We can debate all day and night about the other players on the roster and what they will be. However, as long as Tyler Ulis stays healthy, I'm never going to believe that Kentucky can't win a game. It's that simple. Calipari basically gave the reigns to this kid over the summer and built a roster around him. He said it within minutes of last night's interview, "Tyler is the MVP of the team...he will make many of the other guys look much better" He later alluded to the fact that "when you have guards, you always have a chance", when asked about how they will approach a game without the size and skill inside.

If we have Skal and eventually a healthy Poythress to go along with Lee, Humphries and Willis our Frontcourt will be damn formidable.

You dont get to be preseason #1 with just a bunch of guards.

Some thoughts a month out:

1. This team has back court scorers. But if that was decisive Indiana would be a contender. Kentucky also has good passers and 'presence' in Ulis and Murray, two guys who are just intuitive basketball ninjas.

2. This team may never be a defensive juggernaut. Cal's best teams win with defense. This team has challenges to be a top defensive unit, and I think Cal knows it -- hence the heretical talk of playing zone. Ulis can do lots on defense, but he can't stop his man from shooting and passing over him or taking him into the lane. Skal so far doesn't seem to have the defensive instincts of Nerlens, nevermind AD. Murray is tough but lacks lateral quickness on defense. Poythress isn't himself and may not be.

3. It is best to recalibrate expectations subtracting a beast-mode Poythress. EVen if he gets to 100 percent physically, I worry that he'll have the mental toughness to vanquish his doubts and fears. Lee looked better offensively last night. But his defense, and Matthews', may be critical.

4. It's going to take a lot of patience with this team. It'll show flashes of offensive brilliance from the start, but we'll look up and Albany or some other mid major will have scored 78 points and be hanging around with four minutes to go.

5. For me it is too soon to say this is a Final Four team. I have hopes. And I could make the case, easily. But I think Cal was absolutely right that at season's open teams like UNC, Kansas and Maryland and maybe a few more will be playing better.
Sounds about right 55. However, UK appears to have the potential to just flat out score their opponents.
Yes D is important but the name of the game is putting the basketball in the hoop.
The Cats will do just that with regularity.

Agree with everything except the bold - besides Jamal "torched all the international qualifying teams" Murray, I haven't seen a guard get into the lane on Ulis with even a modicum of success.

Cal will have this team playing pretty good defense by the time we are in the heart of the SEC. The one thing you can bank on is that Cal's team will play good defense.

Ulis and his teammates need to stay healthy.

We don't have any beefy bigs on our team, but I like our frontcourt. It's not like with the talent we have there its going to be a weakness. Skal is a lil rusty from not playing much the last few years, but the talent is there to be one of the best in the nation. We are a team with elite guards. Our bigs fit a team built on elite guards. They just need to rebound and run the floor and our bigs will excel at that type of game.

Would you say that: So. Ulis, Fr. Murray, Fr. Briscoe, Fr. Matthews and Jr. Mulder have the potential to be better than the So.Twins, Fr. Ulis and Fr. Booker?

Ulis is incredible. His ball control is seemless and he seems to navigate through traffic like he's on rails. if he shoots anywhere near like he shot it last night, or last year he will be impossible to guard.

If you are evaluating POY's play last night from a less then exhibition game then I question your concern. They all looked like a backyard BB team last night. Cal will get this out of them in time and they will become a final 4 team again in March.

I hope you are right KWilt, but I disagree. I repeat what I said about Indiana: They were undeniably gifted offensively last year, and with Ferrell-Blackmon-Williams may have three better scorers than Kentucky. They were a fringe tournament team last year and maybe a Sweet 16 team this year. That's how far offensive talent alone can get you.

UNC may have a better offensive team than UK this year, and I could make the case for others.

What has gotten four Cal teams out of the last five to the Final Four has been defense. I MAY be under-selling this team's defensive potential. I could make the case for Matthews and Lee and Ulis and maybe a couple others as potentially elite defenders. But seeing Poythress laboring last night has made me reassess this team's defensive potential.
our half court offense in a tourney (slow down) setting should actually be better or at least as good as unc's. we weren't better offensively than them in '11 but in a half court game we were. unc can hang with us because they like playing fast, as does cal and UK historically. and i mean at pushing the ball without a clear advantage and still scoring. and we can hang with them because our half court d is almost always better. but in a playoff i'll take the better defense and the quicker guards.

i agree/disagree with both of you. this team is capable of scoring in 70's imo even in a grinder. when the competition is good cal usually wins in the 60's. so rather in such a game where we only give up 58-62 i think we may give up more, compared to last year at least (obviously). but i think rather than getting 68-70 we could get 75. which is a lot for a good defensive college team. i'm not selling us short defensively either. ulis, briscoe, matthews, poythress, lee, skal is quite a list of defenders. we should be near the top in all the categories again.

ulis is such a floor general he's only showing glimpses of his real offensive capability. he only takes good shots as our leader and pg, and there will be times where he may force the issue to keep the d honest, or if we're in a slide. but he can score off the dribble a lot more than some think. murray too already has a full arsenal of floating shots. so dangerous.

I'd love to have an elite offense and not have to rely as much on defense. I still want a good defense, but I'd like to see us just destroy teams with our scoring ability. I would like to be similar to the 96 team. I believe they averaged 91a game but still held opponents to under 70 a game.
