When did the Music City Bowl become insignificant?

Just wondering because I don’t remember anybody saying that any of the other times we played in it.

I guess when we went to it after years without a bowl. ?

Are we building as a program, or just loving the Music City Bowl? Which one do you want?

It's just a low tiered bowl, which most are already glorified exhibitions anyways. It's good for the younger players and more practice but it's a bit of a letdown.

Bowl season outside of the playoff and new years 6 games is bloated and boring anyways. Division 1 College football is so behind in terms of post season play compared to other pro and college sports and lags behind high school sports as well.

When more warm weather bowls started. Noone goes on vacation to Nashville. That's a weekend trip. Florida, Las Vegas, etc, on the other hand are vacation destinations.

I would rather watch a college football bowl than a meaningless basketball game. Talk about boring regular season college basketball.
I used to be this way but since I got the firestick there are literally hundreds of new things to watch. It gets so if I find something I like I almost have to binge watch it for fear of never finding it again.

At 6.2 million per team, the Music City is 6th amoung non playoff teams in payout. It is not insignificant in terms of money earned. Disappointing in terms of exceptions but a very respectable bowl.

Right. It isn't insignificant at all. Nashville has one of the biggest Nye celebrations in the nation. Anyone who's been a fan for more than 15 minutes knows 90% of our history we'd be ecstatic with the mcb.

It's ok to be disappointed we didn't win the sec east etc, but it's asinine to act like this bowl is some cellar dweller turd bowl.

Its a big bowl when you haven't been to a bowl in decades - lol! Still a nice bowl from a payout standpoint - but lets bace it when you could pick would you choose it over the Citrus, Outback (Reliant), Gator or even the Texas Bowl? Playing in a nice warm destination near beaches and many other attractions is preferred to playing in the 20's and snow in Nashville - unless you wanted to go to Nashville for a long weekend - lol!

Go Big Blue!

Because someone said it once and it sounded good to the people that wanted to hear it at the time. They repeated it, and someone who wants to feel better about their low level of support for or loyalty to the program has latched unto it now so they can repeat it endlessly so it can become "true."

They are insignificant to people that don't give a sht about football, or the players playing it, or those that do care about them. They are insignificant to people that don't understand the game.

The bowl game is meaningless as well. Most teams college football seasons are meaningless too other than the true contenders. Terrible post season.

The music city isn’t a low tier bowl it’s upper mid tier. It’s been slotted in the same tier as the gator, Belk (pre change), etc… if you look at participants it’s a good bowl. It’s just not in Florida and I think because of that, because it’s near ky and because we went a lot when brooks was at UK I think it just feels ‘old hat’. I mean I would rather be somewhere else but it’s not because it’s a dud. Good city, good stadium, good payout, big conference opponents…it’s not as down the line as it is being portrayed by some.

A lot of fans are disappointed in the Music City Bowl because many on here was hoping for a trip to Atlanta this year. Nashville does a good job promoting the MCB.

I think it’s less about the MCB, but more about playing Iowa again, which will be painful to watch for both teams.

I would have rather gone to the Liberty bowl and play KU.

When it's basically in a level with Florida, Texas, and Vegas as bowl destinations do you really have to ask why people don't want to go there? Most of us (instate Kentuckians) could drive down to Nashville anytime for a day or two and back no problem. You can't say that about the other places.

It's just not a destination that most want bowl season to be. They want to go someplace that they can be out and about enjoying the sights. December 31st in Nashville isn't that. Throw in our opponent being the same as last year and it makes it worse. Iowa is our John McClain (wrong place at the wrong time).

It doesn't help that we've been there so many times since it's inception in I believe 98. Been there more than any 2 other SEC teams combined. Pretty screwed up when they have 2 teams instate that can't beat our total together.

I think all of the bowls will become less significant when we go to a 12 team playoff field. The so-called mid tier bowls won't have any teams that even sniffed the top 25 during the season. Then when you add the portal and opt-outs they drop even further.

I predict some of the small bowls will start folding their tent.

Good point.
If the new system wants to incorporate existing bowls and not home site for best record, not counting the national title game we likely look at 10 bowls.
5-12 play, winners play 1-4, winners play for right for the title.
Currently in the playoff is a rotation of Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Peach, Orange.
Keep those and 4 other sites would be needed.

So who? Outback maybe? Gator? Texas? MCB?

There will likely be a lot of politics in who gets the slots.

The other sites (first round) will be home games. After that, four current NY6 bowls, then the two others, than the championship game.

Music City is not terrible. It's No. 3 out of the Group of 6, behind Outback, now ReliaQuest, and Gator, and above Liberty, Texas, and Vegas/Belk. As others have already pointed out, the problem isn't the bowl as much as a repeat opponent what plays a similar game to us.

I wouldn’t say it is insignificant. But when the early expectations from the fan base and most of the media said that Kentucky would be the third best team in the SEC and at one point we’re projected to go to a sugar or orange bowl then yes it feels insignificant. Losing to SC and Vandy really killed the bowl game excitement.

At 6.2 million per team, the Music City is 6th amoung non playoff teams in payout. It is not insignificant in terms of money earned. Disappointing in terms of exceptions but a very respectable bowl.
SEC shares all bowl revenue equally among its member schools so, no real financial benefit to UK there.
The disappointment comes from the expectations by fans that this team would do better than a 7-5 record. I think many were expecting 9-10 regular season wins. Whether that was realistic is a subject that will be debated for a while.
At the end of the day, going to a mid-tier bowl is better than not going to a bowl but, with all the opt outs and transfer portal upheaval, the benefits are minimal.

Depends on the sights. There will be 1000s that travel to Nashville for their huge Nye bash. That isn't my cup of tea but it certainly won't lack for things to do

To be honest it has never been what you would call "significant". It is a bowl game that most Top 25 teams would see as a disappointment if their luck brought them there. Did we begin the season with our sights set on the Music City Bowl. I sure hope not.

I have been to 3 of them and they were my least favorite bowl games. One year we even had a suite with all of the food and drink one could want included and I still enjoyed other bowl games more. And we beat FSU

Same, been twice (1999 and 2006), missed all the rest and won't go this year either.

Outback and Citrus (went to both) are my favorites.

The MCB will be one of the Bowls in 12 team Playoffs. Remember Nashville building a Domed Stadium.

If lower tier bowls are good enough then I guess fans should be happy. Next step should be consistent 9-10 win seasons and higher tier bowl games.

All bowls have gone through cycles. At first only the ones on New Years Day were really 'important'. Then the BCS came along. Then ESPN and the NCAA grew from 20 bowls to 40. Then when the CFB playoffs started every bowl was degraded, and that is when players started opting out. Because ESPN only talked playoffs, so anything else didn't matter.

Is that the players fault, or the adults?

I agree with everything you’re saying, but to be clear, players ARE adults. Idk when we started treating 18-22 year olds as non-adults but it’s odd.
