What is Ole Miss Selling?

Man, they are killing it in recruiting. We all know they have been doing this for several years now. Is there a monster brewing down there? They have 7 four stars and a five star and are ranked fourth. They probably will not drop out of top ten if they hang on to all their commitments. Don't get me wrong, I love what CMS is doing, and we are absolutely going to be very good as we continue to build, but Miss. has taken the next step.

I think we can do this as well. Absolutely no reason we cannot take the same path over the next few years and Stoops knows that.

What is Mississippi selling to get a couple of four stars from Tennessee to forgo UT?

They are in the deep south, have a really nice campus, and it's a smaller school. I have always thought they had a really cool/unique situation that they weren't using to its potential.

Don't think they're selling anything, but they seem to be buying... Too much smoke coming from Oxford, but a neutered NCAA is worthless.

Ole Miss should be good as they are very close to Memphis (like an hr) and it is a hot bed for talent. Their is no SEC. Schools in the immediate area so they will be a favorite destination spot if they can beat out Bama which is the next closest.

Yep, they're right in the middle of a football recruiting hot-bed (AL, MS, LA) and now they have results on the field to top it all off..once we see the wins on the field for us in the 8 or 9 range we'll see our recruiting take another step up as well

Ole Miss has enjoyed a long tradition of championship football in the SEC. Their heyday were the Johnny Vault years of championships and a record number of Miss America's on campus. Oxford has enjoyed a restoration from a sleepy small college town to a quaint modern town with a historical past. While the years after Vault retired were a mixed bag for the Rebels, the pride was still there. The major change in the Rebels philosophy was embracing the black athlete.

Today's campus is a long way from the Medgar Evers confrontation of the sixties. Today's campus is diverse and very much into the times. While other sports at Ole Miss languish, football remains King. The old neglected Vault-Hemingway Stadium has undergone major upgrades and amenities to become what our own stadium is about to be in terms of modern comfort, amenities and a sense of pride in our football program.

Hugh Freeze had the facilities, the fan base and tradition to bring back the glory of Ole Miss football.

CMS is doing the same thing at UK. And, better Saturday's are on the horizon.

It doesn't hurt that Tunica is right down the road. Hard to trace poker chips.

So you are saying they are using the same methods Auburn has been using?

UT faces the same issue in western Tn that UGA faces. OM is just a lot closer than UT is.

They also have Lane Kiffins brother on staff who had a show cause yah attached to him for recruiting vilations from another stop.

The big time recruits they have signed were package deals with brothers or friends. The 5 star and brother was hired 2 weeks before the an committed. None of that is illegal and it's doing all you can to sign a kid.

But rumors of payouts are out there too, Tunsil has had a lot of contact with an agent, but all charges in that soap opera have been dropped. But would be interesting to know what step dad told the NCAA in that 3 hour meeting while he was still mad.

Man I hate posts like this. The reason is that we should automatically fall under the same suspicion. How is stoops getting the players he is getting after a 2 win season (Joker), his own 2 win season, and a 5 win season? I sure as heck hope Stoops is doing it the right way, but if you are going to suspect Freeze, then you have to suspect Stoops and Jones from Tennessee as well.

Pushing the envelope in recruiting is standard operating procedure across the south (and in fairness to other Power Five conferences) where athletic department budgets depend on football success.

More like what are they buying? Tunsil is just the beginning. A couple of years ago a coach made an accusation against Ole Miss and Freeze got very defensive saying if anyone knows a violation to come forward. There is a lot of smoke.

Now, Grumpy, are you saying the old ways of recruiting the south are alive and well in Oxford?

Not me, just commenting on the Vol fan's post. I don't know for a fact, but I think UGA filed a complaint with the SEC office about the recruitment on one player, heard Bama did too. But I don't know anything for a fact other than State offered Cam 180k, but he chose to play at AU for free, and dad's church which was scheduled to be condemned got 200k in repairs.

Yeah that's right, although I haven't heard that on Auburn. Easy to get away with it, parents go gambling or cash in while the athletes go through UOV or OV. Pretty slick really.

Hate all you want, Doc. I rarely make posts like this. For example, as much as I dislike Petrino, I don't think he cheats in recruiting. Same for Butch Jones. Same for Saban. But ever since Freeze stepped on OM's campus, there has been a foul wind blowing out of Oxford and the NCAA buzzards have been circling. Where there's smoke, there's fire and right now Oxford looks like a volcano about to erupt.

That's how the insiders on our board say AU gets away with it, but my guess is the Vol board has them too and 98% of the time those so called insiders don't know anymore than me which is nothing. But it would be a slick operation. Tunsil had told all our players and commits he was coming to UGA, but on his official he brought about 20 people and wanted UGA to put them up in a hotel and feed them for the weekend and they refused except for the immediate family and pissed him off and he went to OM. But the 3 bigtime guys they got in that class will be gone after this year, and they are still the only team from the West not to every play for the SEC championship. They are counting on the kid Clemson sent packing for qb, if he can stay out of trouble that is.

A few years back, near our hunting land in middle Georgia some Indian tribe tried to start the process of getting a casino there, bout an hour south of Athens. But apparently no one had any records of that particular tribe ever living in Georgia and the move fell apart.

BTW, UK, under Joker, beat OM in Lexington the year before they hired Freeze and had a top 5 recruiting class.

How many 5 star kids has UK signed out of the blue? UT has signed a few, but some of them have been instate kids, some have been legacy kids. OM signed 3 in one class that had no connection to OM, all from out of state and parents didn't attend.

If there were a list of SEC schools with questionable recruiting practices, AU and OM would be 1A and 1B on that list.

Tenn hit the jackpot the last 2 years with instate and legacy kids and almost all of them are good players. The 2017 instate class will be the best one ever out of Tenn. Its the Nashville area. Not sure what has happened but they pumping out the players.

It's it having some kind of outragous growth? I heard there were lots of people moving into that area some new industry to the area maybe. That's what happened to Atlanta area and why the state and metro area produce so many D1 kids. The drawback to that is that the household is usually an alumni or fan of some out of state program so it basically makes those kids out of state kids.

This year in Georgia is real strong at DL, next year is a strong DB class. But this year has been an unusually down year for LB and RB in the state. Only a couple of top LB prospects and only one really top RB prospect when there is usually at least 2-3 really good ones.

What's Ole Miss selling? Probably free money and cars............but that's just my opinion.

They have players under investigation right now for being in contact with agents. His post wasnt as far off as you make it seem.

As the old saying goes in football recruiting in the South.....

"If you ain't cheatin'.....You ain't tryin' ".......

^^^Spot on.^^^
Back in my high school & college days Coach Vaught had one of the best and at times the best team in SEC. My best friend and teammate was captain of Tulane back in their SEC years. He says Ole Miss was always best team on the schedule, even better than LSU!

Starkville = 92 miles away.

Oxford is 85 mi from Memphis while Starkville is 185 mi. Also Tuscaloosa is only a little over an hour from MSU. That's a lot of competition for area recruits, but I think MSU and Ole Miss both do a good job of capitalizing on the JUCO talent in the State.
