It would be interesting to see the coaches who were bandied about for the UK job are doing in their current job. Maybe someone make a list of these guys? There were plenty of names thrown out there, some were probably legit candidates and some were not. I'm happy with Stoops.

Butch Jones - Doing Pretty good @ that gross ORANGE he##hole
Sonny Dykes - 1-11 year one then 5-7 last year @ Cal Bears
there were a couple of others I remember but they were OC or RB coaches in NFL

Cannot for the life of me remember any others from College level except Cutcliff....

Mike Leach: 6-7 and 3-9 in 2 years that Stoops has been here.
Mario Cristobal - fired bu FIU after 2012 season

Mike MacIntyre at Colorado (hired from San Jose State)
4-8 first year
2-10 last year

Not trying to hijack the thread, but does anyone know who was actually interviewed for the job? Obviously CMS, and I'm pretty sure Butch Jones was interviewed/offered....Anyone else? Mitch and Co. did a pretty good job keeping the search low-key.

Kirby Smart was on the list here at Rivals but he seems to be on every list that comes out every year for every head coaching job. Most figured the UK job wasn't one he'd jump at but I'm curious what kind of job he expects to get as his first HC gig

Wow, if I recall there were several people on this board who wanted MacIntyre too. Looks like he's bombing out.

I would give him a couple more years there. Colorado was a dumpster fire when he got there. The previous 2 coaches were 23 - 60 including 4 - 21 the two years before he took over. Not saying he will succeed, just not sure I would call it bombing out just yet.

I liked him even though he had no charisma. LOL Curious to see if he can put it together in his third year or is on his way out with another poor team.

True. It's not like Barnhart published a list of candidates. But, IIRC, there was serious interest in Jones who slow played the Cats before landing the UT job where he is 12-13 the past 2 years.

Sonny Dykes was reported by multiple sources as being a strong candidate. Sonny went 1-11 his first year and 5-7 the second year. Like the Cats, the Bears are looking for a breakout season in year 3 and are one of Steele's "15 Most improved" for 2015.

Gary Andersen is another name that might (?) have come up. He did leave Utah State later that year to take the WI job where he went 9-4 and 10-2 in 2013 and 2014. Strangely left there for Oregon State this year.

There was plenty of speculation on others but Jones and Dykes seem to be the two names that came up most frequently. Ironically, there was little or no mention of Mark Stoops in the early speculation.

Peace

Stoops name didn't come out until maybe a day before he accepted the job. I think Jones and Dykes could've had some success here but I'm not sure that either of them could've recruited the way this staff has so far given the state of the program when they arrived. It's pretty remarkable the way we've been winning recruiting battles at a high rate against established programs like Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan St., Florida, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Stoops has also done an amazing job of getting boosters excited and funneling their money I to football again where before it was all going to basketball. I never would've imagined all of the renovations would come this fast after the coaching change

Don't get me wrong Jones is doing an amazing job recruiting at UT but he's selling a Mercedes to a state that's had a recent boom in talent while he would've been selling a Kia to out of state kids here

Strictly looking at Jones and Dykes, give Barnhart some credit - both of those guys would've done okay here at UK. Think Jones would have improved UK just probably not as quickly as he's improved UT. Dykes would've been more like Mumme, II but I think he would've improved us, also, just slower than even Stoops has done, imo. Cal has a ton of in-state talent around it but it's been probably the 4th school of choice historically. And that's just the in-state schools, not counting AZ, Ariz St, Oregon, etc. who all probably have greater pull than Cal.

It ultimately came down to Stoops and MacIntyre. I figured we would go after the no name guy who had little to no southeast connections (Mac) because we've made the wrong hire for 50 years running so I figured we wouldn't change now. When I heard that Stoops was genuinely interested I was super pumped because he was a stud Defensive Coordinator at a premiere school but I just thought we would find a way to blow it. I have to give Mitch credit on hiring Stoops. He has done an AMAZING job in 2.5 years.

Petrino, 9-4 at UofL. But even if he kicks our ass for the next 10 years, I'll still be glad he isn't at UK.
Honest Boob fits right in at Lil Brother..scummy liar no morals ADULTERER..all the traits of a good uavel Coach..seems right at home in that garbage dump..

Jones and Dykes were both at the top of my list. I've always been a fan of Dykes. He will win at Cal. I can see him being a lifer there. He won't win big enough to get a bigger job but enough to keep them happy. Speaking of happy. I'm glad we got the coach we got. He's the man for the job. And speaking of lifers..I hope he's our lifer.

I don't know Smart personally, but he and Bobo were teammates and big buddies during their time at UGA. When Willie Martinez was fired as DC, Smart was the top pick, Bobo reached out to judge the interest in moving to UGA. He said he was interested, word was he interviewed, accepted the job and went back to Bama to tell Saban. Saban supposely told him why go as DC when in 2 years you can apply for head coach when Richt is fired. So we hired Grantham. Saban held a press conference saying Smart was staying at Bama while Kirby sat beside him and didn't say a word the entire press conference. Saban needs Smart for his recruiting, I think he has convinced him when Saban does step down Smart will be the next coach at Bama. That would surprise me, Bama hasn't had much luck hiring coordinators, they have gone after successful head coaches. Smart might go after the USC job when it opens up,
