I was just thinking about him. If I remember right he was a 5* & he chose UK over Bama & this was after Stoops first season which finished 2-10. Well anyways was just wondering whatever happened to him & if he ever panned out & lived up to the hype?

Too big, too slow, poor fundamentals. And too big I mean too much bad weight.

Definitely one of the few disappointing recruits from the Stoops era.

If he loves football though then why not? Sure won’t ever get a shot in the League
To be honest, he's probably not a XFL prospect either. XFL will mostly consist of marginal NFL prospects, practice squad cuts, UDFAs who almost made the cut, etc- guys like Baity and West and probably Kash next year are XFL types. I wish Elam all of the success in the world and from all accounts he was a great teammate and all around good guy, but professional football is probably not in his future unless he wants to someday coach.

Oh I agree. I just didn’t understand the above post where he doesn’t want to play minor league ball, well unfortunately that would be only route because XFL and definitely NFL guys would kill him

Heard a good Matt Elam story the other day actually. Someone close to the team, at that time, told me Matt had someone assigned to him to make sure he was doing the right thing. It was things like going to class, making practice on time, and eating habits for his weight loss. This person said one day Matt wasn't at practice so his assigned tracker was sent to get him. The guy found Matt sleeping in his room with his hand stuck in an empty box of twinkies. I know it sounds too good to be true but this person was on the staff at the time and wouldn't make it up. Plenty of other stories, but I figured this was a good one for the Matt Elam thread lol.

Maybe he isn't interested in minor league football.
I thought I heard him mentioned with the Alliance of American Football League when it was still operating (all 2 weeks of it). I remember Timmons,Ross and Macginnis playing.

I heard he was bagging groceries at Kroger.

I heard that too. But then I heard that Kroger's closed. It kept running out of food. Just kidding. He was a fine young man. I just wish there was some cure for that craving. It would have saved Jared's life. I know there are some surgical procedures, but they come with serious risks and lap bands(my wife had that) have some negative life changing food choice requirements(suggestions). My pastor almost died from the surgical procedure.

I believe rivals had him as a 3 star. He played too tall and couldn’t get leverage. Couldn’t lose enough weight either. Never panned out.

Should of redshirted, heck he might have been a really good olineman after a year on the weights. We’ll never know.

Yeah always thought he was too big for DL.

Staff should have moved him to the offensive side of the ball to see if he panned out as a reliable guard or center. Not fast or athletic enough for OT. If nothing else, he could have dropped weight and been a short-yardage and goaline TE.

Hindsight being 20/20, he and Barker not panning out was a blow to the first part of the CMS era. A lot of time on the recruiting trail was put into those two, which took time away from other recruits and might have swayed other DTs and QBs to look elsewhere.

I mean they came in as the centerpieces of the Stoops Troops revolution. To not have your prize QB and DL work out is a gut punch.

Such is life though. Some times shit doesn't work out.

barker not planning out was nothing to do with the staff. Back injury forced retirement could not be prevented.

but I’m so glad we got barker as he was a very big reason a lot of other talent chose Lexington! That effort was far from wasted!

by that regard barker might of been the most important recruit stoops has ever signed

Lots of exercise, serious watching of carbs and sugars intake...it's called a lifestyle change!!

If he had listened to the experts he would have been converted to an offensive lineman and might be cashing checks but he didn’t

I admit I made a couple of smart assed comments about Elam that now I wish I had left unsaid.
At this time I don’t see the point continuing to crack on him.

That's great to hear I knew he was a big guy maybe one day the Mods can do a "where are they now" piece on him & just see what he's up too.

I had a sleeve done about 7 months ago, down 160 lb. Feel better than I felt in years walking an hour a day. Never had any issues with the procedure, no pain, nausea or anything that surgeon said I could suffer. And am no longer on any kind of medication. Nearly 70 years old and drove myself home the day after the procedure.

Gotta say, I really didn't expect these sorts of comments. At the risk of sounding like Spamburger, I'm disappointed in some of you folks.
You're not Spamburger- he's worse than Jiminy Cricket and worse than Fuzz times a thousand. He's the smartest and most mature guy in the room and 99% of his posts are to let us know how kneejerk and dumb we are and there's always one like him on every board.

no, not good...Jared retold stories of himself like that...dying from being unable to control anything (drugs, alcohol, food, etc.) isn't to be lol

I didn’t mean it in that way... but it is 2019 so I guess I should’ve worded it differently.

Jared didn't die from his weight. He may have down the road but he got some type of bad infection and went septic that's what ended his life. As far as Elam goes enough has been said about his weight. His biggest problem? Just not very good at football. He was 3* or 5* based on potential because of his size not because of what he ever did on the field. If watched him for 1 play you know he was no good. Just stood there and got blown off the ball damn near every play.

decorum, civility, empathy and compassion don't need a year...and oh, BTW Jared Lorezen just DIED from weight issues
I was simply telling a story. Nothing I said was about Jared in any way so please do not put those words in my mouth. I WILL be there Saturday to honor Jared in all that he not only did for the school but this State.
