Watch UK signee Wenyen Gabriel’s season opener at 6:30 pm

I can't watch tonight but a reminder for locals Gabriel and Thon Maker will be facing each other Dec. 12 in Lexington at Dunbar High.

I think both Wenyen and SKJ will move up in the rankings as the year progresses - I would not be surprised if all 5 of our recruits (not counting Wynyard) are in the top 15-17 by year end. Amazing!

"WMA falls to Canarias, 59-56 | Future Wildcat Wenyen Gabriel (@WenyenGabriel) finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds."

Gabriel scored 21 pts/11 rbs, but his team lost. Wenyen was extremely impressive though - think he'll end up being consensus Top 10. He is going to be an absolute monster in Cal's defense.

SKJ is the guy I'd like to see blow up - he's the only one of our guys who is borderline as a McDAA. Can you imagine if we had 5 guys in the McDAA game? Could have a UK vs. Duke McDonalds game if Bolden ends up going there.

I look forward to another photo like this in April when I attend the Mickey D game again. I think SKJ will make the game. The prestige of playing for UK will put him over the top if he's on the borderline.

Side note:

Do you guys think the Jordan Brand game has surpassed the Mickey D game due to including the reclassified guys? I mean, the Mickey D game left off Noel, Wall, Skal, and others due to their late reclassifications. The Jordan Brand game featured most of them.

I think McDAA game is still better. Jordan Brand is a little too skewed to the Nike kids.

Beautiful assist man. I'm thinking you've lobbed that to Wenyen a few times before in practice.

He seems to run the floor with ease..who does Wenyon remind you of?

Lol thank you! actually, I haven't been able to throw him many good oops in practice but I guess it finally worked out. more of a credit to him then me as he is crazy athletic. He really does, I know some people think he's a post but I think of him as a guard. he rarely posts up and instead kills people in transition and off the dribble. that being, there's not many 6-10 guys who do that besides Kevin durant

You looking forward to playing in Lex?

Yes, it's gonna be sweet! I think we are catching a game too.
Cats play Arizona State on December 12th in Rupp at 3:15. Sure hope you have a great time in Lex.

I'll be at Dunbar to cheer you guys on. Do you know what time your game is?

oh okay that must be the game then. but no I have no clue. I think at night though

I seen he is rated 10 by rivals. I see they have their $#!+ together when it comes to rankings.

Hey KUbballfan. Does Gabriel work on any low post moves stuff or is it basically wing skills in practice? I just think if he added some baby hook shots and stuff to his skill set, he'd be completely unstoppable from all spots on the court.

fox and monk are going to be studs...but this is the one recruit that intrigues me the most. cal hasnt had a player like him. davis was 6'10", long and athletic, had guard skills, but was still a PF. this kid is a true wing player. dont know if he can guard a wing player but i dont really care. if he can add some strength...might just be a top 5 player in this class. so much skill, versatility, and a complete mismatch because of his size/length.

I agree that his ceiling is way, way up there, but I'm not so sure he's any more of a natural wing than AD was. If you remember AD's senior year on that middle school equivalent HS team he played for, he was doing a lot of face-up stuff, and taking a lot of jump shots.

I do think Gabriel is a lot more of a natural small forward than Lyles ever was.

To me, a "natural wing" is a guy who has some size but is still a threat to beat his guy off the dribble from 20 feet out, and to hit some catch-and-shoot jumpers. Gabriel shows flashes of some of that, but right now I see his strength as being his superb athleticism for a guy with an enormous wingspan. Like AD and Nerlens Noel, he has incredibly quick feet, and gets off the floor as fast as anyone.

If Gabriel does combine that with dribble moves and a reliable jumper, you'll start to hear Kevin Durant comparisons. And they won't be completely unjustified, because the size and athleticism is already similar.

but everyone raves about his shot...

From what I've seen of Gabriel, he's not going to blister someone from the outside ... at least not yet. hIs form looks great so I think he could become a good shooter with time.

He has form, but does he have touch?(And form without touch is is exactly how I'd describe Trey Lyles. Most of what Lyles did on his shot looked right, and yet he just couldn't seem to get the ball in the basket from more than 15 feet out).

I'm skeptical, because he hit a grand total of 7 3's in 43 attempts during (recorded) AAU ball this past spring/summer.

I'm ecstatic to have the kid, and I think he's a monster talent. I'm just not sure he's really a small forward.
