We need Dalton Knecht

With Cal refusing to run zone, I’m afraid he will be a huge defensive liability. That being said I’d still like to have him as a team can always use scorers.
Ever notice that about half of Cal's problems would disappear if he'd simply adapt with things like a zone for 25% of the game?

He creates his own limitations with his narrow coaching philosophy. At least guys like Calhoun and Coach K were constantly adapting.

It really is surprising. He’s a weird blend of things because his ego is too big to allow him to change, but people with big egos also don’t like to fail. His unwillingness to adapt has been his downfall.

I do not disagree that we need to empoy some zone defense, we definitely do, but what teams (besides Syracuse) play zone defense for 25% of the game ?? When I watch games, I see very little zone defense.

I like his game but I don't know if he would be a good fit for Cal's system.

I said the same thing in the other thred. He will be asked to switch on to small guards in Cal’s system. It wouldn’t matter how many points scored because in Cal’s defense he would constantly be getting beat by being switched on to little guards. Cal’s adjustment would be taking him out of the game instead of changing his defense in order to keep a scorer on the floor. The shot blocking should be better this year so that would be the only saving grace.

I think it just depends on your personnel on the floor. Most of these guys are athletic enough to play decent man to man. But some just aren’t. That doesn’t mean they can’t be an asset, you just have to make adjustments when they’re in the game.

Coach K used a zone quite often.
Scott Drew uses one often.
John Beilein used to use one all the time.
Pitino used one frequently.
Self used a triangle and two on his 2008 title run.
Majerus knocked out Arizona and UNC in 1998 on their Final Four run.

25% might be extreme, but plenty of elite coaches use a zone, even on title runs.

Curious as to what you might know specifically about his defensive ability? Would love to know more if you could fill me in.

With the thirty-second clock: Allow 8 seconds to bring it up and subtract 4 rush-seconds on the end, so you really only need to play quality defense for about eighteen (18) seconds. I definitely think you should play some zone to mix it up and show a different look, but if your athletes cannot play tough man-to-man for 18 seconds ... you are lacking talent and probably are not that good to begin with.

Cal might offer him if he wears face paint. We have to fool Cal nowadays, he’s too stubborn.

Reminds of the Baylor Scheirman situation. He probably would want a bigger role than Cal will give him. I'd be shocked if he comes to UK.

Reeves can't guard a post, yet every one wants him back, the same with Grady the year before
so why is this kid any different if he can add consistent scoring
get all of the scorers possible
scoring is the name of the game now days

Well as kelzer pointed out in another thread, his defensive box +/- was -1.1 in a very weak conference.

For reference since someone else brought Reeves up as a poor defender, Reeves finished the season -.1 and obviously against much stronger competition.

We don't know this kid. We don't need him. People say I would like for so and so to come. But this is Kentucky. We need skilled players and shot blockers. Players that are stars. UK will never ever need role players.

I'm confused about this
Yeah because not only won't the kid defend well. He won't be able to score on power 5 teams. He's saying or banking on him scoring, we can't even beat power 5 teams in the tournament now. You wanna bring in someone to disappoint us because lack of skills?

Losers... Nobody plays zone

Agree. Putting the ball through the hole is the name of game. Everything else is supportive and secondary.

Kid looks like an absolute baller. He’s a three level scorer and Calipari needs to go all in on this kid.
Cal to you...
