And I thought yesterday's Petrino/Harley Davidson advertisement was tone deaf....

I am shocked that anyone made that connection. I really am.

But in today's world, anything and everything is offensive and inappropriate.

What on god's green earth were they thinking...? If anything can even jokingly be construed as rape, don't post it, much less if you've actually had that problem on your team.... Wow.

I can hear the conversations in the Ad's office: We need to expand our fan base; not just appeal to the typical vandy crowd (pencil holder in their shirt pocket, etc...). We need to appeal to Nashville's "man on the street". We need a different class of fan.

Intern: " I have a good idea for a slogan."

the connection was made because of Vandys recent troubles in that area

Which I'm well aware of...

Even knowing that before I saw the tweet, I still didn't make the connection.

I mean... Really? Is our country just really ****ing immature? What's going on?

No kidding, this makes "Operation Win" a marketing masterpiece

Worked for basketball in the same year. Also, "Rise" worked for several other football programs around the country the same yr. The difference was that all the other programs won.......we didn't.

I know how you feel. If the chain of command doesn't take rape serious why should we? My Gawd what has this country come to!

Someone in the marketing department really should have understood that this was not a good choice of words.

Even if the rape accusation never happened that's just kind of a weird slogan altogether lol it does kinda feel like a Joker-esque special

Look, it ain't a big leap or being politically correct to think of rape & Vandy football since a gang rape trial involving both just concluded weeks ago

Vandy has been Joker-ed. Their players do not respect him. He goes around calling recruits "young blood." Come on, that is not a leader.

I saw this and just laughed. How dumb do you have to be? How funny would it be though if the marketing guy in charge of this was a UT Vol and just trolled the hell out of Vandy?

What I don't get is even without the rape case it doesn't make sense. Don't need permission for what???

One would have needed to be familiar with a prior tweet by Mason in order to understand the "we don't need permission" tweet in context. Mason had earlier tweeted following his ESPN visit: "Back in Nashville and the work never stops. This team wants, what some say it can't obtain. Sorry .... we don't need your permission!" The later controversial tweet reaffirmed the rallying premise that the team doesn't need permission to believe in itself.

anyone read maxim back in the day and remember the "found porn" segments? this seemed like one of those. something that taken on its face was not at all offesive but then you think about it for a second and go " wtf????"

Yeah well unfortunately when your team has gone through one of the highest profile and disturbing rape cases in the history of college athletics and when the school is getting ready to have to deal with that rape case all over again. "We don't need your permission" would be a terrible slogan period, but when multiple players on the same team gang-raped a passed out girl it makes it especially bad.

The fact that anyone made that connection goes to show how desperate people are to for drama.

It's sad.

What the hell are you talking about? You are aware of the Vandy rape case, right? The attention it's gotten is based on the pure stupidity of the Vandy marketing folks to put this out on the heels of the rape case. Get it? Good lord, how many times do we have to explain it to you. Pretty simple and it seems the one being dramatic is you.

Your ignorance is what is sad.

Struck a nerve?

When I read that originally, and after one of the FB groups told me why it was offensive, I still didn't make the connection. AFAIAC, the rape case is over and done with. The fact that a coach made a comment and used the phrase 'we dont need permission' has absolutely nothing to do with the rape incident, unless you want it to.

I get it. I also get that it's people looking for an excuse to be offended, again.

What was dramatic about anything I said? Please, point it out to me.

The rape case is FAR from over. A mistrial was declared and Vandenburg and Batey have been released from jail until the new trial. The girl will get to live through another trial and deal with these two douchebags yet again.

I live in the Metro Nashville area and the moment that tweet went out everyone was shocked and appalled. Even Saturday Down South did an article about it. Sports talk radio was all over it yesterday and still talking about it today.

People that don't get offended were pissed about it and it gave Vandy yet another black eye.

I'm not trying to offend you but you do not seem to have your facts correct and maybe should spend some time on that before you start pulling the trigger on posters here.

Ahh I assumed it was over.

I heard one passing mention about it on sports radio here in Indy, and saw a blurb on KSR.

I didn't challenge anyone here, nor did I say anything dismissive or rude.

I simply said it didn't seem like an issue unless you were looking for it (I'm guessing most here read an article or saw a tweet telling them it was odd language before they read the actual tweet).

I'm not even a teensy bit politically correct and I immediately made the connection. Hilarrus. Who is running their social nedia account??

Assuming and calling people desperate when they clearly have more of the facts is not only inappropriate but pretty rude. Just saying.

Your post is brilliant and on point.

I think the slogan is stupid, but far from offensive.
