and leader above all else, he sacrificed for his team even at that level, where most guys in his situation would be looking to "get theirs" to get noticed by high level D1 programs. This isn't a guy Coach Cal took a flyer on, he doesn't take risks like that. This was a calculated move to bring in a guy that can contribute, offer leadership and experience, but at the same time he will be comfortable in the background role behind our 5 star freshmen.

I liked/like his attitude for sure. Seems like a hell of a teammate. So excited for this year. Football first, I need UK sports in my life. Not much longer.

What you said about Cal's plan^^^

Sounds perfect. The less ego involved... the quicker this team comes together.

Exactly. It just doesn't seem possible that Mulder could do anything but help this team. It would still be a great team without him, but you throw in a somewhat experienced, mature, non-ego guy with his tools (athleticism, hustle, and shooting), its an even more valuable addition than it may appear to an outsider. If you've heard the way UL fans talk about Mulder, you would think he was a Twany Beckham type (that is by no means a knock on Beckham as a person, I've heard he was a good guy and good teammate, he just wasn't an in game contributor for UK)

What happened on his visit to UL?

I'm sure the visit went well, I'd say it's pretty rare for a visit to go bad for a player. It was just that after Mulder committed to UK, there was a predictable reaction from UL fans. Of course, they didn't want him because he was apparently less than impressive in pick up games on his visit. I dont question the validity of their statements, because there is no validity to any of those statements, it was all made up. Any time a player considers Louisville and goes elsewhere he either wasn't very good anyway, wasn't a Louisville man, or Pitino pulled his offer. They are a very predictable and jealous bunch. They make stuff up out of thin air and state it as fact to make themselves feel better. Their egos are teflon because they constantly lie themselves. Just look at how easily they convince themselves they are better than UK every single year without fail, then lose to us every time with only one exception during the Cal era.

I wish you'd tell me how you feel about Lewisville. Are you trolling?

I predict he will get D. Hawkins type minutes.

If we start all 3 of Ulis, Briscoe, and Murray, which looks likely, then our reserves at the guard/wing spots are Mulder, Hawkins, Matthews, and Willis. If you see Mulder getting Hawkins minutes (and I'm assuming that you meant he and Hawkins get spot minutes, not getting in a lot of games), then you must be seeing both of Matthews and Willis getting 10-15 minutes a game.

Yes. Matthews and Willis will be getting the 4th and 5th most minutes in the rotation. It is RARE these days for JUCOs to make an impact at high division one programs. Mulder was insurance in the event you didn't get Murray. Now that you have, he'll probably be a practice player.

This is just stupid. I'd bet my life savings Mulder plays more than Willis, who is not even a guard or a 2/3 guy really. He is going to play the 4 with whatever minutes he does get.

I'm not willing to bet my life on it, but you're just flat wrong if you think Willis will play more than Mulder. Dude straight up made an assumption based on results of past JUCO players. Mulder is not your typical JUCO guy, but this guy doesn't know anything about Mulder past that label. He saw "JUCO" and that was all he needed to know. No player analysis involved whatsoever, it was simply, JUCO= won't be able to compete at this level. Really quality post from "nooneputsbaby", I don't know what this board would've done without that contribution.

Can Noone be put in some sort of message board corner where his propensity for awful posts can be sequestered for a period of time equal to forever?

Like a ban for just being terrible?

Yeah, I agree. And I said my life's savings, not my life lol but why not raise the stakes! I am that confident Mulder will play more than Willis. And for all the bad stuff people say about Jucos Dodson was not terrible his one year here for a bench player. That is what Mulder will asked to be, and I expect Mulder will shoot better than Dodson. We shall see.

What analysis do you want. The level of competition at the JUCO level is not what it used to be say 10-15 years ago.

Dominating at the JUCO level does not necessarily translate to when you step up to the high division 1 level. I didn't say it cannot be done, but the impact players coming out of the JUCO ranks is pretty rare. At a Kentucky where the talent is among the best in Div. 1, these JUCO players don't really impact the rotation very often.

Whatever the reason I feel like we lucked out by getting the kid. I love the fact the kid is a deadeye shooter and can jump out of the gym. With shooters, its usually one or the other skillset. It's very rare you find a kid with both. I also like the fact he knows his role on the team from the get go. He seems to understand how much talent we have on the team and won't try to play hero ball. He seems to want to lead. With as many young players on the team, that is something that could turn out to be huge for us. Regardless of what ul fans say about the kid, the moment Cal offered, I have been sold on the kid being a major player for us. He will most likely come off the bench and be more of a supporting player and I think he is just fine with that role. I believe he is going to be better than some think. The fact he went to juco for something other than grades tells me he won't be a lazy kid, who won't work hard. With Cal as coach, if you have talent and a killer work ethic, you can't go wrong.

Mulder will be a great bench player. He is used to coming off the bench in junior college so he will know his role well. Look for him to dominate in small stretches.
