What a train wreck Rick Barnes has been at Tennessee.

2 years, no NCAA tournament, overall losing record. On top of that there's no hope for the future, 1st recruiting class, 6 3star players, 2017 recruiting class 3 3 stars.

Ben Howland and Bruce Pearl not doing much either. Martin had Tennessee in the sweet sixteen in 2014, all downhill so far with Barnes , I wonder if Barnes will be held to the same standard as Martin?

Yeah those 3 have been disappointing. I do think Pearl will improve as 4/5 starters were frosh and unlike our frosh they will probably be there 4 years.

Plus I think Auburn has a top transfer coming in. I look for them to be a tourney team.

In fairness to Barnes he has had a couple of significant injuries in each of his first two seasons. They had the national champs on the ropes on the road and should have won this past season and he has not lost to Cal and UK in Knoxville since he's been there and that alone will keep the heat off of him. His recruiting has been less than stellar.

We don't do fairness on this board, we trash coaches. He's been garbage!

The players haven't been ranked high but he's found some real diamond in the rough types. UT is going to be better than people think.

Although they are losing a transfer, Kwe Parker. YouTube dunk sensation.

Barnes was a bad hire. In his last 7 years at Texas, he never made it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In his last 4 years, he went 35 - 37 in conference. As an AD, what about that lack of success makes you think he can come in and be successful at 60 years old?

I worked in Knoxville for the last 8 months. My take on the situation is that Mr. Barnes will do just fine because the people in Knoxville don't really care what the basketball team does. It is all about football.

I understand that it's not as big of a priority there and I also understand why the hire was made (some stability after the Pearl situation, short stop by Martin and Tyndall being booted from the NCAA for 10 years), but i also realize that Tennessee fans can absolutely get behind a winner as they did during the Pearl days. Just a very ho-hum hire.

HUH? UT will be decent next year but the ones in this thread that are really perplexing are people bad mouthing Miss ST and Auburn as Auburn will be one of the 15-20 most talented teams the country next season and Miss St should be a tourney team as well. You can't rebuild a program in a day . Both Howland and pearl have done good work so far at the their jobs. Barnes has been OK . Not bad but not good either. UT isn't going to make any sweet 16's but they will be a challenge to beat in the SEC like they were this season as well as they have good young players.

The SEC is were coaches go to serve out their remaining years, except with us.
The schools are hiring good name coaches, but still the fans and players do not see the SEC as a destination for basketball.

Barnes was hired because he's low maintenance. He'll keep them out of trouble and keep them somewhat respectable while they continue to focus on what in the crap Jones is doing with the football program.

Barnes is the most overrated coach of all time. He made ONE final four at Texas and has a good record against Williams, but he can always be counted on to underachieve.

Tennessee was the only team to play all 4 teams that were in the Final 4. Add in Florida and Kentucky they played 6 of the 8 Elite 8 schools. They played a tough schedule.

He also inherited a team that was pretty bad, and then lost several players after year 1 and had to bring in a big freshman/transfer class this season. They had a YOUNG team that played a tough schedule and were a bubble team until the last 2-3 weeks. They will be a dangerous and improved team next year.

11 out of 13 of UT's player were underclassmen this season I just checked. They will be good in the next 2-3 years for sure.

I don't really pay attention but I think the general consensus is with these coaches, the SEC is moving up.

Throw in that Alabama looks to be taking basketball seriously , it looks like Mizzou and maybe Miss St are the only ones that really need a little building up.

I think Auburn went 3-0 against the Big 12 last year (I heard that somewhere) and like it was mentioned here, UT had UNC in panic mode until the very end.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about the SEC. I'd like to see Barnes, Howland and Pearl stick around for a few years.

The SEC next year will be the best it has been since , well who can even remember. Lunardi had 6 getting in in his way to early bracketology but I actually think it will be 7 . UK ,UF , USC , Bama,Vandy , Auburn , A&M with Miss St just missing it .

Barnes was a smart hire, but only because it was a safe hire. Tennessee had two coaches who were fired due to NCAA infractions and they were basically a dumpster fire waiting to get out of control. Martin inherited a whole lot of talent at UT, a lot of 4 star guys and a he brought in Stokes halfway through the first year to give them a 5 star freshman. I think his problem was that he focused so much energy on defense that his teams often struggled offensively. He got them to really come together in his third season in large part thanks to Josh Richardson finally becoming an offensive juggernaut. Still, I think that he was not going to be a coach that regularly made runs in the NCAA tournament. Barnes is, IMO, a coach that can be similar to Martin. He will recruit okay and will not leave them with any black marks. UT needs to clear the bad taste out of their mouths and just put out some decent basketball teams that don't get caught up in controversy.
