We have 3 true point guards. We have 2 bigs that are not true post players. That's the hand we are dealt this year. I think it can work but will take some time.

Our system does not use a 1,2,3,4,5
Never has. Hell, go to the 2012 National Title game against Kansas and watch the starting lineups. They announce 2 guards and 3 forwards. If you want to label numbers, Ulis is clearly the 1, Briscoe is the 2, Murray is the 3, Poythress is the 4 and Skal is the 5. In Cals system, is swing the ball, get a mismatch and drive, look to score, lob or kickout. It also doesn't matter who starts under Cal, because we play a lot of people a lot of minutes. The 3 guard lineup works well, because Briscoe is stronger than any 2 guarding him or him guarding them, while Murray is faster than any 3 he's matched up with. There will be some games that Ulis cant play in. As crazy as it sounds, a big guy game that gets really physical....There were 2 games last year where Cal said afterwards that "Tyler couldn't play in this game" There is also going to be games where Skal cant play much. But I expect Humphries and Winyard to get a lot of his minutes until he clicks. Its not effort with Skal, its bad prior coaching and the fact that he sat out last year. He is just behind and will be fine. This is why I prefer guys from Chicago, New York, New Jersey, the bigger better basketball schools/schedules. Hell even Indiana and North Carolina to some extent. Im just not crazy about recruits from Tennessee, Texas, etc. They have bad habits from bad coaching. The twins couldn't defend that well and complained a lot early on, while Julius would spin, hold the ball low and get stripped, or stop the ball movement. While if you look at Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Indiana programs....Anthony Davos, Antoine Walker, Nazi Mohamed, MKG, Marquis Teague, Doron Lamb. All guys from big cities, big programs or scheduling, all were fundamentally sound and won titles. Skal, was from Haiti, played in Tennessee, switched schools multiple times, then had to sit out his senior year. He is going to be really good, But not good until late this year, and not really good until 3 to 5 years. I think we need to play Humphries a lot more.

I agree a position is just a number on the floor. What I'm saying is it takes time to adjust. Briscoe and Murray are point guards who are used to having the ball in their hands and controlling the team. Did you watch Murray for Team Canada last year. He brought the ball up the court and was unstoppable at the top of the key. Now he is stuck on the wing the majority of the game. Lee and Skal aren't true post players. They may have been in high school but they don't have the strength to hold their position on the block.

OP has a very good point. Briscoe and Murray, sadly to say, would be scoring a LOT more at St. John's and Oregon. Thank God they didn't go to those schools, but they would have been the man had they chosen to do so and would be playing the position they're used to playing.

Very good post except about the hole ULIS thing . Ulis is a top 3 pg in college and has to play almost every minute of the game for us to be a great team.

Interesting discussion here,to have our best 5 on the court we have to have Ulis,Murray and Briscoe in the line up with some combination of Lee,Skal and Alex being tho other 2.I think the problem currently is who does Skal guard,he can't guard a 3 and can't hold position well enough to guard a 4 or 5.It appears we may be playing people out of position but I think it is more about what cretain players can or can't do If Humphries wasn't such a liability trying to guard smaller quick people or Matthews had a bit more offensive game we would have a little more flexibility

Its hard to say. Just guessing based on Cals comments from a couple games last year. I agree with the one poster above about Murray. That kid was absolutely unstoppable at the point, for Canada. And I think we will see more of that, in big games. He is a pro. But he needs does better with the ball, one on one

Murray at the top of the key with ball in his hands a lot more would make this team dangerous. ... I love Ulis but Jamal absolutely abused point Gaurds in the pan ams....

Oregon has a loaded backcourt, I doubt Murray would be scoring or playing more there than he is here. Briscoe would be the man for St. John's, sure.
