Since the Rams offense has been very mediocre - to - bad this year, why would we be so fired up about having him back? He certainly did a good job last year (with an infinitely better OL, btw) but not exactly tearing up the NFL this year. I know, McVey calls the plays. So, has this year provided a huge learning opportunity if Coen is not actually the OC/in charge? And, if so, the results on the field don't show much this year. I loved Coen and the offense last year was light years ahead of what we'd been running. But, giving LC this year's OL with consistently poor play, missed assignments, false starts, etc., I think it's a stretch to think the results would have been significantly better.
In one of the threads today, there is a cut up of a couple of plays against UT. In one Flax is too slow (or just piss poor technique) to pull into the hole to give McClain about 15 yards of running room; in the other, Burton flat out whiffs on his man leaving CRod to be hit in the backfield on a play that should have gained 5 yards. The play design was solid and should have resulted in solid gains had the OL executed properly. Think Coen is so good he can overcome THAT? I attended the MO game Saturday and there was no difference in that game. Flax jumped twice. Several times rushers came right through unimpeded. Ballcarriers hit in the backfield a LOT. Even in short yardage situations, there was no push up front - Missouri's DL just held their ground and, in some cases, pushed our guys backwards. You'd have to be a freaking offensive magician to scheme around an OL that just isn't very capable right now. And, btw, for many more plays than we had to last year, we're keeping backs and/or TEs in to block just to keep Will from being crushed. Coen didn't have to do that very often.
