Has three more years on his contract. But they don't pay him 4 million dollars to go 6-6.

Right now his recruiting class is 42nd in the nation.

I kind of don't think he doesn't want to coach anymore. But his son is offensive coordinator. And he can't name his successor going 6-6. I doubt that guy could be named a coordinator again, let alone head coach.

So do they hang on to him? Hope he leaves on his own? Fire him? I think they have a problem down there on their hands.

I think he'll quietly retire after this year. He just isn't the same coach and over 70. Everyone's time comes to an end.

I also think he will retire. He just seemed like he had enough when watching his interviews during and after the game.

I'm guessing (just like you) that he will do whatever he wishes. In the end, who will SC replace him with that is better? The SC football facilities are pretty damn nice. Mostly due to him and his family. So I say again, he will do whatever he wishes, when he wishes to do.

Unless South Carolina improves significantly, and that seems unlikely, I would not be surprised to see him retire after this year. His son is OC in name only since the ol' ball coach calls the plays and basically controls everything on the offensive side of the ball. I wouldn't expect him to take over for SOS when he's gone.

Spurrier's heart is just not in it any more. You could see it on the sideline whenever the camera focused on him. He seems to have lost his inner fire. I say he retires after this year. He probably should have retired after last season. If he stays on, the SC program is going to continue to go down. I don't think he inspires talented players to come there any more.

Guess going to and winning the Liberty Bowl last year is a low point for Spurrier? After beating Wisconsin, Nebraska and Michigan the previous bowls with 6-2 SEC records.
Holtz and Spurrier have laid a pretty good foundation for a program that was a dreg of college football.

Spurrier still seems to love coaching. He does not have the weapons he had 2-4 years ago and recruiting seems difficult, probably because players from out of state question his longevity. I hope he coaches until he wants to quit.

And, when he retires, I hope ESPN grabs ahold and we get to be entertained.

Doesnt really matter what they do from our perspective, we have passed them by.

Either they will go through a messy transition to a new coach/staff/systems/personnel this coming offseason or next. Whenever it happens it will take them some time to attempt to catch up with us. Meanwhile we will have our sights on those in front of us in the conference pecking order and shouldnt worry about those we have left behind.

USCjr let Holtz stick around until he had an awful 2-9 team, should be interesting to see if they let Superior stay until he wants to leave or they are awful, whichever comes first. Personally I think that defense along with Cooper is good enough for them to not be awful this season, and I think he doesnt want to hang it up yet. That press conference he held last month angrily stating he isnt retiring anytime soon wasnt just an act IMO.

Plus competing for Palmetto state talent with Dabo Swinney and the program he's built.

USCjr hiring Strong would the best thing for everyone involved....USCjr, Strong, and Texas

i think everyone is burying spurrier a little too quick... one thing no one is considering is that we might actually be a pretty good team and scar might be better on D than last year and if they can figure out a qb they might be better on O. what if they end up still winning 6 this year with the true freshman qb... he's coming back then a little cocky.

At one point near the end of the game, he adjusted his visor three times, but he did not throw it. To me, hat show a lack of fire.

Does it seem like this is starting to look like Joe Pa without that other scandal that will not be mentioned here? It just seems forever since we saw the Fun and Gun. He's done a complete 180 with his coaching philosophy. It just seems like the game has passed him by a little bit to me and at 70 it isn't likely to come back. To me, it's a little sad when someone just can't live without the game and I think they may be what's going on here. That being said, I'm 47 and has changed the game of college football in my lifetime more than anyone else I can think of.

You know 2 people I think do get it. Jimmy Johnson and John Gruden. Why deal with all of the headaches of coaching when you can have a great, really easy job and still make millions.

Clearly, Spurrier isn't what he once was. The league has only gotten tougher and his age I think is starting to limit his ability to recruit. Even so, he remains a very good coach and I'm just not sure South Carolina can find someone of equal/better ability to replace him with. Outside the Spurrier era, South Carolina has had a fairly mediocre history. Maybe they would come calling for Honest Bobby? That is about the only established coach I could see them landing at this point.

We should have faked taking a knee and threw long on the last play, like he used to do to us. Doesn't anyone else remember the 50-yard bomb he threw against us on the last play, when up by 3 TDs during the Mumme Era? He was every bit as big a horse's ass as Petrino in his day, only without the off-field scandals. I hope he loses every damn game he ever coaches, unless a win by SC would somehow help us.

I dislike Spurrier's behavior sometimes, but facts are facts. Aside from being a Heisman Trophy winner, Spurrier has had a great coaching career at Duke, Florida, South Carolina. He hasn't had a losing season since 1987, his 1st season at Duke. In 2011-13, his teams had 3 straight 11 win seasons. He has won 227 college football games. He has achieved success in the football business that most coaches will never achieve. He won a national championship, played for another championship, and he has won 11 bowl games. It is a joke for armchair quarterbacks to criticize him. We live in an immediate gratification age where people are ready to bury you the very 1st moment you look vulnerable. Spurrier is 70 years old, but he could still mop the floor with most football coaches. That Stoops already beat him twice is a great statement about Stoops, and a great sign for where Kentucky's program is headed. Although we also beat Spurrier last year, he ended the season by beating Miami in the Independence Bowl while we watched on TV. Spurrier is still a very good coach who will retire on his own terms.
