What do you think about an SEC playoff series?

So is this to determine the SEC entry to the NC playoffs or we just call the winner of this playoff national champion? If we aren't participating in the NC playoff looks like we feel entitled. I want to leave no doubt who is NC and would not like no SEC team in it.

This is a silly idea IMO and is nothing more than a way to raise more revenue for the schools. We already have an SEC championship game between the two divisional winners, what more do they think some sort of "playoff" would determine? They should spend their time on the REAL issues.

Will probably be the start of four 16-team super conferences with a final four for the NC. Would also probably mean backing down to an eleven game regular schedule with no more FCS schools.

The article is kind of scant on details which means it's a click bait, but it is interesting that the SEC is considering this.

I took it to mean that the conference might have its own playoffs on top of the NC playoffs and big 6 bowls. Extra money for teams that don't make bowls maybe? Kind of a, intraconference NIT.

Everything has to start small. If this takes off I can for sure see it being an invitational type thing that could be a future national NIT like tourney.

If this NIL isn't gotten under control I am not sure there will be 64 teams to fill 4 super conferences. I think we will be looking at 20-30m to compete with ATM, USC, probably Oregon, Texas. That means over the course of 4 classes, you looking at 80+mil to compete. I think we are looking at a future of 1 super conference of every how many want to spend that amount of money and the rest turn in to a what we now call mid majors. If we get some kind of restrictions I think it can be saved, but like the smart coaches are saying, I don't think we can substain what is happening now. Stars entering the portal auctioning themself off to highest bidder.

I agree. Somebody has too much free time.

I agree this is likely the SEC posturing. Basically saying if you want in then you play by our rules.

I think they are fishing to see if one of the other conferences wants in. If they get interest, it most likely leads to 4 super conferences sending 4 teams each to a 16 team playoff.

If this is for real, I would have to say this is a bluff move by the SEC to force the CFP committee to work things out.
Personally, expansion is needed. 4 teams isn't enough, but 16 is likely too many. IMO eight teams is the right number for now. that gets the real contenders in there and makes room to placate the Cincinnati's and Boise States of the world when one or two of them go undefeated or close. It also makes room for possibly more than two SEC teams as well if a third is deserving.

This all day.

Is this the beginning of the SEC invitational?

This was one of the scenarios I proffered a couple months ago. People didn't seem to like the idea very much. It doesn't help the SEC except in terms of revenue. It's a money-maker for the conference, but solves nothing with regard to the national title. The SEC Championship is already an elimination game in most years, preventing a 2nd SEC program in the "playoff"

If we're going this route, playoff of any kind pre-national title game, let's put the top 2 of the SEC, bigten, acc, big8-12, and pac14 and a few remaining top teams with good resumes and SOS from the all of the conferences to make a seeded playoff from that for the last 2 weeks of the year before the semifinal and title game.
