Just because a kid doesnt have 15 stars by his name doesnt mean he cant play...Willis and Hawkins can play...we got beat by a bunch of slow white guys in Wisconsin and Notre Dame came damn close...Hawkins did damn well in the games he started for Lyles...im tired of these kids being written off...let em play and see what happens
Well I'm glad SOMEBODY knows how to divvy minutes and run a team at Kentucky. Cal certainly hasn't had any success at it.
While I respect your attempt to defend Hawkins and what he can do on this team I just can't believe your original post. Are you kidding me (us)? Hawkins started a handful of games and then played very little the rest of the game. While he started he was surrounded by future NBA players who, do you think, might have made him look a little better? I'm all for Hawkins and hope he has a successful year but I think your point just isn't very valid. If he did so well when he was starting and playing those few minutes early in the season why didn't Cal have him in games at the end of the season? Please don't go on now and say Cal made mistakes and didn't have a clue about what he was doing.
Im saying kids that arent highly as touted can play...had Kantor been ruled eligible. ..Harrelson would have never seen the court...i think we went to final 4 that year...i just caution you to not get fixated on the rankings...somr kids can play...Hawkins is a winner...who knows about Willis...needs some minutes to know for sure...he looked damn good in Bahamas
I mean this season coming up...if they are allowed to play and i mean play...not one mistake and yank....allowed to play thru mistakes just like all the other guys....you will find this Willis kid can play...he will be too three rebounder if allowed to play 20 plus minutes
They will get their chance just like everyone else in practice. Right now Hawkins has just as much chance as anyone to get some playing time, and Willis certainly does with the lack of options at the 4/5. If UK somehow signs Murray though I do not see it for Hawkins, just too many better players in front of him. If Hawkins could do anything on offense to go along with his solid to good D he would get some minutes consistently.
I'll also link from J. Scott's site Hawkin's stats in 446 minutes over two seasons. That is not a lot of run, but look at the 2 point shooting, 3 point shooting, and FT stats. They really tell anyone who is not biased why he has not played much except when it was really necessary.

He's been really rough offensively. Don't think anyone would argue with that. However he was one of the bigger reasons that Kentucky beat Michigan because he played Stauskus very tough in the second half after Stauskus had like 15 points in the first half.
Yes, he played well on defense that game...he is a good defender. The problem was last year we had pretty good defenders all around in most games, so the players with the better offense are going to play. It will be the same thing this season unless he really works on his offense. 39% FT shooting is pretty indefensible for a guard (or anyone so talking to Mr. Lee as well).
Players "have to have" opportunities to play through their mistakes if they are to gain confidence and grow.
Hawkins , Lee, & Willis have not been given that opportunity as of now. When they are given that, then we will see the real player, whatever that may be. (good, better, or best)

Granted, there are some players who are under ranked and play well immediately but for the most part, the ranking do a good job of ranking talent. Not to say that lower ranked kids can't play but they usually need time to develope into really productive players. Kaminsky is a good example.
In Dom's case, he can't score right now. He may develope an offensive game but right now he just can't score. Plus, who wouldve played in front of last season? Andrew? Tyler? Aaron? Devin? All a big fat NO! Sorry but its true. He just didn't offer enough to justify taking minutes away from others.
