Where Stoops Has Brought Us

Yeah, the fact that we are going to a bowl EVERY year now is in itself quite an achievement for the UK football program. I am old enough to remember a time when getting to a bowl a couple of times in a decade was reason for celebration. We are definitely in the best position we've been in during my lifetime.

Granted, none of us want the level of success to plateau here. But we've gone from being an absolute cellar dweller to a mid-level SEC program. Being able to make that transition and being able to sustain at this level is absolutely a prerequisite for taking that next step up the ladder.

This is true, but a lot of us believed we were going to have a truly memorable year with a NFL QB and some very good WRs, and a good defense, with NFL coaches. I can't describe at how disappointing Scang was to so many of us. Also the OL coach Yenser. Right now I am just trusting Stoops knows what he is doing retaining him because I saw nothing worth hanging onto.

Y’all overlook the fact it’s easier than ever to make it to a bowl. Since 2013 we’re allowed to play an extra stinky team, the SEC East has been pitiful, and we’ve given Stoops more resources and money than ever before.

I don’t think you can really compare 2022 UK football to 2002.

You over look the fact that Joker left the cupboard empty fo Stoops when he came on board. He took over a team with one player that ran better than a 4.5 forty. After prioritizing recruiting for a few years his numbers are impressive. The record from 2017 - 2021 is 40-23 which is second only to GA. In the East over that time. UK also has the longest non conference winning streak in the nation with wins over Penn St, Iowa, Va Tech and North Carolina St.. The only reason we lost to Northwestern was the crazy official that kicked Benny out of the game.

It is easier to make a bowl than ever before, but for many years UK played 11 games and only 6 SEC games. We played 5 OOC opponents, who were generally not great teams, and struggled to win 6 games. While it’s hard to compare, it was certainly just as easy to have a winning record when 5 of your 11 games are within your control.

Those who argue how much easier it is to get to a bowl, need to remember that UK went bowling with a 6-4-1 record in 1983, and a 6-6 record 14 years ago.

Because we haul a good crowd, any UK team that showed a pulse got invited even with a poor record, playing only 6 SEC teams (1980’s) and dregs like Tulane, Rutgers, Kansas State (when they were pathetic) and IU to fill out the schedule.

It is hard to miss a bowl

Texas a&m is paying $95 million and couldn't

7-5 used to be cause for a parade. Now it was unacceptable and we fired our offensive and special teams coaches days after seasons end.

The expectations have been raised by all, and that's great. Backsliding won't be tolerated.
As stated, it is a hard thing to do.

That’s stoops fault for hiring Scang. He did about as good as he could with abandoning that ship ASAP. All you can really ask for. He made the correct choice to cut Scang loose.

You're truly the Debbie Downer of this board

Stoops is paid just as well as Fisher, with more money comes higher expectations

Since 82 out of 130 FBS teams play in a bowl game I really don't think that's much of a metric for measuring success.

Essentially Stoops has lifted Kentucky from a perennial bottom tier team to the mid tier and pushing the top tier. Has elevated recruiting classes from the 60s and 50s to the 30s and 20s and better, has hired high quality coaches some from the NFL that would not have given Kentucky a sniff in previous yeras, has kept the program relatively clean, with only a few minor issues. He has achieved 10 game seasons twice in recent years and has put numerous players in the NFL. All that has resulted in national respect for Kentucky as a football program. That is something we have not seen since the early 1950s.

He’s brought us to the point that going to the Music City Bowl is a hum drum disappointment

I would never have dreamed of such a thing during the Curry years

I think it's the changing landscape of the game as well. Division 1 football is finally getting with the 20th and 21st century and having a real playoff with a decent amount of teams in 2 years. Naturally outside of the new years 6 bowls, all focus is on the playoff. The other 35 bowl games are great window dressing but are more for the younger players for next year's team to get experience.

You add in the same opponent as last year and the best 2 players resigning from the team weeks before the bowl, it's not something a lot of fans are that excited about.

I can agree that is 1998 a Tim Couch led UK went 7-5 regular season and got the team to the Outback bowl and most of us fans thought that was a special season. Now 7-5 regular season was a disappointment. Since we have had 2, 9-3 regular seasons we want the next level a double-digit regular season. A New Year's 6 bowl game. Dare I say when they expand the playoffs a playoff berth!

I think it is possible. This years team could have done it if they stayed healthy. Must have improved special teams. ST cost the team at least 2 wins this year. That is the difference in playing football on January 1st or before.

Got to cut Scang more slack than that. Coming in first year installing your system then realizing after two games 90% of what you installed and planned to use just isnt going to work due to problems up front. Remember how excited and optimistic he was himself in pre-season?

I think all his came as a shock to him too. Still he should have done a better job adjusting on the fly and he didnt and thats why he's gone. But its not like the guy cant coach at all or his system was trash. We dont really know becuase we never got to see it in full motion.

His system was trash and he couldn’t coach. Did you watch the Tenn game? The Vandy game?

His game plan was to run and throw screen passes against 2 of the worst pass defenses in the country. This was late in the season and had nothing to do with the Oline

This is it

Stoops has definitely elevated the program and the expectations. He's brought a winning culture and expectations to UK, but the most important thing is his loyalty. He has not used UK as a stepping stone and that's something he should be rewarded for. He could have easily sought out and likely obtained a higher profile job after the first 10-3 season, had he put in effort seeking one. but he didn't. He's here and will leave on his terms at this point. And he's made UK a desired job for whoever may come next as opposed to being the coaching graveyard we once were. Yeah, this season was a disappointment, but if you look at where we are vs. what we were 10 years ago, we can still take pride now in being a UK football fan as opposed to being embarrassed. We still have progress to make, but I think the program is in good hands to get us to that next step if the school continues to give him the tools and resources he needs to accomplish it.

Stoops doing good we won 3 out of 8 sec games this year 3 better than none thats fore sure.

That team was 7-4 in a regular season of 8 SEC games plus Louisville and Indiana. So basically 6-4 vs P5 equivalent teams.

Our last two 9-3 teams went 6-3 vs. P5 teams, as we play 3 cupcakes now instead of 1. Two extra built-in wins is huge.

The difference of course is winning the bowl games which Stoops did while in ‘98 we didn’t. Otherwise very comparable seasons.

Louisville in 1998 was a CUSA group of 5 program. They joined a strip mined Big East in 2005. Did not become a Power 5 program until 2014 season. They were 16 years from being a Power 5 program in 1998. no one thought in any way then they were an 'equivalent' major conference level program, get out of here with that nonsense.

They were starting a 9 year bowl streak at the time, and had had two top 25 finishes in the 90’s up until then. They were better than our typical MAC/FCS cupcake we play now, easily. Probably better than Indiana, anyways.

Just saying. I love stoops and don’t want him to leave or anything, but 10 wins now is as good as 8 in the 90’s. Which is why we shouldn’t look at guys like Couch or Lorenzen as unsuccessful.

Some of our fans don’t like when you bring up facts.
