Every year we are ranked Top 5 preaseason, and every year the writers vote that way when they haven't seen most of our players. Nothing more than a guess, in other words, and based only on respect for what Cal does every year.
The problem is if they are wrong, no one ever follows up and says "yeah, turns out this particular freshman crop isn't stellar, we shouldn't have rated Kentucky that high." Nope. But what you will see is something like what Parrish tweeted last week, about Cal being top 5 preseason x number of years but only made final four y number of years. If UNC had underachieved this year relative to a preseason ranking, or if Louisville does next year relative to its preseason ranking, then you can honestly say "the ranking was legit based on what you had, out simply underachieved." We're never in that boat.

Unfortunately, unless we get a surprise returnee or two, don't really see us as a national title contender next season. Even with Bamba. I could be wrong, I just haven't been overly impressed with this incoming class.

You guys crack me up. Get your hopes up all you want, but next year will be a struggle. We don't have a single shooter on an over the top young team. Pinning your hopes on Briscoe is laughable at best. I bleed blue through and through, but one would have to completely stick their head in the sand to think next year's team is a top team coming in.

I don't think we should be #1 entering the season, but whether or not we're a contender for #9 by the end of the season depends on whether or not Bamba picks Kentucky, and whether one of our wing forwards is capable of being a consistent force for us. I'm not getting my hopes up for Briscoe or Bam to return, though.
What we'll lack in consistent outside shooting (though I think Diallo is being undersold a bit in that regard), I predict we'll make up for by being a dominant defensive team thanks to the size and length of most of our starting lineup.
