Westry

Well that is shocking. I thought it would take a few games to take a spot but hell.

He must be killing it in practice. All reports say our WRs are big time improved too so Westry must be looking real solid.

Best news of camp so far. I'm sure he'll have some growing pains but to beat out a senior IN PRE-SEASON CAMP is impressive and means we're on the come up!

Appreciate everything Tiller has done during his career, but the dropped INT and missed tackles every single game last year gave me all of him I could handle. It seems like EVERY TIME a receiver was wide open they had a #3 UK jersey chasing behind them.

Goodness. This kid must be the real deal. I'm excited to see how he performs this year.

I take no joy in one of our Senior CBs being beaten out by a Freshman but the dude must be something special to have done so. The truth is the Cats CBs have been a weakness the past several years. Hope it is a big improvement.

Tiller has three weeks to keep this battle moving. Quinn has a fight on his hands too. Gonna need them all.

Best players will play. Stoops knows CBs so if he is starting, he must be for real

I think all of Stoops' comments are telling if you haven't read the transcript. He says Westry is running with the 1's because he had a good scrimmage Saturday, and this doesn't mean he'll start Week One. Stoops goes on to say that he wants a boundary who can match up with the 6'3'' WRs.

Westry will always have a higher ceiling than Tiller, but can he match the senior's technique and also his run-support abilities? Remember, boundary corners have to tackle well or they become a big liability on the short-side (not as many defenders) of the field.

That's impressive. Sounds like Stoops found exactly what he was looking for in a CB.

My memory is not what it used to be, but wasn't Westry a last minute addition where we basically traded players with Auburn?

hate to pick on a kid, but I join in those hoping a youngster next beats out Quinn on the other side. Actually Quinn would probably be great as a slot corner rather than trying to cover #1's on the outside.

Thought so, sounds like we got the better deal if he's already showing out in the first week of practice.

This means he is demonstrating he has some talent and ability. This doesn't mean he has been named a starter, it just means that today he moved up with the 1s. guys move up and down daily in fall practices.

This is not shocking at all Tiller was horrible last year and equally bad was McWilson.

I don't really hate seeing freshmen taking a seniors spot on the field. It can only mean this kid is the real deal and it also means we might improve somewhere on the field. Yeah, it sucks for the guy he beat out, but if you want to win, you go with the more talented player. This is especially true when you're coaching in the sec and play teams that have way more talent all over the field. It might actually mean we are starting to get that type of talent. To beat out a guy who has been here for so long means this kid has to be a badass.

I think this talk of him taking Tiller's spot is premature. I think Stoops sees his potential and skill set (as well as his physical gifts) and wants him running with the ones to let him develop and to see his current strengths and weaknesses. But, that does not guarantee he starts.

What I like is all of a sudden our CB depth is great.

Sad truth is that he doesn't have to be great to move up and take over. Maybe he is the real deal but moving up was not all that unexpected.

False. The senior corners have made their share of mistakes, but they've been starting corners against some incredibly talented receivers, and many times, they've held their own. To come in and take over as a true freshman is a big statement, and you're grossly underselling the value of experience.

As a true freshman, it's still impressive to beat out a senior with two years of starting experience, if he does end doing that.

Also, not only would he be beating Tiller, he's would also be beating every other CB on the roster (otherwise, one of the other CBs would be starting instead of him), excluding Quinn, and all but three are ahead of him in terms of longevity.
