One if my best friends went to the game tonight and he loves UK bb like several of us here do. He said it's amazing to watch the coaches making mistakes with situations that you learn to do in little league bb. It's just simply time for a change.Recruit better, especially freshmen, and especially pitchers. He's been here 6 years and we've yet to recruit a single pitcher we would consider an SEC ace. Actually... not sure he's recruited a quality SEC starter, at best he's gotten tranfers that filled that role, never freshmen. This goes with development as well.
But also think about this... next year we will lose every offensive player except Church. Are we seriously working freshmen or sophomores to get them experience in preparation for this? Nope not much if ever. So, Mingione will likely scramble to fill the gaps with transfers once again. Rinse. Repeat.
Develop an identity offensively. What kind of team do we want to be? Small ball? Mashers? A lot of hit and run? Develop that identity and recruit to it. We've never done that. Better approaches at the plate. Less strikeouts.
Better defense. Much of which isn't talent but a lack of focus, communication or players not playing in a place they're comfortable.
Understand who is doing well and who is struggling and how/where to put them into the lineup to be successful. For instance, Fogel hit 4th forever. He did terrible. Still has no business there. He's got like maybe 1 HR on the year. He's not a 4. Why was he ever there and why did he stay there so long? Also when he shuffles the lineup is weird and makes no sense. Church plays his first game in a month on a weekend. Would make more sense to get him into a weekday game against worse pitching to get him seeing it well, but we don't do that. Also why do some stay in while others don't? Plastiak is hitting .175 against SEC pitching. When do you move Church to first and let Felker DH, the same Felker hitting a team leading .368 against league pitching? What about Rubalcaba? Hitting .204 in league play. When do you try Burkes more?
Pitching wise... I dont know what happened in the fall but it quickly became apparent that Williams was the best pitcher and could start. Why wasn't he even in the final list of 2 or 3 to fill that role? So just some of these roster decisions are head scratchers.
These weird moves haven’t been just this season, they have been since he arrived. Nothing he does makes any sense! I try and figure out the reasoning but I can’t.Recruit better, especially freshmen, and especially pitchers. If you know anybody around that has dealt with them on the high school recruiting side of things, they are a mess.Everything about this post is spot on in my opinion.
Its almost like Ming and his "coaches" see something completely different in regards to every one of these topics.
Like its opposite day.
Barnhart needs to consult a few trusted baseball people on the next hire.
